This letter was submitted in response to a Times commentary on “manifesting” that erroneously associates Christian Science with New Thought and the New Age practice of manifesting.

Like people of many faiths, Christian Scientists take the Golden Rule as basic ethics. It guides our relations with society, and while we can’t claim to have been always perfect in this regard, we feel strongly about respecting the rights of our neighbors and fellow citizens, and not imposing our own religious choices on others. Love for family, neighbor, community and the world is at the core of our values just as in most other churches.

I have always loved Christian Science and couldn’t wait for my twelfth birthday so I could join The Mother Church. I knew I wanted to be a practitioner by the age of fifteen.

Growing up in a Christian family, I had lots of questions. I thought deeply about God and existence.

After graduating from college and law school, I joined the United States Justice Department as a trial lawyer in the Antitrust Division and then as a special Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuting criminal cases from indictment to jury trial to sentencing. From the beginning of my legal career, whenever I went on my own ambition and talents, I would falter.

I found Christian Science in college and immediately knew I had found the Truth. The first thing I did was read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and I was amazed to find articulated what I’d always felt must be true.

Phillip is accepting lecture invitations from branches only in the United Kingdom during the 2024-2025 lecture year. Although humble beginnings and hard knocks taught Phillip the value of being honest and hardworking, for oneself and others, that lesson did not last long into adult life.
