1/28: Breaking free from time

1/28: Breaking free from time

  1. Thank you John, what a great Lift. This Lift encompasses a wonderful demonstration that we can all make: living in the "now" of eternity. Breaking away from the mortal sense of time and mortality frees us from these limitations, and brings us "into the newness of life" into immortality, in the words of Mary Baker Eddy, and as you stated, "undimmed by a declining sun." (S&H pg. 246) We are living proof of eternity. Thank you again.

  2. What a lovely Lift! A needful reminder and refresher of living only in the eternal now of infinite and inspirational possibility. Thank you for this thoughtful and gentle Lift.

  3. This message is encouraging and hopeful, therefore, uplifting! Thank you. It is a message for eternity.

  4. Thank you so much.

  5. Many thanks John for this inspiring lift. Yes. "Step into the [real world] of eternity." "The prisoner leaps to loose his chains,/ The weary find eternal rest,/ And all the sons of want are blest." (Christian Science Hymnal #271).

  6. Thanks John, an excellent reminder not to accept the evolutions of material since,

  7. Very thought provoking ! The hymn which comes to mind. Is 272 which says "Our. God shall reign where'r the sun /Does his successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,/ Till moons shall wax and wane no more" and I love Mrs Eddy's definition of DAY in the Glossary of Science and Health where she explains that time is measured "according to the good that is unfolded." Thank you John for this lift which reminds us not to limit good at any time!

  8. "Spirit is all, there is no matter" MBE. "If there is no matter, then there is no space because space is just the distance between two material objects, and if there are no material objects, how are you going to measure space? And they've proved mathematically that if there is no space, there is no time." DLJ

  9. John, Thank you.

  10. Jesus encourages us to break out of the world of limiting time and gave us the model of a life in eternity.
“Before Abraham was I am” John 8:58

God didn’t make the day’s 12 hour cycle, or the 365 day year, God didn’t decide that if you were born under such a horoscope sign you were going to be rich or poor, sick or healthy.
“…I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions” Ecl. 7:29

Isn’t it time to begin “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” 2 Cor. 10:5

Is already time, lets reclaim our rights to the “glorious liberty of the children of God," and be free!” S&H 227:24

CyS 227:25

  11. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu

  12. Oh! is that what Mrs. Eddy meant by 'Cycles of Divine Light'? Thank you....often wondered

  13. Yes, we should measure our progress from our ability to understand God's nature, and therefore our nature as reflections of God, now. What we were able to understand yesterday or an hour ago does not matter. The Kingdom of God is now and eternally so.

  14. Truly brilliant John! Thank you.

  15. Thank you.

  16. Thank you John and Deb #7. Cutting everything down to basics. Where did we ever get the idea that we are ruled by the stars? Seem so archaic when we see ourselves as the spiritual ideas of God. How could the stars surrounding us have anything to do with our eternal lives?

  17. Thank you, John, for “Breaking free from time … Jesus … gives us the model of a life in eternity … Mary Baker Eddy intentionally breaks the idea of a life cycle … mentally step out of a time world into a world of eternity where 'now' is the only 'here' and 'forever' ... " ;-)

As God’s child, Jesus’ disciple, and a Christian scientist, I’ve been experimenting with “eternal moment” living: If there is only one reality, one Truth of being - that same spiritual paradigm Jesus presented and represented; then, I/we, too, can live, accordingly. It’s very freeing but also not easy because the whole world (including me!) is used to running on a mortal sense of life cycles and linear timelines.

As I continue to explore the “cycles of Light,” I go to God in prayer for guidance and protection in keeping my priorities straight, as I practice asking and following through on the question, “What wilt thou have me to do?” I still have my commitments, calendar, and “to do” lists, etc. but I’m learning how to turn them over to God in a spirit of “Thy will be done” and let God BE God to me.

Instead of building today on yesterday for tomorrow, I’m getting better at living in the “here and now and forever” of being God’s child, and a “joint-heir with Christ,” so that I can do my fair share of living “as in heaven, so in earth.”

As Jesus did, I/we can (as a way of life!), “behold the perfect man," rejoicing and being glad while proving that God IS God.

  19. Thank you for a very thoughtful Lift.

  20. Thank you, John, for your precise explanation of 'now'. Mrs Eddy urges us to wake up to the nowness of Life, Truth and Love. I feel this so clearly when I'm praying, and often when I need a word, and God speaks the very word in the stillness and quietness of consciousness. No waiting and no delay. The word just comes to thought, better than I could have conceived, and it so illustrates the true intention of my purpose. Just the 'still, small voice, right here right now."
Thank you Nate and the production team; the Board of Lectureship; and the Daily Lift family.

  21. Thank you John and all those who respond. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a present, a gift from God, eternal now!

  22. Thank you for this precious DL. This came to mend just when I needed it. The issue of the cycles of life is often present in the news, conversations, etc. I have recently retired from active work in the office and the last year I´ve been praying about this moment. Curiously enough when the moment arrived I found that I had no time to think about it. Every day when I get up I affirm that the day I am beginning is for the glory of God. I am learning new things and I try to remember and repeat each day: "Father: This is for Your Glory only". Thank you Nela #17 and all the contributors for the comments that are always most welcome.

  23. I was just about to quote Eleanor Roosevelt when I read #21! I understand her quote to go something like this: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present." My son put it another way: "the past is over; the future is not here yet, but the present lasts forever." I take it to be a good reminder to stay in the moment. I am so grateful for Christian Science.

  24. The concept of eternity, widely taught in Christian Science and that can be reached, as you mention in your lift, through "breaking free from time", is specially difficult for one to acknowlegde and accept, yet very important to understand.
When we are able to grasp the real meaning of it, we experience a remarkable freedom, as Jesus encourages us to try.
Thank you John, for this timely reminder!

  25. What an inspiring Lift that proclaims, "Now is the only here and forever. No need to wait. You can take this step now!" Thank you, John, DL Team, Lifters - and beautiful music, too!

  26. All we really have is the now in the all-presence of God. Much to ponder in tihs gentle lift today. Thank you.

  27. John and team, thank you for this and all of the inspiration you share. This thought just lifts me up this morning.

  28. Thank God for this eternal life!
    Thank you John.

  29. Thank you, John. This is really uplifting, and all the comments are so spot on - particularly I found nela's
comments helpful. Here we all are in the eternal now - every moment is a blessing. Passing so-called material years cannot rob us of our eternal agelessness and freshness. All is forever unfolding spiritual ideas from the one divine source to bless us all.

  30. This is such a powerful and well-thought out Lift! I thank you for sharing the ideas. I am savoring each and every one of them!

  31. Love these ideas. There is only now

  32. That idea of living in the eternal noon is so strong and solid! So was the whole lift! Thank you very much, John!

  33. So good, John. Thank you for making it so simple.

  34. So are we there yet? Yes we are! Great message.

  35. Thanks, John, for such a "timely" message. Jesus said "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32) Free from sin, disease, death and limits of time. Dr. Laurance R. Doyle, a well know physicist, is part of a conversation with Russ Gerber (Sentinel, December 30, 2002) in an article, "A matter of time." He states, "...there has never been a connective force discovered between the orbit of the earth around the sun and the aging of the body. There's no reason why that should occur - it's just something people believe."
He also states, "...time is actually something subjective that we've all begun to pretend is an objective force that causes us to age, or causes things to decay. But it's just a way of looking at the redundancy of matter. If you don't have matter, you don't have time." These profound ideas are coming from a physicist who is also a Christian Scientist. Jeffrey Hildner also talks with Dr. Doyle in an interesting article, "TIME MASTERS" (Sentinel, August 3, 2009). And, Mrs. Eddy in her definition of Day in the Glossary of Science and Health, p. 584, states, "The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded. This unfolding is God's day, and "there is no night there." We have only cycles of divine light.

  36. Thank you for such a clear, simple, and memorable thought. Wonderful!

  37. Who we are, we always are. Jesus just said it straight out. We actually know this also. When someone looks at us as though we are old or young or of some particular limitation, they are missing us. What if we look in a mirror and start to see what they are seeing? We must step back from that mirror and re-think a little bit and there we are! - the same child as forever: God’s child.

Are we God’s child trapped in useless mortal clothing? Do we blame Elisha’s servant for not seeing the full picture on the battle field? However, in order to go forward, it was better that he did and Elisha knew that God included his servant seeing (understanding) and experiencing divine provision right where they were.

No one blames us for fiddling around with a limited view, but God still includes us in seeing the divine provision of eternal (and therefore timeless) Life and it is a lot more helpful to see this than to hold on to the narrow view of spinning around the sun again and again – and counting the trips.

Thank you so much, Tyler, for the clear prompt now!

  38. Wonderful Lift and Comments! I especially enjoyed comments by #23. Thanks everyone, for reminding me to "Stay in the Moment".

  39. Thank you John. Obrigado John.

  40. Thank you for such an inspired message this morning! We can break out of every kind of cycle and see our completeness and oneness with God right now.

  41. Thank you John for this spiritually unfolding idea which you made so understandable. Thank you also Deb#* for adding your ideas which made it a concrete application. I always knew literally there was no " Time " but through John and the lifters expounding on this idea it came to Life as a living application to affirm moment by moment.
Much love to all the Daily Lifters

  42. I love the thought of "man's eternal noon". No rising and setting - just continual reflecting. Seeing the sun's rays very distinctly shining from beneath a cloud recently, I could see that each and every ray was permanently one with the sun; forever reflecting the warmth and light of the sun, it's source, and could never be separated. It does not interfere with other rays; it cannot be cut, shot at, damaged, or in any way touched by ANYTHING. Everything it IS is from its source. In like manner, man has not a single quality underived from Deity, and is likewise untouchable - and ageless. Thank you for this lift.

  43. Thank you, John! What a deep and inspiring and totally metaphysical Lift! Our birthright is eternity, not material birth, material life and material death. If we never accept the lie of being born into matter, we can never experience the lie of dying out of matter! This Lift is helping us "peck open our shells" just a wee bit more! Love the gentle music this week, too!

  44. Very cool, thank you.

  45. Excellent ! Thank u , with love ! :-)

  46. It's so simple in the way you tell it John. I often read in "A treatment for every day" (CSJ 1883) by Mary Baker Eddy: Now is the only time. So precious! Thank you very much John!

  47. Applause! Applause!

  48. That is so right; we only have right now. Thank you John.

  49. Okay! I'm accepting the invitation to mentally step out of the cycle of limited time/money/activity and step into unlimited undimmable NOW

  50. The forever vastness of eternity ... the moment of NOW. Thank you John and all of the DLifters. Thank you for sharing eternity with me.

  51. Thanks John and everyone who responds. The lift is so timely and the comments so precious; everyone. Thanks to the production team.

  52. Thank you for this great "up lift!"

  53. Thank you for a wonderful lift

  54. Thanks, John. I needed to hear that today with three appointments and the preparations for them.
I love the concept of the eternal noon and will hold that in thought all day!!!!

  55. Thank you John for the wonderful message of living in the now. Stewing over yesterday or worrying about tomorrow prevents us from seeing God's day of infinite blessings. Thanks to all of the commentators also. Really enjoyed Nela's thoughts.

  56. Thank you John, and all the lecturers who have shared this idea with us.
NOW -- eternal Life = right off the time line

  57. "Now is the only here and forever........" just limitless good unfolding. More food for thought. Thank you, John. So good to hear from Estelle and Janell too.

  58. You have blest the world with this message of Truth. Thank you!

  59. I love this lift and I do love John Tyler's deep understanding of God's Truth so much.
As a ps how does one get the artist and the music from today's lift?

  60. thank you John. I love this most inspiring lift.

  61. Thanks! I was just working on this element of time, the error of it.
    Cheers---

  62. Thank you for this wonderful "Daily Lift". It reminded me of Eddy's statement in "Unity of Good" (pp. 11-12): "Jesus required neither cycles of time nor thought in order to mature fitness for perfection and its possibilities. He said that the kingdom of heaven is here, and is included in Mind". And in "Miscellany" (p. 270) she boldly declares: "The cycle of good obliterates the epicycle of evil."

In regard to "A treatment for every day" (thank you, Sylvie #46, for the reference), you may not find it in the 1883 Journals, but you can find it in a clarification by the Mary Baker Eddy Library at http://www.marybakereddylibrary.org/research/treatment.

  63. Thank you for this lovely article! I have been working on retrieving my NOW for a long time. I wondered what was interfering with my efforts. It came to me this morning. It was always this sense of urgency and especially now that I might be considered a person of years. It seems that people of years are no longer accepted on the grounds of their worthwhile qualities. Day after day we hear comments - seemingly compliments - but are not. "Oh, my, so you are really "blank " years old"? You are Amazing! Amazing what? That we're still able to walk and talk? "You do that so well - FOR YOUR AGE". It starts from the time we are born. "She is very bright for THREE YEARS OLD". So, what are they really saying, that because of my years I can just go nuts any moment, or lose my skills or die with my song still in me? I pledged in prayer this morning to engage my deepest and most sincere efforts to just let it all go; and let the wings of adventure unfold my hours and my days, safe in the arms of Divine Love, Divine Mind and its guidance. I receive your words this morning as confirmation to my prayer. Thank you so very much for sharing Mrs. Eddy's most beautiful words, standing upon the pillars of Christ Truth, spilling out in rainbows of poetic imagery.

  64. Beautiful!

  65. That is perfect...Thank you John and All...

  66. I love what Eleanor, Roade, England wrote yesterday about how spiritually leaning results in being close to the zenith...like "the eternal noon" that someone else mentioned above.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote: "We own no past, no future, only the reliable now." I love experiencing how reliable the "now" is for delving into projects with thoroughness, excellence, and with expectancy of good results. I don't need to rush through things, nor can a proper completion be delayed. Goodness simply isn't dependent on time. We're safe in our expression of good...reflecting God's activity which is harmless, progressive, constructive, inspired, graceful, etc. There really is no deadline, no horizon line on Life...it's right now and already forever. That's not a reason to procrastinate, but rather a reason to trust in today's full and right activity.

  67. Yes, Hans, this is so encouraging! Isn't time something we mostly take for granted and just don't think about too much - except if we don't have enough of it. But haven't we all experienced moments where it seems that there is no time, but only the eternal NOW ? The devil is in counting and in watching the cycles of all different kinds. It is so much more fun and so much more satisfying to just "count" the moments we have with God and with the ideas that flow from Him/Her and fill our thought - and our day! This gives real satisfaction. I think so anyway!
Thank you, Hans for this strong daily lift. :- )

  68. I went looking for "A treatment for every Day" mentioned above as by MBE and found an article in the April 2008 Journal by Michael Davis entitled "It says it is by Mary Baker Eddy, but is really?"

    Here it is:

We get around 100 questions each week in The Mary Baker Eddy Library's Research Room. Most of these are about Mrs. Eddy and the history of Christian Science, and some are about documents that claim to be by Mrs. Eddy or prominent early Christian Scientists.

Readers want to know if a document is truly by the person whose name is on it. Many of these articles/essays/letters have been passed around for years, and we're happy to share what we've found out about their authorship.

One of the most "famous" of these is an article titled "A Treatment for Every Day." It's generally presented as written by Mrs. Eddy and taken from an 1883 issue of the Journal. Usually not a week goes by without our getting questions about it. People often contact us after searching high and low in issues of the Journal from 1883. So here's some of what we've found:

In the form in which it usually circulates, "Treatment" (which begins, "Every time you declare you are perfect in God, there goes through the body a health-giving power ...") is a compilation of several distinct parts, taken from different sources. The first paragraphs, for example, are from an article by L. J. Nusbaum that was printed in the Journal in 1889 (not 1883!) and then reprinted as a "tract" (a short leaflet)..

  69. Yes John, "now is the only here", as you say.
I love the idea of time expressed in "The Scientific Statement of Being" by Mrs. Eddy where she states:
"All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation..."(p468). Infinite is not finite, is not matter, is not man bounded by time or circumstance. And later she states, "Spirit is the real and eternal..."(468), so again mortal time has no claim on immortal man; now is the eternity we know with God.

Thank you as always Daily Lift Team for your presentations, and thank you lifters all.

  70. Thank you!!

  71. Thank you so much John. I want to subscribe to "NOW", really today, though It is such a difficult step, and would be impossible to make, if I didn't know what Eddy affirms in Science and Health p.454, that "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way". I know that if I desire to know only the "NOW" I just have to follow Love which LEADS THE WAY. It is not only a beautiful idea but so simple to practice daily. Yes we can experience the eternity of NOW right now.
    Such incredible adventure ahead!

  72. Thanks John, Your 'lift' reminded me that Mrs Eddy writes on p 584 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 'Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded.'

  73. Bravo for this excellent lift Because we have no separate Mind of our own,we are therefore free from all limitation and restriction. This includes the false concept of time. Thanks John for this very inspiring lift and a thank you to lifter# 22

  74. I'm so grateful for today's lift John. So "timely".

  75. I once read, and I am inclined to believe it is true, that the most commonly used noun in the English language is the word "time." I tested myself one day and couldn't believe how often I used that word without giving it due consideration

  76. II very much appreciate this message and the assurance of the release from mortal measurements Very Helpful. Thank you.

  77. "BEHOLD, NOW IS THE ACCEPTED TIME; BEHOLD NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION" (II COR.6:2), THANK YOU SO MUCH JOHN FOR THIS REFRESHING LIFT!

  78. Thank you John for putting TIME in it's proper place. Sincere peace to all.

  79. Thank you so much, John! Anything that focuses my thought on the thought of there being NO TIME, only eternity, is wonderful for me!!

  80. Thank you, John.
The profundity of your explanation of time lies in its simplicity. I am so grateful for Mrs. Eddy and for you. To understand what has perplexed man for centuries--the concept of time--and to realize the emptiness of a manmade creation is to understand the limitless boundaries of divine Mind, divine Love.

  81. Oh,I love this lift.To the point, powerful, immediately freeing and delivered withn deep understanding and love.Thank you so much for your good work.

  82. Funny putting now in it all helps. If you substitute the word now where time usually is its like breaking a mesmerism. Do you have the now? What now is it? Impossible to run out of now. How do you spend, save, enjoy now? Thanks John.

  83. How exciting John....living in the moment
    is sooo fulfilling!!!

  84. Excellent Lift. Thank you

  85. Thank you John for the important message of perfection NOW because we reflect God, who is timeless and eternal. I'm reminded of the Biblical passage in II Corinthians 6:( ..."behold, now is the accepted time; .behold now is the day of salvation.).

I'm also reminded of Mary Baker Eddy's statement in Science and Health, " P. 39:18-25. ""Now," cried the apostle, is the day of salvation," - meaning, not that now men must prepare for a future-world salvation, or safety, but that now is the time in which to experience that salvation in spirit and life. Now is the time for so-called material pains and material pleasures to pass away, for both are unreal, because impossible in Science."

This Biblical passage from John 4: 35 also comes to mind, " Say not ye, there are yet four months, and then cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest." These words were spoken by Jesus.

I'm so grateful for these truths from the Bible, the Science and Health, and for this wonderful Daily Lift, the Daily Lift team, and all of the contributions of those who have responded to this Daily Lift. It is all so inspiring and meaningful NOW.

  86. I can only echo the sentiments of #81 -- Oh, how I love this lift! So powerful, so great with understanding and freeing us to better understand. Thank you for all that you do. I am most grateful.

    Donalda Hammersmith, Milwaukee, WI

  87. Thanks so much John. So true, so helpful and so inspiring, also all the comments.

"Blessed be the Lord for evermore, A-men and A-men." Ps 89:52

To every one - have a blessed life in eternity.

  88. Eddy wrote in an article published in the Boston Herald, March 5, 1905 (My.p. 268) entitled: "Prevention and Cure of Divorce". In it she writes this: "This time-world flutters in my thought as an unreal shadow, and I can only solace the sore ills of mankind by a lively battle with 'the world, the flesh and the devil,' in which Love is the liberator and gives man the victory over himself." Love battles time for all the false episodes it presents as real to man. Love can only be incompatible to time. What a fantastic lift, John! Thank you.

  89. Sheer inspiration! Thank you so much!

  90. Thank you John,

What a lovely lift indeed. Time is so limiting in our lives...It causes exhaustion and limits us in our living in NOW... which loosens us physically and mentally to heal and do good and be Christlike Depending on time and
not freeing ourselves with the concept of time, shrouds us in less than noontide glory. So let us all just forget our time consuming activities which robs us of our truly important obligation of Healing the sick and just loving
    and seeing the real man.

  91. ----and, from hymn # 136: "Till time and space and fear are naught My quest shall never cease,
Thy presence ever goes with me And Thou dost give me peace.

  92. Thank you so much John for this thought provoking lift....."step out of a time world into Eternity where the only Now is Here...and Forever"! Concise and complete. Couldn't help but think of the film whose title had a similar word structure. It's synopsis indicates the writers were attempting to illustrate (albeit probably unintentionally) that now is the only reality.

  93. Merci beaucoup, John, for your great upLifting message --- much to think about/understand and practice/do!

  94. Thank you, John. What a fine lift! We live
in the eternal now. I needed this today.

  95. Just one more thing--what lovely music!
Is there an album? Thank you so much
    once again.

  96. The only cycle we have is the closer understanding of our AT-ONE-MENT with God. That's where eternity is. The movement of suns & planets can not change that. It is interesting that our mortal exceptance of time is based on the cycles of our earth around the sun. Well! what about the cycles of other planets around our sun? Does the amount of their cycles make our lives shorter or longer? The same question pertains to other solar systems. When one thinks about it in this context, then the whole idea of time becomes mis mashed, no time, just now, eternal. And that's where we really exist, in the eternal now of God's creation.

  97. now is the accepted time ......Thank you for letting us caech a glimpse of truth in the clock

  98. Thank you, John.

  99. Thank YOU, John. This sound like a lot of fun!

  100. Thank you verygratefully for the enlightening lift
