Joseph's life was a great example that divine Science (the knowledge of God) will never leave you where it found you... but it will always elevate you, taking you above and beyond material beliefs and closer to God.
The story of Joseph, the son of Jacob, begins in the 37th chapter of Genesis.

Thank you so much, John, for pointing out the uselessness of battling resentment of injustice. How easy to think our problems are another's fault - thus giving our disappointments a reason to exist. Joseph's example is so profound.

Thanks John! Joseph has been an inspiration for me my entire life. He never gave up or indulged in self-pity. He was always the best he could be in any situation, even in prison! Every time I'm tempted to feel sorry for myself over some situation, I remember Joseph and how he endured difficulties much worse than mine, and how he triumphed in the end!

Thank you for this encouraging start to the day; we are indeed blessed, and there is no discouragement that can thwart our way when we keep our thought one with Truth: even the cherishing of our inseparable oneness with God, our loving Creator. Thank you again, John, for the inspiration of your words; in the remembrance of things past, we take courage for our next step.

In any situation where I am tempted to feel self-pity, my life saver is to trust the statement in Science and Health, "Each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love." I turn from the mortal picture and look with expectancy for the new views, and through God's great love I have found them.
Thank you, John, for another of the great lifts you have given us.

This morning received an important letter in a language I didn't
Understand. This followed 2 long letters with forms to fill in in the
same foreign language. They have been worrying me for days and
I couldn't quite see how God could possibly help me but felt sure in
My heart He would. I phoned this morning in reply to letter as soon
As it was received, and spoke to a very kind Person whe spoke
English and was told I didn't have to fill in the Forms after all and
Everything would remain as normal. Then I listened to the Daily
LiftIIII Both today's and yesterday's Lifts met my need more than
I can say and I am so grateful for all the wonderful help I receive
every single day since I heard of Christian Science and realised
This is the Truth. Betty

The Lifters and for all the helpful letters which keep coming in
Throughout the day.

Many thanks John for this reminder of the life of Joseph, where good triumphs over evil. What a good lift. I've now listened to it twice. Thanks. It made me think of Mary Baker Eddy's words from page 93 of her autobiographical book Retrospection and Introspection:
The ideal of God is no longer impersonated as a waif or
wanderer; and Truth is not fragmentary, disconnected, un-
systematic, but concentrated and immovably fixed in Princi-
ple. The best spiritual type of Christly method for uplifting
human thought and imparting divine Truth, is stationary
power, stillness, and strength; and when this spiritual ideal
is made our own, it becomes the model for human action.

I've always loved the lessons we learn from Joseph. One thing is that 'Nothing happens by chance but is an opportunity to grow deeper in our spiritual understanding of God.' Even in times when it seems darkest in our lives, it's but a dream that awaking to that deeper understanding we see God lifting us to what is truly real. Joseph teaches us to be patient, loving, forgiving, unselfish, strong and more, always trusting God to lead the way. I'm truly grateful for the inspiration from this lift and story about Joseph. Thank you John,
This is absolutely beautiful and so on point. Yesterday I spoke at length with a friend about similar ideas but to hear you put it into perspective concerning Joseph has given me some additional substance and context to share with the friend.
This Week's Bible Lesson on Substance means a lot to me. The Golden Text says it all "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God" (Rom 11:33) - there is no mention of money there.
Sometime ago I had to start my career all over again where the earnings were less that what I was accustomed. It seemed as if I had been displaced and all that was rightfully mine, that I worked for was being taken away. Bit by bit (precept upon precept - Isa 28:10) I grew to understand that:-
(a) God is my divine Source. My supply may come through channels (salary, investments, gifts, etc) but these channels are fed by the divine Source which can never dry up.
(b) Joy is spiritual (S&H 265:29); Happiness is spiritual born of Truth and Love (S&H 57:19). No matter what one may do, they can never take away joy or happiness whose source is God.
(c) God does not send sorrow but blessings (Prov 8: 22) and we must not allow our vision of Truth to be impaired by fear or worry.
(d) We understand more of our true individuality when we learn; we learn when we explore, experience, listen be patient and obey
(e) God lovingly governs, protects & guides; His will IS done
We MUST press on & love! Thnx

Joseph knew what his brothers did not, namely that crops grow without rain and without anyone to till the soil. He was able to save them, because he was blessed with this understanding of God. (See Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 520-521.) Also, most Christian Scientists who are familiar with the reading room know the article by Louise Knight Wheatley Cook, about Joseph, called "The Truth about Adversity" first appearing in the February 1, 1941 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel." She ends her first paragraph, "No matter how acute the condition became, he evidently made no complaint. No matter how hopeless the situation might seem, his courage did not fail. He simply trusted God, and did the best that he could." JSH-Online also has the article, if you feel like reading about Joseph's journey in this light.
Thank you for this lift and reminding me about Joseph.Yesterday I watched 60 horses in Barrel Racing Competition and the 5-Pole Racing Competition. A few horses are not there yet, as far as training goes, and only one "Junior" class competitor, Lacey, fell, her horse panicked and had to be wrangled back, with some difficulty. She was up and riding on her horse later. A good example of equestrian athletes not giving up. All the horses have individual names, too.

The great lesson that joy is not at the mercy of opinion is so important.
I got to watch this lesson be considered by riding students through my teaching and training career. While everyone enjoys a “first place” win, the fact is that the opinion of any judge is a surface view and may have little to do with the real story of success of a horse and rider team working together on that day. Great performances may go unrecognized by those viewing the surface, but this does not mean that they are not great performances to be celebrated.
Joseph retained his closeness to God, even when others might view him outwardly as a threat or frame him as dishonest. He seems to have dismissed self pity regarding his plight and the actions of his family – allowing God to unite his understanding to harmony! That is more than team work. It is like performing as one. Hymn 135 "I know no life divided,O Lord of life, from Thee;---I richly shall inherit
All good, from Thee alone."
Thanks, coach John.

Joseph has always been an inspiration to me of patience, hope and tenacity. I have often thought in dire circumstances "what would Joseph do?" He wouldn't give up or mire in the problem, he would go forward with great expectations. There is an article, "THE DESTRUCTION OF BABYLON" by Mark McCurties (Journal, July 2012) that is excellent on this subject. It states "God's design for us is never that we should be stuck in a state of sin and suffering. No matter how unpleasant things seem to get in our experience, the natural satus of God's man is freedom from a mortal life." I am deeply grateful for all of the avenues we have for inspiration and guidance; the weekly Bible lessons, the periodicals, and these Daily Lifts.

Thank you so much John. Lindy Chamberlain was on tv today, telling of the time her baby, left for a short while in a tent at Uluru, was taken by a dingo, a wild dog. In the following months Lindy was accused of murdering her baby, and was tried and convicted of murder, and imprisoned for life. She had given birth to their last child while in prison, and could only nurse her baby for one hour. Fortunately a solicitor in England reviewed her case and ordered a retrial, when the verdict was overturned and she was released.
Lindy is a Seventh Day Adventist, and was confronted with hate such as Australia had not known since convict days.
She spoke of her love for God, and the many times she was comforted by passages from the Bible, chosen at random. On the night before the trial she was overwhelmed with anguish and prayed "I can't do this by myself. You will have to do it for me." And a feeling of such compassion and love enveloped and embraced her, she was able to sleep. We would say the presence of the Christ comforted her.
Every one, men and women, gain comfort and strength from the story of Joseph and are able to move forward in the right direction as a result of following in his footsteps, understanding their inseparability from God, no matter what the circumstances.
Thank you Nate and the team; the BoL and lecturers; and the steadfast Lifters.

Thanks, John, for that clear idea of looking up and seeing the true spiritual picture, no matter what the human circumstances seem to be. How often we all need to learn that lesson! I've just seen the musical "Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat" twice this August at the Chemainus Theatre. Wikipedia reports the play has a long history as a stage play beginning in England in l968, developing into a successful Broadway play in New York in l982, and becoming a popular play for high schools and theatres everywhere. The Chemainus Theatre performances have been excellent and the play has been held over into September.
I found that Joseph's example was faithfully reproduced from the Bible account, and the lessons plain for everyone, told with underlying joy, harmony and humour. I was touched by the children acting as angels with candles giving light and singing songs of comfort to Joseph in the darkened dungeon. Pharoahs' performance was delightful, putting a big grin on nearly every face in the audience.
The Chemainus artistic director Mark Dumez states in his message, "I'm glad Joseph dreamed, and when faced with the grim reality of sibling rivalry gone horribly wrong, chose a path to peace - so that his dream and his family's story might continue to call to us today."
Thank you John Adams for bringing the story of Joseph to us today. It is such a well known and loved Bible story with the lesson of the value of forgiveness, exchanging revenge for love, keeping the idea of God's purpose in mind.

Thank you, John and writers. Perfect timing for me. It doesn't matter what lies others believe or spread about you, what they think or feel or do to you, or what is your circumstances or location. If they value or devalue you, favor or abuse you. It doesn't matter what ups and downs are claimed by the material picture, body, social status, politics/economics, job or slavery/imprisonment, family/friends, home or foreign strangeness, loneliness or crowd, lust or hunger, threats or violence, injustice, wealth/poverty, powerlessness or power, past memories, future prophesies, weather or famine, expected wars, whatever. Nightmare or dream-come-true. Not what they are or you are, but what God is. What matters is how you trust and obey God, love and serve God, and bless others. It is not whether others do what we want, but that we do God's will and fulfill His divine purpose blessing all.
Sometimes they come around to the facts and truth, and to being honest, responsible, humane, as my family is after over half a century. Sometimes they don't. But the point is what God is being and doing and willing and gracing. Spiritual sense, not material/personal/temporal senselessness. Much needed and treasured, Everyone! Thanks.
Love it!

So inspiring and practical. John, this is spot on.
One time I felt very betrayed, yet not disappointed. It simply manifested itself as a wonderful opportunity to love more and it pointed out needed correction. Thank you, John Q. for a wake-up call I need to remember. I never compared my let downs with Joseph's. I'm ashamed. Nothing I've faced matches all he went through. You've brought to light, not to stay disturbed over problems, but look at the horizon, remember his outcome. God used Joseph to bring priceless blessings to those who wronged him, and to all his people, and to Egypt where he'd been a slave and prisoner. With drought now so widespread, and price increases pushing food beyond many in need, this Lift reminds us Joseph prevented starvation for Egypt and others who went there for food. His closeness to God met the needs of countless. We have Joseph's example to do the same. Key to looking at the horizon while working through struggles of feelings of being alone and betrayed, is keeping close to God. With no one else to help, problems give opportunity to cultivate that closeness to grow in grace and understanding. Hey! This Lift isn't just for the big let downs, deep depressions! Remembering Joseph and learning from his example can be put to immediate use with tiny disappointments, irritations, blue feelings. I suspect if followed, it will reduce, or completely head off big personal disturbances. Listening prayer, along with study of the Bible and Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures strengthens bonds of closeness, for like this Lift's title, we learn more about God to apply to daily situations, and expectations. Thanks to all, & special thanks # 39 Margaret!

Thanks, John, for “Learn from Joseph…who was jealously betrayed…sold into slavery…falsely accused…ultimately…Joseph was freed from prison…then appointed to a position of power…and eventually reunited with his family…” Joseph has definitely been an inspiration to me. Any and every circumstance, whether best or worse case scenario, becomes an opportunity to prove the power of Good over evil – the dominion God gave us in Genesis. That’s where I’ve learned to focus my attention more consistently. In Science and Health, under the marginal heading of “Uses of adversity,” Mrs. Eddy wrote, “Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes…spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth. Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the lesson is sufficient to exalt you; for ‘man's extremity is God's opportunity.’ The author has experienced the foregoing prophecy and its blessings…Universal Love is the divine way in Christian Science.” No “seeming vacuum.” Only seamless divine Love. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…” (Matthew 6:33).

Like many others it inspired me throughout my life, having the Bible lessons also as reinforcements and always at a time when I seemed to be in a wilderness period. In one Bible lesson I learned that Joseph was not always the 'underdog' for lack of a better word, but before his trials began, he actually was a showoff to his brothers. An example would be when he boasted to his brothers about his 'coat of many colors', it was explained how in many instances he could have been a bit more humbler. I am sure while in the pit much of the pride and other negative qualities were examined which enabled his journey from pit to prison... etc.

- 9/4/2012Joseph's life was a great example that divine Science (the knowledge of God) will never leave you where it found you... but it will always elevate you, taking you above and beyond material beliefs and closer to God.
The story of Joseph, the son of Jacob, begins in the 37th chapter of Genesis.

- 9/4/2012Thank you so much, John, for pointing out the uselessness of battling resentment of injustice. How easy to think our problems are another's fault - thus giving our disappointments a reason to exist. Joseph's example is so profound.

- 9/4/2012Thanks John!

- 9/4/2012Thank you for this encouraging start to the day; we are indeed blessed, and there is no discouragement that can thwart our way when we keep our thought one with Truth: even the cherishing of our inseparable oneness with God, our loving Creator. Thank you again, John, for the inspiration of your words; in the remembrance of things past, we take courage for our next step.

- 9/4/2012This morning received an important letter in a language I didn't
Betty

- 9/4/2012What a good lift.

Thank you!

- 9/4/2012Thank you John,
This is absolutely beautiful and so on point.
Thnx

- 9/4/2012Joseph knew what his brothers did not, namely that crops grow without rain and without anyone to till the soil.

- 9/4/2012The great lesson that joy is not at the mercy of opinion is so important.

- 9/4/2012Joseph has always been an inspiration to me of patience, hope and tenacity.

- 9/4/2012Thank you so much John.

- 9/4/2012I've just seen the musical "Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat" twice this August at the Chemainus Theatre.

- 9/4/2012Thank you, John and writers.
Thanks.

- 9/4/2012So inspiring and practical. John, this is spot on.
One time I felt very betrayed, yet not disappointed. It simply manifested itself as a wonderful opportunity to love more and it pointed out needed correction. Many of Mrs. Eddy's articles were so to the point, especially "Love Your Enemies" in MIsc. Wr. which highlights Jesus profound teachings in the Sermon on the Mount. - 9/4/2012Thank you, John Q. for a wake-up call I need to remember.

- 9/4/2012Thanks, John, for “Learn from Joseph…who was jealously betrayed…sold into slavery…falsely accused…ultimately…Joseph was freed from prison…then appointed to a position of power…and eventually reunited with his family…” Joseph has definitely been an inspiration to me.

- 9/4/2012Thank you, John and all of the commenters, your ideas can also apply to our thoughts about others. Let us lift our thought about them out of any "pit" of failure or despair.
Thanks again!!

- 9/5/2012I once was an avid TBN viewer, watching several movies made for television by this network. The story of Joseph was one of them and where I first began to truly appreciate the story of Joseph. I am sure while in the pit much of the pride and other negative qualities were examined which enabled his journey from pit to prison... etc.
