Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work for the Christian Science Journal, Sentinel, Herald, and JSH-Online?
If you have solid editing and writing skills, an aptitude for social media, and want to learn more about the editorial and publishing process of the Christian Science periodicals, then consider an internship with our department.
We’re looking for someone interested in learning about what happens behind the scenes in editing and publishing the content of the periodicals. You will learn firsthand about both print and digital forms of publishing, and part of your time will be spent collaborating with authors on their testimonies and articles. You will also spend time every week contributing to the Sentinel’s Bible Lens: using research materials, writing, choosing an accompanying article for each Lens, and archiving content.
Through the digital archive on JSH-Online, you will also be exposed to the rich history of Christian Science publishing. There will be an opportunity to engage with the Journal/Sentinel/Herald team on social media writing, posting, and strategy. In addition to writing and editing skills and a strong interest in marketing and communication, the ideal candidate would be an enthusiastic and proficient user of Facebook and either Twitter or Instagram, and would be dedicated to accuracy and integrity.
Opportunities:
Learning the ins and outs of writing and editing for the magazines—from pieces for kids and teens to testimonies of healing
Writing a few of your own articles for the Journal and Sentinel
Learning the research, production, and archiving activities of the Bible Lens -- including the writing, editing, and layout of an entire Lens, as well as choice of cover and back page material
Learning about publishing the Christian Science periodicals by participating in the JSH Product and Promotion scrum team.
Creating and publishing social media posts for JSH-Online
Selecting images and writing marketing copy for JSH-Online
Learning the ins and outs of the website
Helping to curate featured content on the site
Learning Salesforce and sending letters to authors
Gaining a clearer understanding of the role of the periodicals within the Christian Science movement
Qualifications & Desired Qualities:
Committed to Christian Science and interested in sharing its healing message through the periodicals
Working on a degree in English, Journalism, Marketing, or Mass Communications, or similar experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Highly proficient with and active on social media as mentioned above, and a confident user/learner of other technology
Organized, detail-oriented, and efficient
Willingness to participate in an energetic department
Team player who is also happy to accomplish tasks independently
Ingenuity and critical thinking are highly valued
