7/23: Build on a rock

7/23: Build on a rock

  1. Thank you Evan for a great Lift. Mary Baker Eddy says in S&H page 492, "For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence." This is always our starting point. It takes us through from cause to effect. It allows us to stand upright on the truth, a sure foundation and not on the shifting slippery slope of mortal belief. Just as the sand shifts whenever the wind blows, the rock remains sturdy, strong, fixed in its position. The rock is the Christ.

  2. Such a wonderful reminder--Principle is the only dependable foundation stone! Thanks Evan!

  3. Thank you Evan for reminding me what the foundation of my thinking should be.

For some time I pondered over the significance of Lot's wife being turned into a pillar of salt until I realised that if we look back to matter as she did and not forward to Spirit then our thoughts are as substantial as salt. Nothing can be built or developed safely on salt because it crumbles so a pillar of salt could support nothing.

The antidote to this type of thinking is the promise of the strong pillar we find in Revelation:

    Rev 3:12

12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

  4. WONDERFUL; THANK YOU.

  5. Thank you so much for that lift and the super video, which helps to make the message so much the more unforgettable!

  6. Thank you, Evan, for “Build on a rock … Are you reasoning out from a “rock” premise … from the Truth of being that God is in control of your life, that God is the only power at work …” This is just great!

… and I’m going to have some fun with it! Today I'll put the “porter at my door of thought” to work, sorting – the rock-solid Truth of being and shifting, shifty, mortal sand. Only Truth “rocks on!” The “sand” gets sifted - outside the door or even and especially if it gets inside!!! It’s simple, really: Mind – yes! mortal mind – no!

“Your decisions will master you, whichever direction they take … Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously” (S&H 392:22).

Up until now, I thought of my porter as kind of a doorman; but now I’m picturing my porter as my bodyguard – or even as, Porter, the gold miner! What fun!!!

  7. Brilliant lift. Many thanks. Enjoy the Netherlands, a lovely country/

  8. Carol, Switzerland
Many thanks, it is exactly the lift I need today, so true and so natural.

  9. Thank you for the wisdom of this daily lift!

  10. Thank you, Evan, for this livfely reminder. Sand are particles of rocks, blown by the wind. But with concrete trust on God they again are becoming a rock.

  11. Jesus spoke of building a house on the rock not on the sand, on a firm foundation that would withstand all kinds of situations, —including tumultuous thoughts.

If we feel that we have only made mistakes in our lives, we can start again and begin to build our lives in a rock firm foundation.

Knowing that God is the only power and acknowledging that only God is governing our lives, our work, our family, our job and our loved ones; we have surely built on the rock, not on the sand.

  12. Thank you Evan, good to be reminded that we have a sure foundation in Principle, which can never be shaken or disturbed, that rock of Christ, Truth. As Hymn 293 says "Christ, the Truth, foundation sure, On this rock we are secure" The Lesson this week points out that when we are listening for God's voice and being obedient to His commands, then we need have no fear that our feet will slide, but be planted in the true path ----"the path which leads to the house built without hands "eternal in the heavens"454;8-9 Science and Health.

  13. Thank you. The rock of Gibraltar is very porous. Mind is solid stuff (substance).

  14. Thank you, Evan! Wonderful, wonderful lift!

  15. Thank you for this great Lift and reminder to stay -keep our thoughts on the Rock.

  16. Thank you Evan,
Isn't it interesting how much mortal man is like that building? We all want to build on a strong, level foundation, but in challenging times, when a weakness suddenly appears, instead of shifting ourselves to where the strength is, our weight tends to fall towards the material weakness instead. Soon we may find ourselves leaning and sliding in the wrong direction.

What prevents us from falling? In the Preface of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy gives the solution stating, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." (vii:1-2).

Yes, when we find ourselves with one foot in the sand and start to lose our balance, we can instead shift our weight to the "sustaining infinite" and continue to lean security there while we shore up any loose rocks and gravel that seem to be chipping away or falling off.

The kingdom of heaven doesn't have sinkholes and God will not let us fall from our high estate. As David assures us, "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. (Ps 91:11,12)

In times of trouble, God is the only temporary crutch we need and He will always sustain us until we get back on our feet.

  17. That is such a great metaphor thank you - the Church built on the rock can never fail, and neither can we. Thank you LIfters too, 12., with quotes.

  18. Many thanks Evan for this very reassuring lift. Yes. How firm is your foundation? "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,/ For I am thy God, I will still give thee aid;" (Christian Science Hymnal #123). "Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." (Rev. 19:6).

  19. Just what I needed this morning- a great reminder of the power of Mind to support and sustain, no matter what the difficulty. Thank you, Evan!

  20. Thank you for this crucial reminder to stay on the Rock, the sure foundation of immortal Truth. Mortal
thought with its winds and waves would try to draw us off the Rock, to distract us with its attempt to picture a man like itself, a man God never made, but if we listen to the Christ, look in God's infinite direction and walk in that untroubled way, we will find ourselves 'unfallen, upright, pure and free' (S&H p 171) .

  21. Today I had to do something important that I was actually dreading, but after listening to this wonderful lift, I realized I was basing my understanding of it on 'sand' by not first checking out the options available to me. Once I did check this out, I found the answer I needed very easily. It had been there all the time, but instead of reading through the options, I'd made up my mind that it was too dificult for me and so I'd put off doing the necessary until the last minute, which nearly cost me a lot of money. Hearing this lift and getting its message changed my thinking and after this I found the answer I needed very quickly. I'm very grateful for this!

  22. Thank you.

  23. It's really all about keeping our feet firmly planted on that very rock, and every time distraction starts to tempt, resolutely regain our footing with the spiritual reality. One of my favourite "rocks" is from No and Yes, "True prayer is not asking God for love; it is learning to love, and to include all mankind in one affection." When we start with love, and continue on lovingly, then love will be our strength and will endure.
Thank you Nate and team, and the whole Lift family - such wonderful comments every evening.

  24. Thank you Evan for such inspired words.

  25. Thank you Evan and many thanks to all the lifters family. We have a firm foundation on the Rock of Truth and this is especially helpful during times of challenge when we are apparently tested because we know that "to those leaning on the sustaining Infinite, today is big with blessings" We can lean but we will never fall from God´s loving arms.

  26. Thanks for message and the video that so beautifully visualizes it. One of my favorite solos sung at The Mother Church by William Burden was "Mark The Perfect Man" and I have downloaded it on my computer so I can listen to it often. It begins with "Cease ye from man whose breath is in his nostrils, For wherein is he to be accounted of?" The fourth verse states speaking of the "Perfect Man":
"He shall cry unto me, Thou are my Father, my God,
And the rock of my salvation:
    The law of his God is in his heart;
None of his steps, his steps, shall slide.

What a beautiful and comforting thought to have God, my Father, as the rock of my salvation. A firm foundation. As the chorus says "For the end of that man is peace." That is a promise from God I can count on.

  27. Thank you! We were hit by superstorm Sandy but our foundations held. For two weeks I was in a bit of a funk, saying and doing the right thing, but nor really present. What brought me out, finally, was, among other things, a (partial) line by Mary Baker Eddy which healed me, helped move us forward: "...Truth engrounds me on the rock, upon Life's shore, 'gainst which the winds and waves can shock, O never more..." Proof: We lost our piano to the storm. Yesterday a friend gave us hers! What did I first play? Shepherd show me how to go. Of ourse, a life-long foundation, if you will.

  28. Thank you for a much needed msg!!!

  29. On a much smaller scale, one of my friends now lives in a farm house which was moved to its present favorable location on a hill in the early 1800's by team of oxen, which was a common procedure in that era with barns and houses. But care was not taken with building a new foundation underneath, consequently it is still to this day nine inches higher at one end of the house than the other end. When we put a foundation under an existing summer cottage in recent years, care was taken to use a transit level and hydraulic jacks to make sure that all four walls came out completely level.
Thank you for the parable of Christ Jesus' "rock premise."

  30. Such a good message and well delivered. The other day I was remembering a workshop lecture you gave in western Maine some years ago. So helpful! I still have the copy of Science and Health w/Key to the Scriptures from that talk where I marked certainly helpful sentences. One of the things you said was: "Be a light bulb, not a sponge!" I understood that to mean don't absorb or be focused on the difficulties around you, but be a shining light or reminder of God's eternal goodness -- a light that helps everyone.

  31. thank you Evan for hitting me on the head with a cricket bat ,
i am now changing everything to get my life back on track
thank you so much , from Frank in Australia

  32. What a wonderful clear metaphor, Evan. Thank you so much--and eternal thanks to Christ Jesus for providing the "Rock". Thank you for this timely message.

  33. Love this .... Thank You. :-)

  35. Thank you Evan, just what I needed to know, and how good it is to read all the helpful comments that followed your message. I was also led to read that grand old Hymn "Rock of Ages" in the Christian science Hymnal (293-295) and how true those lovely words eternally are! Love to All, June U.K.

  36. Enjoying the "Country Hoedown" Music this week! Great example of "Building on the Rock", Evan! Love that Christian Science is based on the Rock of Truth, the spiritual facts of being, not on the Sand of material beliefs! Taking a Stand for the Rock today!

  37. I love how these Daily Lifts are so memorable. Thank you Evan and the whole Daily Lift team!!!

  38. I am on the rock today, Thank you for this lift

  39. Thank you.

  40. SOLID!
    Thank you, Evan.

  41. Such a great DL, especially when we THINK we are slipping. Much gratitude for all of your DL Evan!

  42. Thank you Evan. Words I needed to hear. My foundation seems to be slipping a little lately so I need to build it stronger with Truth and Love, knowing that God is ever present and shoring me up.

  43. Thank you, Evan, for this great Lift!
And thank you, God, for being our forever Rock!

  44. Thank you.

  45. Loved this. Thank you, Evan, all the Daily Lift workers and commenting community for helping keep me on the rock - day after day I get firmed up right here with all of you and I deeply appreciate it.

  46. Truth isn't a bunch of human opinions based on mortal concepts, but on a definite principle based on spiritual evidence of God's existence, when applied to human experiences will always find a harmonious solution. It's the rock that Jesus referred to in his building of his Church, the foundation of Truth and Love that would definitely meet all human needs.

  47. "Rock of ages, Truth divine, be thy strength forever mine; Let me rest secure on Thee, safe above life,s raging sea." Hymn no. 293.

Thank you, Evan, for this beautiful message. We are Rock Solid in Texas.

  48. You are welcome. It's nice to read your inspiring thoughts and ideas. Thanks for sharing.

  49. It is the Christ, the word of Truth, the understanding of Spirit which is our rock, our firm foundation.
Thinking of your leaning cathedral needing a firmer foundation than sand and water, the word "cement"
came to mind, since cement will turn sand and water (and gravel) into concrete. I found this delightful prophecy by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health: "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you. The cement of a higher humanity will unit all interests in the one divinity." (pg 571).
Thanks to Evan, and all on the Daily Lift who contribute to this "cement of a higher humanity."

  50. Thank you Evan for your video lift! The visual leaning tower says it all!
Sometimes, even though often we think we do not have the time to "build on a rock" metaphysically, with one particular situation or another, Christian Science teaches us that leaning on God entirely, is the only "rock" Truth and Love demand. Mrs. Eddy says on p 417 of "Science and Health": "Tell them rather, that their strength is in proportion to their courage". So that, after what appears to be catastrophic mortal mind events in our lives, we need the courage to carefully, deliberately and slowly with love, "build on the rock" foundation when treating ourselves, reminding ourselves that divine Love will provide the harmony necessary. God/ Truth is our building foundation to feel His/Her mercy.

    Hymn #340
    "There's a wideness in God's mercy,
    Like the wideness of the sea;
There's a kindness in His justice,
    Which is more than liberty."

Thank you lifters and The Daily Lift Team!

  51. Thank you. It's just what I needed to hear right now.

  52. Good one Evan.
Liked the video with the message.
And if perhaps our foundation might seem to hit a sandy spot -- and we tilt off-center, we know we can lean on "the sustaining infinite." Science and Health.

"O he who trusts in God's protection
And hopes in Him when fears alarm,
    Is sheltered by His loving-kindness,
    Delivered by His mighty arm;
If ye God's law can understand,
Ye have not builded on the sand." Hymn 216

  53. How I needed this message today, Evan. For the past four or five days, I've been down in the dumps over a hurtful situation. You have helped to expose that rock of Truth which is mine to build upon, again and again. Renewal, redemption -- it rests upon the rock. Thanks.

  54. Thanks, Evan, for the history lesson and the spiritual lesson!

  55. This lift reminds me of the Balanced Rock in the Garden of the Gods, and one also in Utah. Perfectly balanced which, as a child of God, I also am! Never off- balance, always upright. Thank you.

  56. Thank you Evan. The hymn that naturally comes to mind for me is the Rock of Ages, especially the second verse, Christ the truth foundation sure on this rock we are secure..., Hymn 295.

  57. It was delightful to see the large white bird, -- dove ? -- fly behind you as you were speaking, Evan.
Thanks for the good firm reminder to stand secure on the rock.

  58. Excellent....Thanks for such a great illustration of Jesus' saying!...Bob

  59. Thanks Evan. A wonderful reminder that all life is sustained from a Spiritual foundation. Thanks folks for sharing.

  60. So grateful for this video lift this morning, for the comments made, and for everyone contributing to the uplifting of thought today... united we stand on the solid rock of Truth. Love and blessings to you, Evan, and all!
    God is so good!

  61. In order to avoid the mesmerism of shifting sands, we must shift out gaze to the Rock of Christ, Truth, which I once read described as "the ultimate hug" Oh, the everlasting arms of Love, beneath, around , above.

Thank you, Evan, and those who produce these inspiring sharings, and to each upLifter. Thanks to the Lifter who called my attention to the white bird soaring behind Evan in the latter part of the Lift. It adds to the metaphor.

  62. Thank you,thank you,Evan.....and everyone.

  63. A good message to remember at every stage in life. Thank you for this helpful Lift.

  64. Thank you Evan for the uplifting lift.

I surely will check to see that I am building on the rock and not the sand.

Thanks also for the joy and beauty expressed--- in this lift with it's good message.

  65. I love that parable! OK -- here I go moving my house back onto the rock! Thanks Evan.

  66. Many years ago I sued the Housing authority in our area for the County I worked for as the housing was proposed to be built where many government agencies had worked to put flood waters in a stormwater management project.
In one of my motions, I actually quoted the bible verse at issue in today's lift. The housing authority had not complied with the law- which was the topic of Jesus' statement. The point in my motion was that Jesus was saying- those who follow the law build on the rock and those who do not follow [god's ] law build on the sand. The housing was being built on landes and Darwin soil types- sand. And the rains were coming! That was the point of our multi-government agency project.

We got it all resolved by fortifying the new housing and moving it over a bit so we could still have a canal or pathway. The housing got built and it did not cause or experience flooding nor interfere with the bigger flood prevention project.

The point Jesus was making is to have integrity and when we have that basis, we stand in spite of circumstance or weather. The greatest integrity comes from compliance with God's law.

  67. Thank you Evan!

  68. Lots to be grateful for with this Lift: a simple, yet clear analogy from Evan; a well-produced video; a timely and well-distributed DL from the BofL team; and interesting comments or, as #61 said so well, "inspiring sharings from each upLifter."

  69. An addendum.
Building on a rock is a great parable for understanding our spiritual foundation to be the only real substance. It's important to recognize building on a material sense of rock (substance in matter) is problematic.

Building on the material rock, limits our movement, anchors us down and prevents progress. Often, after we have discovered how big this material sense of a rock foundation has become, we cannot move it in one piece. We have to chip away at it eroding it down to sand which can be blown or washed away.

My childlike sense of adventure tells me our spiritual home should be upwardly mobile. Like a snail or turtle, our home is always with us wherever we go. That certainly sounds like the kingdom of heaven to me.

I like to picture us in our mobile home, like a Recreational Vehicle (RV), heading for the beach to play in the sand.

  70. Great visual imagery, Evan! Thank you.

  71. So clear - thank-you

  72. Evan, thank you very much for this presentation! I enjoyed it! Your artistic and creative way holds my attention to your sound advice to keep Jesus's sayings current in my consciousness!

  73. In addition to Evan's presentation, reading #69 Michael's writings is definitely an addendum worth considering. How very interesting!

  74. Thank you, Evan! That was a beautiful Daily Lift--one that we all need to be reminded of!! I like the church imagery!

  75. Thank you, Evan, and Lifter family for uplifting those of us who are feeling "down". I realized with all the comments, that if we are indeed "leaning on the sustaining Infinite", the it IS sustaining us and we simply can't be falling down. We might tilt a little, or perhaps wobble, but we ARE sustained always - by the strength of our everlasting foundation with God. He is our rock, and as His reflection, we too are grounded upon His rock with Him. I sometimes forget to remember that with God, there is no variance. Divine Love IS always meeting our every need and there is no need for worry that He can't continually sustain us - for in Him we have our very rock-solid being.

  76. Oh, Evan, were those horses hooves I heard clip clopping behind you? I enjoy watching their certainty as they enter the path in which they are directed.. Wind, rain, uncertainty may try to divert them from the way, but they progress without question. Solid. Unquestioning. Thank you so much.

  77. Perfect for me right now and always. Thank you Evan.
