Thank you, Marie, for “Just like Bartimaeus … called out to Jesus … ‘I want to see’ … in receiving his sight … he would see himself … as … God created him …” Calling out to the Christ “just like Bartimaeus,” is the shortest distance and fastest route between needing healing and being healed immediately, completely, permanently. Before learning about Christian Science, I had hoped. Now I know.

Thank you Marie for this very helpful Lift. Faith is what moves the balance to God to outweigh error. This faith (in the power of God to heal) leads to the understanding that all things are possible to the one, infinite divine Mind. This is the point where healing begins. Our status as a struggling mortal changes to that of the image and likeness of God. In the words of Mary Baker Eddy, in S&H page 263, "When mortal man blends his thoughts of existence with the spiritual and works only as God works, he will no longer grope in the dark and cling to earth because he has not tasted heaven."

Manual of the Mother Church, Article VIII Section 4: "It shal be the duty of every mumber of this Church to pray each day: 'Thy kingdom come;' let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin ...". Thank you for making this connection to Bartimaeus, it truely sheds a whole new light on this prayer for me; Dear Lord, I want to see!

I think Jesus responding to Bartimaeus by asking what he wanted him to do is interesting because it shows Jesus never saw him as blind.

Jesus saw the perfect man already whole and complete.

There is an important lesson here because if a patient reaches out to a practitioner for help and the practitioner sees the patient as anything other than God's perfect child then they already lost the case.

I liked the connection between Bartimaus casting away his cloak with his leaving behind him all the mortal thoughts that would restrict him. This explains Mrs Eddy's words in Science and Health:

"Let us disrobe error. Then, when the winds of God blow, we shall not hug our tatters close about us."

Perhaps this is why it was necessary for Moses to take his shoes off before he approached the burning bush.

Thanks also for the connection between seeing and understanding. When I was in education and used to ask children "Do you see" I realised that I was not asking whether they could see my human frame. I was asking them whether they understood the facts I was explaining.

Thank you very much for this inspired DL. Sometimes it is difficult to see through the images that mortal mind sends forth but I agree with Rob Number 5. Jesus was able to heal Bartimeus because he never saw him as blind in the first place. Let us not be deceived by what senses are trying to say and let us always see what God is seeing of us and others.

Thank you so much Marie, As Tony #6 says Bartimeus had to cast away the cloak of blindness in order to see the truth about himself as the perfect child of God. We all seem to have a cloak of some sort which tries to attach itself to us, limiting us in various ways ; poverty, sickness, misery, homelessness,unemployment, and so on.. As we cast whatever appears to be hindering our advancement spiritward, aside and claim the truth about who we really are, so we can go froward joyously in the knowledge that we are complete in every way, without a mortal history that would impose limitations on us. Thank you , once again Marie for an inspiring lift!

Thank you for this Lift! I love this story and found some interesting insights regarding it in the Researched Bible Guide Bible Notes when it was in the Lesson last month. “A beggar’s cloak was commonly spread out on the ground to receive alms, to that we are perhaps to think of Bartimaeus pushing it aside in his eagerness rather than taking it off. Like others who are called by Jesus, he abandons everything he has.” Black’s New Testament Commentaries. Also one commentary pointed out how the crowd is transformed: "The crowd’s sudden and complete change of heart indicates the authority of Jesus: they are now as enthusiastic as before they were dismissive, and become the medium for Jesus’ call to Bartimaeus.” New International Greek Testament Commentary. And my favorite: “‘Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, is ‘sitting by the roadside.’ He is, in other words, sidelined or marginalized. The difference in his position ‘beside the road’ at the beginning of the story and ‘on the road’ at the end of the story signifies the difference between being an outsider and an insider, a bystander and a disciple.” The Pillar New Testament Commentary.
It's a story of persistence - not accepting a hopeless state - he used all he had - his voice to call out into the crowd! I love thinking about how Bartimaeus' persistence paid off in multiple ways blessing himself and countless others who witnessed his healing and whoever he, himself, may have healed from following Jesus "in the way" as a disciple!

The word see used by Bartimaeus is to understand. In studying this question of Bartimaeus to Jesus, it came to me that Bartimaeus also wanted to understand his relationship to God more than giving sight to human eyes. Isn't the seeking to understand the Kingdom of God, first, then all these other things would come into fruition?

Yet another marvelous Daily Lift! These healing ideas are infinite. Thank you Marie - for reminding us that we all "want to see," to understand and know what's true - and not according to what material sense might be presenting. As Jesus said to the worried disciples (Mark 8:18) "Having eyes, see ye not!" He know they were not using their "spiritual discernment" (SH 586:3) which throws off that cloak of discordant lies covering our true being! I love Bartimaeus' definite expectant response, "I want to see!" That thought applies to so many things in our lives as well as eyesight. And Bartimaeus was rewarded for his expectation. We, too, can see what God has in store for us today.

Following Jesus’ example, by asking the patient what the patient wants/believes, is an opportunity for the false belief to be revealed. “Consciousness, where art thou? (S&H 308) Healing happens at the point of understanding (even a “glimpse!”) that no healing is necessary because “all is well” – always! There’s only one reality. Only God/Good/Love, itself! is sovereign. The Truth of being never changes. Our belief in powers (sin, sickness, disease, death) other than God/Good/Love, itself! is what needs to yield to the Truth of being. “Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man ... In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy …” (S&H 476).

Welcome to 22! We all want to see only what God made and what Jesus always saw, -- only good, never evil. Always perfection, never any imperfection. True sight. Real vision.

“We are Christian Scientists, only as we quit our reliance upon that which is “false and grasp the true. We are not Christian Scientists until we leave all for Christ.”
Zacchaeus arrived at this conclusion, and took a major step in this direction.

Mrs Eddy says, “the human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual.”

But all sense of leaning on matter is our goal as students of Christian Science, "Trials teach mortals not to lean on a material staff, — a broken reed, which pierces the heart. We do not half remember this in the sunshine of joy and prosperity. Sorrow is salutary. Through great tribulation we enter the kingdom. Trials are proofs of God’s care.” (S&H)

Our God is always with us, guiding us to His loving arms, He sends His angels, leaves us messages, and“With white fingers they point upward to a new and glorified trust, to higher ideals of life and its joys.”

What an exciting step to take that says, Let's leave all for Christ!

Most beggars, when asked what they want, would ask for a shekel. In this case, a great
point was made plainly to all when the blind beggars actions affirmed that he believed
the Christ had the power to heal. Then he WAS healed.

Thank you, Marie, and my dear Lifter family for such precise insights into the meaning of this Lift. I, too, thought that when Bartimaeus said "I want to see" that he meant he wanted to understand better, not literally to "see" better. It is such a fine line at times between seeing spiritually as what we know to be true, and lapsing into material seeing that is often clouded with deception. It is a good wakeup call to remember that we need focus to "see" as God sees- perfect perfection here and now and always.

I love the idea of seeing more clearly as both a physical healing and a metaphor for gaining spiritual sight and insight. In this sense it reminds me of the wonderful story of Elisha and his servant Gehazi. Gehazi was not physically blind but he needed spiritual sight which was - like Bartimaeus - being impeded by fear and a lack of faith.

And as with Bartimaeus, there is a transformation of Gehazi's willingness to see:

"And the eyes of the young man Gehazi fell open and did see: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."

As with Jesus and Bartimaeus, as with Elisha and Gehazi, there is a similar story with Krishna and Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita in which Krishna opens up the vision of Arjuna:

"Throw off this ignoble discouragement, and arise like a fire that burns all before it.
Arise, great warrior. Arise!"

What a beiutiful lift. I've always loved that story so thankyou for putting it into a broader context of hope and healing for all.
