10/28: Spiritual mountain climbing

10/28: Spiritual mountain climbing

  1. Thank you, dear Ms. Lesley, that is a beautiful spiritual view and lift!

  2. Thank you Lesley, that was an inspiring Lift and the animated video was good too. How important it is
to keep our thought going up higher to get the complete picture of our true selfhood. It reminded me of what Mrs Eddy says about the Revelator beholding "the spiritual idea from the mount of vision" when describing St John's view of the real man replacing the mortal, material sense of manhood. Even if the climb is slow and very tough at times, the end result is worth every step. Again, thank you Lesley !

  3. Thank you Lesley - a profound, inspired Lift, which is simply and beautifully expressed.

  4. Thank you SO much Lesley. Just the ideas I was needing this morning. Having recently been to Galilee I fully appreciate the "views". Much love and gratitude,

  5. Welcome, Lesley!
Jesus elevated himself, spiritually and physically. http://bible.cc/matthew/5-1.htm.
Going upward and outward we get the advantage of a bigger picture.
Occasionally, as a painter, I need to move back further away from the canvas, to see a bigger picture to balance better the colors or perspective of the piece and see it from another dimension.
When I’m feeling muzzy, overwhelmed, I recognize it as a sign to quit whatever I’m doing and pray. I climb to a more spiritual viewpoint through prayer and again I feel harmony in my life.

  6. Wonderful! Hymn.136 v3 says (or sings!) -" I climb with joy, the heights of Mind, To soar o'er time and space", and it goes on to say that we shall then see Him face-to-face - and time, space and fear become nothing when we seek Him in this way . We find that His presence is with us all the way, has always been with us, and always will be, and we will be forever at peace with God and His wonderful creation. All our false fears will be forever behind and below us as we walk ever onwards and upwards, never looking back. What wonderful fresh views we can have before us from this spiritual height.

There is a lovely allegory in Miscellaneous Writings page 323 which illustrates this lift perfectly.

Many thanks, Lesley for a literally uplifting lift.

  7. Thankyou Lesley for the lovely lift. I live not far from Roseberry Topping and have climbed it many times! Yes the view is amazing and acts like a magnet, drawing lots of people to climb to the top. We don't seem to mind the rough and rugged climb because of what is promised. You have uncovered a beautiful reminder to focus on the promise, not on the struggle, thankyou x

  8. Thank you for this lift, Lesley. It brought me a special smile, as our family stayed many times in a home where Roseberry Topping was in full view, and it just compelled you to climb it. Once I was climbing on my own, and struggling near the top where the path was slippery with loose shale. The couple ahead were helping each other, and I wished I had a helping hand - when the clear thought came, "The Lord is my helper..." It was as though I was gently lifted to the next level without effort...and there was that wonderful view. From there I could understand the pattern of the whole wide landscape, which was hard to see from the ground. As on our spiritual journeys, we're never climbing alone, but God's loving hand lifts us to the next level of understanding and shows us the bigger picture of spiritual reality.

  9. Dear Lesley,

Thankyou so much for the reminder that when we turn to God we turn away from whatever else seems to be clamouring for our attention. It is in this turrning away that we mentally rise up on the hill. Once we are on the hill the pressing issues do not seem so loud and we are effortlessly able to move through them. Thankyou so much for this mental uplift.

  10. Thanks for that picture of getting on top to "see" and to understand.

6 js : Thanks for your thoughts!!

  11. Thanks so much, Lesley, for this reminder of the first big hill I went up when I was 7 or 8. It was far bigger than it looked in the distance, many miles from where I lived. Mountains that my family later met were far larger, but can have taken no greater physical or mental effort, or given a greater horizon, than that first hill of mine: 'Mountains of the Mind,' to quote a book title, No surprise that Jesus found what he needed in the mountains. And yes, that childhood 'mountain' of mine was Roseberry Topping.

  12. Dear Lesley, thank you so very much for these wonderful clear thoughts. Yes I, too, love the hills and mountains. Have so often been in the Alps and thoroughly enjoyed climbing up and staying on top of the mountain, until my husband would tell me to get up and start moving down again. Our children were waiting for us. But the memory of the sight from up there stays with me as something almost undescribably beautiful. Once, when I was in my early twenties I joined a group of about 5 young men to climb a mountain near Innsbruck at 1 a.m. in order to be up on top for sunrise. Well, this was quite an exceptional experience: the sun coming up over the horizon, but the valleys, villages and roads were still in a mist until the sun broke through all the fog, clouds and mist and bathed everything in light. After this spectacular sunrise most of the others went back down, but one of them and I continued our hike in order to "master" another one of the mountains. "From glory unto glory ..."
Thank you again - and much love to you.

  13. Many thanks Lesley for that inspiring lift. Yes, let's "Climb to a higher more spiritual viewpoint through prayer." "Rise up and walk! God [Love] made you free,/ born of His liberty./ Carefree and strong, you are His song,/ perfect for all to see./ Mountains and seas, great rising trees,/ echo the joyous song:/ Heaven is here, harmony’s bliss/ to everyone belongs." (Christian Science Hymnal Supplement #453).

  14. This LittleChild loves to hike up a hill, whether it's a mental hurdle or physical challenge. Roseberry Topping -- dig that name! -- sounds like a fun climb and gorgeous view.

While I love every aspect of your message, Lesley, I must ask the fine illustrator about the absence of something -- actually, someones -- that perhaps only a LittleChild would notice:

Midst the beauty of the flowers, grass, trees, and rivers, midst the harmonious relations of the humans depicted here, where, pray tell, are the animals?

Why overlook these essential aspects of spiritual creation?

Why get so caught up in our "important" human interactions and activities that we ignore their gentle presence?

Is that how God feels about the beings of His who express "less of Mind"? (see Miscellaneous Writings, p. 36).

    I don't think so.

DL team, would you please give a token nod to the infinite array of our Maker's nonhuman creatures in future animations?

Each is a uniquely designed individual with a full complement of Love-inspired qualities.

In the North Yorkshire Moors pastures and streams, we see pygmy shrews and pied flycatchers, sparrow hawks and sandpipers, lapwings and graylings, golden plovers and grey wagtails, deer and dippers, redshank and ring ouzels, wood warblers and wheatears.

Time to brush up on your fur, feather and fin depictions, DL artists!

Let's soar with the swallows! :-)

  15. The idea of going higher helped me just a few hours ago, when I woke up choking. Instead of tightening up and coughing for several minutes, I consciously decided to relax and take my thinking to the infinity of God, starting with Love. With just a few sputters, I found myself settled and feeling that fullness of Love. I never got to any of the other synonyms but fell right back to sleep. What a blessing the teachings of Christian Science have been in my life.

  16. Thank you for this Lift, Lesley. I used to love climbing these not too strenuous hills. Enough of a challenge, enough of a struggle, but certainly worth the effort to gain the view. It's certainly similar to meeting the need to pray, and accepting the opportunity to help someone in need. In the south west of Western Australia we have Gooseberry Hill, with a steep pitch and hairpin bends for the little steam train to chug up. It takes a while so the passengers get out and pick flowers, and many prefer to walk to the top! I was visiting a friend there, and Anne's mother was in sudden need. I immediately went to Mutte, and spoke with her through Anne, since she only spoke Danish. Mutte responded at once, and next day the doctor could find nothing wrong with her. She had gained a higher view of herself as a spiritual child of God, and was restored to her very grateful family.
Thank you for this wonderful week Nathan, and the lecturers for the topics you chose; to the BoL, the support crew and the vibrant Lifters, "changing the world through prayer."

  17. Thank you so much for your wonderful lift Lesley. Many is the time when I climbed to the top of Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire to see more clearly the spiritual reality of things, and climbing down was always such a joy, filled with renewed appreciation for all that God gives each one of us. Thank you once again - your lift has taken me right back to Ilkley Moor with the magnificent views and a fabulous place to really listen for all those wonderful spiritual messages.

  18. Thanks Lesley. It reminds me about hymn 136 especially this line '
'I climb with joy the heights of mind to soar over time and space.''

Any challenges that faces me i always climb with joy the heights that God lifts me knowing well that,
When a man lifts you up, it's definitely to the height of his hands, but when GOD lifts you up it's limitless.

  19. I was thinking "What a good and solid lift", when I remembered a sentence from Mary Baker Eddy's major work, the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Thinking about the true, spiritual nature of creation, she wrote: "Spiritually interpreted, rocks and mountains stand for solid and grand ideas." That's on page 511. Thanks for this lift and the clear illustration of the point.

  20. Thank you for this wonderful Lift It lifts me up to higher thoughts. The hymns mentioned by the Lifters are really great. Thanks to one and all.

  21. thank you lesley - june uk

  22. thank you lesley - june uk

  23. Thank you so much for your lovely Lift up Roseberry Topping , Lesley! I've never been there, but loved hearing about it and it's view! Each morning when we greet the new day we are on our spiritual climb as we read the daily Bible Lesson ( from the Bible and Science and Health) and commune with God in prayer. These activities give us a higher, mountain top view, as we travel through our day, and I'm grateful for them!
Than you Lift Team for the fun video, and thank you Lifters for your very inspiring comments!
Have a wonderful, and uplifting weekend everybody! xo

  24. Very nice visual presentatioin and beautiful thoughts. Thank you all.

  25. Thank you for this encouraging lift and the graphic presentation.

  26. What a wonderful Lift, Lesley! It brought to my thought words from the lovely hymn #218 in the Christian Science Hymnal ....verse 4..."the freer step, the fuller breath, The wide horizon's grander view;..
I am so very grateful for the Daily Lifts, for their content and for their insight, and also for the Lifters who present their own thoughtful and helpful interpretations

  27. The mountain of my childhood was called "Elephant Rock" and it was where we picked blueberries in August. When i was 6 yrs old, I packed a peanut butter sandwich and a jar of milk and walked the two miles to what i thought of as a mountain, climbed up, and spent the day with God. I didn't tell God about the struggles in my family; I knew I didn't need to. I sat and watched the sunlight stream through the birch trees and visited with God. I remember being extremely peaceful there. From age 2-5 yrs, I lived next door to a saging CS Practitioner who had my brother and me over for cookies and milk almost daily. She told us bible stories. Somehow, I gleaned that God lived on a mountaintop and that was where I needed to go to connect with Him when urgent help was needed. At dusk, I turned to go home just as the police and my mother "found" me. What a hullabaloo! But in the days since, there were miracles abounding in my family. Though i am not a Christian Scientist and , forgive me, am still taking meds, I am so very grateful for all that I learn about my relationship with my Father in Heaven from Mrs. Eddy's teachings and followers. One day I will see myself as whole and "perfect as God sees me" as Christ Jesus instructs and as I already know in my heart is the TRUTH about me. Love you all.

  28. Thank you, Lesley! Can't wait until Sunday to share your inspiration in my Sunday School class. With love,

  29. What a beautiful way to end the week - music, video, and inspiring message. Thanks to js #6 for the reference to Miscellaneous Writings p. 323 "The Fruit of the Spirit" "An allegory" which I immediately read. It so clearly describes so many of us, but the closing paragraph on p. 328 has a wonderful promise: "He alone ascends the hill of Christian Science who follows the Way-shower, and spiritual presence and idea of God. Whatever obstructs the way, - causing us to stumble, fall, or faint, those mortals who are striving to enter the path, - divine Love will remove; and uplift the fallen and strengthen the weak. ..."Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those which are before." Then, loving God supremely and thy neighbor as thyself, thou wilt safely bear thy cross up to the throne of everlasting glory."

I have thoroughly enjoyed the 360 degree view from the highest mountain top at Innsbruck on a beautiful sunny afternoon, sitting alone with God and being so inspired, rising above all of my fears and problems. We all have a mental mountain top we can go to in silent prayer that it always waiting for us.

  30. To Dear #27. You ARE a beautiful, wonderful Christian Scientist; no need asking forgiveness for "still taking meds." Glasses, hearing aids, canes, "meds" - are all dropped as our understanding of "our true perfection" increases. It is the upward journey that matters being supported by other Christian Scientists and seekers of TRUTH! Have a blessed day!

  31. Lovely message and video. Thank you!

  32. Such a sweet Daily Lift. Thank you so much.

  33. Such a simple, but powerful, bit of inspiration this morning. Thank you!

  34. Thank you for your very special thoughts on mountains, ascending thoughts. For many years we lived on a dairy farm on Mount Sherman in the Ozarks in Arkansas. It isn't a high, steep rugged mountain, but looking out from it you do feel the loftiness and inspiration of the ascending thought and feel God's presence. I often would walk to a special place and meditate. When I returned all the problems big small that were bothering me were resolved. I don't live there any more but I do go back mentally to my special overlook to raise my thinking above " the the mist and shadow into Truth's clear day. Where my hart is singing, I have found the way." Thank you, J

  35. Thank you, dear, sweet Lesley! Your lilting English accent and gentle pauses between words lifted me up to a higher view! Thank you for that very sincere Christian Science Treatment! Today, and all weekend, let's all "climb with Joy the heights of Mind, to soar..........." Happy weekend and Love to All!

  36. Thank you.

  37. Your 'Lift' this morning was truly inspiring. I loved the reference to climbing to a higher view. There is a thoughtful, peaceful 6-minute video of the climb to Roseberry Topping on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb3zeC0ClWE
YouTube also has several other videos of Roseberry Topping to help visualise the climbing experience described in the 'Lift'. Once again, thank you, Lesley, for this precious sharing. And thanks to all those writers who pointed to one of my favourite hymns (136). We can all "climb with joy the heights of Mind".

  38. I am so glad to be home and able to get the Daily Lift! What a beautiful one today! Thanks so much, Lesley, for being on my computer this morning.
I'm going to send this one to a young man I love who asked for help in finding a true love. So much is ours when we make the effort to have a higher ideal of Man as God sees him. We can't improve our matter models until we have higher ideals to base them on. When that happens the changes we need to make in our own lives follow. This is the higher view I get when I climb the mental mountains and see the better view of us all.
I will be in England, thank you God, for 3-4 months next summer and one place I will be stopping is in Yorkshire, my most loved county! I think a visit to Roseberry Topping is a good place to start! Thanks for your sweet uplift to see the higher view today.

  39. Love the thought shared today, and the graphics are adorable. Many years ago, my Christian Science teacher told us, "You have to learn to love the uphill, and then it's downhill all the way." It's not easy on those uphils at times, and discouragement can try to set in or just plain getting tired and giving up! But when we keep going, like Lesley shared with us, the 360 degree view at the top is awe inspiring, and so very worth it. And, Mrs. Eddy never gave up! She set the bar for us! :)

  40. Harmony...right where you are! Thank you for this really soft and lovely promise as we raise our thoughts to see the beauty and allness of God, good from a mountaintop view. And what a neat name for the mountain...Roseberry Topping.

  41. Thank you Lesley for this Spiritual climb.

  42. Thank you Lesley,
This reminds me of a common lament I hear at church that there is too much to read, too much to study, too much to hear, too much to do, etc. We just can't do all of it... as if we are surrounded by too many opportunities and overwhelmed by so much good.

Then I think about Jesus and visualize him surrounded by multitudes asking for help with their difficulties. Because he saw the higher view, he was able to handle all his own responsibilities, but also the countless and severe problems of others. When things closed in on him, he climbed to the top of (overcame) mortal mind to see the higher spiritual 360° view of all the spiritual goodness that surrounded him.

He was not overcome by the bounty of goodness and spiritual resources available to him, but as you pointed out, he was able to “glimpse something of the full picture” (I love that) and that was sufficient to meet the immediate needs.

If you are thirsty, divine Mind leads you to the well, but you don't have to drink all of it. You just need enough for today. Once we drink it truth, it becomes a wellspring inside us and when demands are pressing, it gives fresh impulse of the consciousness of harmony right where we are.

Jesus asked the woman at the well to give him drink, but also offered her living water to "never thirst again". Likewise, we simply need to imbibe the Spirit to be well, think well, act well and expect all will be well and that doesn't mean we have to carry “the well” with us.

  43. Good morning Lesley and daily lift team; I have never experienced the literal mountaintop climb that so many of you have described. However, one of my favorites quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr. said
" I have been to the mountaintop and have seen the promised land." I have glimpsed many times God's promises on the spiritual mountaintop after praying and found solutions to pressing problems. Also having never experienced the real mountaintop, the closest that I have come to this is when on a huge boeing 747 or some other aircraft, upon descending have had some great prayerful moments during these flights and where healing resulted. Thank you Lesley this was truly an inspiring lift.

  44. Thank you so much Lesley. I truly needed an uplift today and as always knew that would come. Todays was amazing from you as I grew up in the Cotwolds, remember walking the rolling hills with my mother, which I can no longer do and this month is the anniversary. I miss her terribly and cannot visit those hills on this day to honor her as Iive in Florida. Your lift removed the sadness and joy of her is with me.

  45. Thanks so much Lesley for this mountain top view to take into our weekend. A lovely way to wrap up this week. And Thanks Donna for your comforting words to #saved 27; just what I was wishing to say. We are all one;no need for apologies. "Soaring or'e time and space .." from that mountain top. And while I haven't been to your precious Roseberry Topping, I'm grateful for the gorgeous mountains where I live which serve as constant spiritual metaphors. Thanks everyone.

  46. BEAUTIFUL! Thank you

  47. After hearing and seeing the Lift and reading the 40+ comments so far, I feel bathed in purifying Love. Thank you, every one. One line in the LIft sparkled especially for me: you've glimpsed something of the full picture. Oh, how that heals. And #8 Fenella, special thanks for your thought that we are never climbing alone, that God's loving hands are there to lift us onward and upward.

  48. A winner! So clear, so practical, so helpful and so true. Thank you!

  49. Overlooking Lake Michigan on top of the high sand dunes in Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes i I had a similar experience a great sense of peace was present, a appreciation for God's beautiful landscape, a sense of dropping all the material confusion going on in the material world to seeing the peace and oneness of God. You could tell others there were also feeling this awe inspiring peace high above this great body of water.

  50. Kathryn

Peace-full and so inviting. Thanks Lesley!

  51. I love all the Daily Lifts, including this one! May I say that the animations, for me, are especially endearing. The animator captures the spirit of each "Lift," and conveys it simply and beautifully. Please thank that person! And Nate, your intros are so full of warmth and love. The music is always just right. What a fine team.

  52. Thank you Lesley for the inspiring, beautiful message. Much love to all.

  53. Thanks Lesley. For months, I've been "perching" at Decorah, Iowa eagle nest. Not much time to watch nest restoration, its there when I'm near screen for glimpses, & for meals. Hymn #136, mentions soaring o'er time & space, so today, I've climbed as eagles on wings of love. You've inspired a stunning view. I know this day does not age me, for Ps. 103 promises youth is renewed like the eagles. It also promises being free from iniquities, healed from ALL diseases, redeemed from what may seem to be destructive in my life, and that of others. I'm reminded I'm receiving loving kindness and tender mercies. It was worth taking time for the view, and the way was eased by rising on the warm, uplifting "thermal" of this daily Lift. From this height, if I see trouble anywhere, I feel closer to the heavenly help of Love's angels for me or whomever looks like may be in trouble. Climbing on foot is worth the trouble. I'll do that, too, for tiny beauties of mossy rocks, mist moistened leaves, late flowers, and scampering creatures, along with birds' music reminds, that even in what seems like daily uphill struggles, to look for signs of beauty and blessings. Thanks to this Lift's message, I'll soar daily, and climb a mental footpath weekly, to glimpse more often than I've been, the wonderful spiritual view. #6 js, thanks, #16 Margaret Thanks for sharing. #27Saved special thanks. I see you that way now. #37 John, thanks for link. #42 Michael thanks about Church! #44 Lorraine, love to you.

  54. One of the best Lifts yet. So helpful. Interpretative, great analogies, perceived outcomes from this perspective. I will save this one, Leslie, for sure. Thank you so much for the inspiration. Hope to hear many more from you as you help us understand Jesus' way and the words of the Bible, and Mrs. Eddy's meanings. Bless your heart!!

  55. Thank you so much for the beautiful message and the video, Lesley! It is so helpful to know that with some effort to climb the mountain of spiritual altitude, we see the beauty of God's creation and when we recognize it, demands are becoming less.

  56. Such an uplifting and revealing new sense of clarity about God. Thank you very much.

  57. Thank you for this truly inspiring thought. It certainly inspired many healing, helpful comments. A troubling thought presented itself this afternoon. It woke me up at 2:am, and now, nearly 4, and I am ready to go back to bed, all smiling. What lovely people, sharing such lovely ideas, sending thought into new paths. Bless you all.

  58. Thank you.

  59. Thanks so much for that reminder that the effort to reach a higher vantage point is always worth it - I really needed to hear that today.

  60. Clever Graphics Great Lift Very moving. Thanks Lesley

  61. What a wonderful REMINDER. That's what the Comforter does. It brings 'all things' into our rememberance. Thank You so much. I think I'll go mountain climbing today!

  62. Thanks so much Lesley for taking us at the top of the mountain to see the beautiful view. Yes of course it takes a lot of effort to rise highter to spiritualise thought and see the larger and lovelier picture. But its worth the effort. Am so deeply grateful to you and the whole team of "Your Daily Lift" who play a vital role in bringing fresh inspirations daily. These daily lifts, many a times, address the speicific problems we face and bring lovely healings to thought, restoring harmony and joy in our life. Love you all and God bless.

  63. Thank you Leslie. Today I stayed home from school because I wasn't feeling well. I had some soup, and was planning to rest- but instead of giving in to that suggestion of inharmony, I'm going higher to see what God says. I'm going to climb and look for the spiritual view of God's man. It's not sick. This is a good chance to get close to God, and feel His LOVE, right now... for me an everyone!

    Love you all!
