Following a foundational healing of malaria while serving in the US Peace Corps, Philippines, I returned to the US to earn my law degree from Washington University School of Law. The majority of my law and business career was with AT&T. Some AT&T positions involved international responsibilities, including President of the Asia/Pacific region, based in Hong Kong. All of these experiences confirmed for me the universality of divine Love. After my corporate career, I entered into the full-time practice of Christian Science.

Saying “yes” to God makes life a grand adventure.  Learning about my relationship with God benefitted every area of my life, from health to relationships to employment and supply. During college, I wasn’t sure what career path to follow.

Robert Coe Gilbert CSB

Although a life-long Christian Scientist, I didn’t embrace it fully until I had to deal with a number of challenges in college. After graduation, I was accepted into The Mother Church chaplain training program, attended seminary, and had a variety of assignments in the Army, including military prisons, hospitals, and a tour of duty in Vietnam. The public practice of healing naturally evolved and I became listed in the Journal in 1976. After completing active duty, my wife and I moved to California, where we raised two sons.

Traditional animism, worship of and belief in many spirits, nurtured my heathen early education.

As a child and young adult growing up in St. Louis, I felt life was a mystery; the future was unknown and the present a string of random events.

In high school I struggled with a painful disease that examining physicians said had no cure. Through Christian Science I was healed within two weeks.

As a little girl I learned that God is Love. During my occasional sleepless nights, my mom would encourage me to "catch some angels." In the Christian Science Sunday school I had learned Mary Baker Eddy's definition of angels: "God's thoughts passing to man;...the inspiration of goodness...counteracting all evil" ( Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.

Because my mother was such a faithful church-goer, I received my first Bible at the age of three for perfect attendance in a protestant church Sunday School. That record continued until high school when I went to work for a hospital on weekends.

To get to the bottom of events, to know how something really is: that has motivated me since my childhood, to ask questions. Quite early, I found answers in music, while playing the piano and composing; tones, sounds, and rhythms opened great, wonderful spaces.
