Thank you John for this important Lift. Mary Baker Eddy says in S&H, page 183, "Divine Mind rightly demands man's entire obedience, affection, and strength. No reservation is made for any lesser loyalty. Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. Submission to error superinduces loss of power." Obedience puts God front and center in our lives. This allows God's plan for us to be fulfilled.

When times are tough doesn’t really matter whose fault it was.
We need to know that when our prayers are truly humble and honestly unselfish, God always hears us and always responds —maybe not in the way we might want to—God is not human after all!
Daniel knew this in the lion’s den, (Daniel 6) Jonah had to learn it the hard way in the whale’s belly three days and three nights(Jonah 1).

Thank you John, for a very clear message today. How important it is for us to be obedient to avoid having to retrace one's steps in order to get God's blessing. Christ Jesus understood this so well, as Mrs Eddy says in Science and Health page 20 where she writes "....he swerved not, knowing that to obey the divine order and trust God, saves retracing and traversing anew the path from sin to holiness".

One of the young men I see volunteering a few hours each week at the museum I belong to is on public assistance and making the transition from a past life that most of us only read about in the news media. And this is what must be done, just as Jonah had to do, to leave behind friends and lifestyles that are destructive. It takes effort to do the right thing, but it is nothing compared to not doing the right thing. Since this is an audio production, I can not express too much my thanks to be able to listen in at any time of the day.
Paying to do the right thing is a much better thing than paying to do the wrong thing, as the Jonah story unfolds it. This podcast is a great help.

John, Thank you,the message is clear, and on target[Obedience].When Love called me to serve as "Christian Science Nurse" as in Jonah it meant leaving behind me my beloved South Africa and serving in foreign countries, the struggle was ever nigh to give up and go
back home",run away from the "Conviction" to serve God in my love for my fellow man.The story of Jonah was of great inspiration for me.When the clouds seemed really low and dark the verse in Mathew 9:62 "And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God". Joyous to say after choosing obedience to God and serving with love, my fellow man in many distant lands, Love guided me back to South Africa, serving in the Full time Practice of Christian Science Healing.

What a helpful lift to remember when in dire circumstance, like Jonah. The saying came to me "Man's extremity is God's opportunity". God is waiting to heal and bless us always, and particularly when we seem to have nowhere else to turn, and then we are ready to let God help us and save us. And He always will when we turn to Him with all our hearts. What a comfort!
As always I am very grateful for all who deliver these lifts, and all the people who comment with such sincerity and unselfishness and love.

What an inspiring message, thanks so much John. And thanks for all of the thoughtful comments. I have notes from an article, "THE DESTRUCTION OF BABYLON" by Mark McCurties (Journal, July 2012) which includes this short statement, "In reality, God could not put us where He is not." I have found this article so helpful.
Speaking of articles, the Sentinel of October 29, 2012 has two outstanding articles from our friends. First, on page 11, "Love casts out demons" - thanks so much Nate for sharing your experiences and giving a fresh approach to demons. How rewarding to have your prayers be so effective.
Next on page 14, "A prophecy fulfilled" - thanks Malcolm Drummond for bringing back fond memories. During World War II, Eastman Kodak Company employees in England evacuated out their childred to families of Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York (which is my home town). I gained a sister for the duration of the war who remains a very dear, close friend and lives in Toronto, Canada. I always wanted to attend Principia College - never made it, but my brother did and graduated in the late 1950's. So I have visited their campus and seen the house where he lived.
How great it would be if we could all have a family reunion of commenters and get to know each other more personally!

Terrific. I can relate to Jonah and really appreciate how persistent God was in calling him. The reluctant servant can't resist the impetus for and from God, Good forever. Since we are never really separate from our Creator, we are always being ushered to our rightful purpose of being a blessing even when it looks otherwise. As you said, John, "Christian Science affirms that God is ever present good and never nearer than when the need is greatest." Thank you.

It is quite hard to do the right thing, especially where human relationships are involved. I have a wonderful Nurse Aide taking care of me, 24/7 for the last ten years, never taking a vacation because of fear for my welfare. Now she wants to take a vacation and the fear that welled up in me of her leaving me to others is quite a temptation to worry about, especially when she says to me, "Dad!" She always calls me Dad, since her father died when she was quite young, "If you don't want me to leave, I won't." What a temptation, but when I read today's Daily Lift about what troubles Jonah had when he gave in to the temptation to do his own thing and not listening to God's direction, I immediately rose to thwart that selfish temptation and happily told the Nurse Aide; "Don't worry yourself, come on, I'm no baby. God will supply my human needs just as he did all these years. Please go and enjoy, you deserve it."

Two days ago my right shoulder suddenly "kinked" with a sharp severe pain, and I couldn't move my arm without pain. It was as if a nerve was pinched in the shoulder joint. A dear friend who was present at the time offered me some Absorbine Junior, a lotion supposed to relieve muscle pain and skin irritation. I had often offered to my friend the fact that God was more powerful than Absorbine Junior, so it was not difficult to refuse her kind offer. But I did feel a bit like Jonah, held helpless in a material circumstance. I was scheduled to do some heavy lifting moving church pews the next day, and didn't know whether I would be able to do so with one arm. Again I was offered Absorbine Junior, and again I emphatically refused, knowing that God was more powerful than Absorbine Junior. I decided not to lie down and accept the condition, but to actively rely on help from God. Within a few minutes I heard a small "click" in my shoulder and lost all pain and restriction. Yesterday I was able to spend a long day moving heavy pews and drive a truck a long distance. God is indeed a "very present help in trouble", and is more powerful than any material lotion.
Thanks for the story about Jonah, who obtained his freedom by turning to God, and for this opportunity to share my story.

Thank you, John, for “Feel like Jonah? … how Jonah received the word of God to speak out against evil … his unwillingness to obey …” Yes. Studying the Bible Lessons, I've considered what Tarshish and Nineveh might represent. The former was Jonah’s choice to disobey God, leading him and others into dangerous waters, until Jonah was reduced to the equivalent of “fish vomit.” When Jonah finally obeyed, not only he but all of Nineveh was blessed beyond what anyone might have imagined. Why do I disobey or am slow to obey? Probably a mix of "mere mortal" fear, laziness, and arrogance. It's hard sometimes to accept the concept of total trust in the ever-presence of and easy-access to all Good unfolding, uninterrupted. And yet, Christian Science has taught me how to rise to my "child of God" true self and continue to prove, with scientific certainty, test-by-test, that instead of that spiritual fact of the “Sustaining Infinite,” being “Too good to be true,” it’s “Good enough to be the Truth of being.” For real! I’m grateful for the Jonah experiences, teaching me that eventually I do obey, proving repeatedly that I can trust God more than my own limited sense of “what’s best.” So my prayer is to live less like Jonah and more like Jesus. Jesus proved the healing power of unceasing prayer and unwavering obedience. Obedience to every Nineveh-calling becomes as an ark of safety for all concerned. Thank you, dear Daily Lift family for all the outpouring of love every day.

I loved this gentle reminder of God's ever presence, even when we seem to have something's to do, that we're sure we can't do or just plain don't want to do! God does take us right through these trials and through them we " win and wear the crown" as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Healthon p. 254:30-32. Sometimes it isn't easy to do, standing up for things of God, but do it we must, as dear Jonah did! I've learned this many times and spent many hours in prayer to God only to realize that, he had "my back" all the time! From telling Moses when sending him into face Pharoah, "certainly I will be with thee" Ex.3:12 to Christ Jesus' affirmation that "not as I will, but as thou wilt" Matt. :26:39 we all must fulfill God's will for us, even if we think we don't want to! It's really not so hard when we remember, we're not " sailing alone" God's here with us directing us through it all! Thank you so much for reminding me of this today!

Thank you for this message which goes right with this week's Bible Lesson. I've been studying and praying for more understanding as I work through a difficult family relationship, and yesterday, I was so moved to just stop all the clatter and I opened S&H and the sentence "Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way." pg 326 :20. stood out to me. Well, that short but powerful message which I read over and over throughout the day until I could say it in my head was just what I needed to erase false claims that I am little Jonah stuck in the whale of darkness. I began to understand that I MUST be obedient to the One Mind which governs, guards and guildes.

Through your message I finally understood that obeying God is always the road to the all encompassing love and protection of God. Disobedience takes us off the road. I am sure some form of fear kept Jonah from initially obeying God, for it always leads us astray. As I listen to this message it seemed so clear that whenever we are obeying God we are in the mental environment that brings all the protection and right ideas to accomplish that mission and keep us safe and on the path home. Thanks for sharing your insight.

What strikes me this time about the Jonah story is that Ninevites were so ready to respond to the message to "repent", change their thinking and behaviour, and that Jonah had no human means to know this would be the outcome when he obeyed God's instructions or hesitated to do so. I recently had a couple of experiences where sharing information about Christian Science turned out to be very timely, a great reminder that everyone's spiritual journey is under God's direction and our possible supporting role is for God to know and for us to co-operate with.

- 10/24/2012Thank you John, for a very clear message today.

- 10/24/2012One of the young men I see volunteering a few hours each week at the museum I belong to is on public assistance and making the transition from a past life that most of us only read about in the news media.

- 10/24/2012John, Thank you,the message is clear, and on target[Obedience].When Love called me to serve as "Christian Science Nurse" as in Jonah it meant leaving behind me my beloved South Africa and serving in foreign countries, the struggle was ever nigh to give up and go
back home",run away from the "Conviction" to serve God in my love for my fellow man.The story of Jonah was of great inspiration for me.When the clouds seemed really low and dark the verse in Mathew 9:62 "And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God". Joyous to say after choosing obedience to God and serving with love, my fellow man in many distant lands, Love guided me back to South Africa, serving in the Full time Practice of Christian Science Healing.

- 10/24/2012What a helpful lift to remember when in dire circumstance, like Jonah.

- 10/24/2012John, Thank you,for this reminder "Obedience"!
name

- 10/24/2012What an inspiring message, thanks so much John.

- 10/24/2012Terrific.

- 10/24/2012It is quite hard to do the right thing, especially where human relationships are involved.

- 10/24/2012Two days ago my right shoulder suddenly "kinked" with a sharp severe pain, and I couldn't move my arm without pain.

- 10/24/2012Thank you, John, for “Feel like Jonah?

- 10/24/2012Dear John,
Thank youso much for this Lift. I brought home that obdience to God is imperative and absolute
- if wedo not obey the only ONE then you have no hope nd you get into all sorts of woe. Animag gets you and youre indundated with aggressive mental suggestions. So one error leads t another.
Much love and prayer is needed day in our lives

- 10/24/2012I loved this gentle reminder of God's ever presence, even when we seem to have something's to do, that we're sure we can't do or just plain don't want to do!
In Progress
- 10/24/2012Thanks, John! I must be able to relate to Jonah, because I laughed aloud at your description. Who would ever think that being vomited out by a fish would be a good thing? But it was a great moment for Jonah, and for us. A beach vacation from self-will.

- 10/24/2012Thank you for this message which goes right with this week's Bible Lesson.

- 10/24/2012Through your message I finally understood that obeying God is always the road to the all encompassing love and protection of God.

- 10/25/2012What strikes me this time about the Jonah story is that Ninevites were so ready to respond to the message to "repent", change their thinking and behaviour, and that Jonah had no human means to know this would be the outcome when he obeyed God's instructions or hesitated to do so. I recently had a couple of experiences where sharing information about Christian Science turned out to be very timely, a great reminder that everyone's spiritual journey is under God's direction and our possible supporting role is for God to know and for us to co-operate with. Thanks to all the Lift team and all the commentators for their loving work.
