  1. What a wonderful thought. Thank you.

  2. Thank you John, what a great Lift. Our life,"hid with Christ in God" is constantly renewing itself, always new, always fresh, abounding with joy. Mary Baker Eddy talks about what appears to be our human history as a false sense of our identity. Like any false sense, through our spiritual understanding we find our freedom from the limitations these beliefs attempt to impose on us. A student of Mrs. Eddy's talked to her about a case he was dealing with that was not yielding to treatment. The patient had suffered wounds sustained during the Civil War. Mrs. Eddy said in essence that the man was including the experience of war as a part of his identity, his history. Talk about radical thinking! Needless to say healing resulted. I love the lessons of that story and I'm sorry I don't recall the source so I could acknowledge it. Thank you again.

  4. Thank you John for this reminder that we are not bounded.

  5. Thank you, John, for “‘This is the first day of the rest of your life’ … all that came before – I can forget it … Life is coming to me fresh every day … free from limitation of any kind … not tied to any place or time …”

To accept that “the slate is perpetually being wiped clean” as you describe, is to live in a constant state of forgiveness. Forgiveness proves the power of Love. I don’t need new people or even a “new me!” in my life, I need to know me, mine, and all, according to the Truth of our being – the way Love knows the beloved.

“The human history needs to be revised, and the material record expunged” (Ret 22:1) in full recognition that no physical law, mortal event, human circumstance or mere opinion is our “defining moment.”

“The admission to one's self that man is God's own likeness sets man free to master the infinite idea” and “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite to-day is big with blessings” and “Creation is ever appearing …” (S&H 90:24; vii:1; 507:28).

“Beloved children, the world has need of you, — and more as children than as men and women: it needs your innocence, unselfishness, faithful affection, uncontaminated lives. You need also to watch, and pray that you preserve these virtues unstained, and lose them not through contact with the world. What grander ambition is there than to maintain in yourselves what Jesus loved, and to know that your example, more than words, makes morals for mankind” (Mis 110:4).

  6. Thanks! really great!!

  7. Oh I loved that, John ! No past history, no baggage from yesterday, only going forward with new, fresh inspiration. "The freer step, the fuller breath, The wide horizon's grander view; the sense of Life that knows no death,---- the Life that maketh all things new" Hymn 218 Thank you John.

  8. My sister left my place today upset with me. I didn't know the reason exactly but after listening this daily lift I called her to apologize and express my interest in her feelings. The Christian Science helps me to accept me as good. If I label myself as a rude or arrogant person, I immediately deny those thoughts and I start thinking and acting as a good person and all the conflicts disappears.

  9. What a great way to begin anything, John, especially a new day and a new year. Thank you, John, and also Martin and Nela for your thoughtful comments, and all associated with bringing us a new lift each weekday.

  10. What a wonderful start to a new year. Thanks John - so uplifting and ties in with my resolution to accept no limitations!

  11. While so many people are spending the day resting, trying to get over the festivities of New Year's Eve, there is no rest for the Lift team! Gratitude to all, and especially, today, to John Tyler; one feels "washed clean" upon listening again and again to this keeper of a Lift.
All the best to the Lifters in the coming year, which is only a fiction invented by mortals; but we know God's "time", or eternity, knows no beginning or end.

  12. What a freeing lift!!!

If God is renewing us every moment! (2 Corinthians 4) it makes sense to say: Today is the first day of the rest of our lives!
We can turn a new page and try again, no regrets but counting the lessons learned!

The old song sung by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers make so much sense now, “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again”.

For first time it makes sense, all the worries and feelings of leaving things unfinished are gone. Now I can look at my life from outside: “the battle is not yours but God's” 2 Chronicles 20:15

  13. Thank you for elaborating on this often heard phrase. I happened to be reflecting on it written in another way, just yesterday. How appropriate for starting a New Year.....all month I have been purging my past....tearing out pages in 40 years worth of journaling.....a past that I am no longer tied to. I purged myself of books galore that I highly value but see that by putting them out into the world, I am no longer tied to them. They have served their purpose and now I need to focus on a new outlook. I am stepping into the place of the elder in our family. I find myself taking up the practice of getting all my things in order, not only to not burden my children in the future when I pass, but also to free my own self to open the door to a whole new chapter, a fresh new experience, not yet known by me. These are the human steps that I am taking and the spiritual aspect of that, you have stated so well. Thank you for this lovely New Year blessing. I am happy to be back on board with the daily lift community that shines great light on me. Happy New Year to all, a new year that is fresh and not bound by the past.

  14. "This is the day the Lord hath made; Be glad, give thanks, rejoice." (Hymnal 342)

  15. Thank you and the Lifters what a wonderful way to start our day every day.

  17. Many thanks John for this "Fresh new lift in life," "Free from limitation of any kind, and abundant with energy and inspiration." "Father, this most wondrous union/ We would prove in blest communion:/ Take Thy Truth, our bread from heaven,/ Drink the wine of inspiration,/ Rise in holy exaltation," (Christian Science Hymnal Supplement #437)

  18. Thank you John, a great time to remove the baggage of the past, what causes us to hang on to stuff? Is it fear that part of our identity will be lost? A new beginning Oxfam will gladly use our stuff to help people in need "the heart like a feather bed needs stirring"clean out time! Happy new and fresh year to everyone.

    Daily Lift Team:
Quote from Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896 by Mary Baker Eddy, page 127, line 31:
"The human heart, like a feather bed, needs often to be stirred, sometimes roughly, and given a variety of turns, else it grows hard and uncomfortable whereon to repose."

  19. John, Thank you.

  20. Thank you, John for the reminder that each day is new opportunity to live and demonstrate in the present moment. In Miscellany Mrs. Eddy writes “Faith in divine Love supplies the ever present help and now and gives the power to act in the present moment.” Happy New Tear!

  21. Gracias John por el mensaje que me habla de permanente renovación y gracias Elena y también a Martín por los inspirados comentarios sobre este tema y otros que para mí han sido fundamentales para comprender el mensaje en el idioma inglés.

  22. So much in this message that I found helpful. I realized that I must drop the past both good and bad. I had accepted that God's provisions for me today are lesser and inferior to the blessings of the past (husband, children, lots of friends) Loved hearing that god continues to create me and to shape my life in the image of goodness. Thank you for helping me to enter the new year on a very positive note free from limitations of time or place.

  23. Thank You, Only God's Ideas constitute any and all of Life, I am God's Ideas, and God's Ideas are my Life...

  24. thank you john

  25. Thanks so much....happy new year to All..!

  26. oh my goodness!! All I can say is Thank You!! Also if you haven't written an article expounding on this please do so. If you already have done so please let me know it's title and where I can find it. I am keeping this lift to hear over and over again. What a precious gift!

  27. Thank you John, for this wonderful Lift. It seems you have been keeping in perfect pace with me. Until more recently, the very thought of stepping away from whatever dream, or illusion I had manufactured as my life, was more precious to me than I can't think what! Now, after all that has been healed in the past some months, I can say with all honesty,"Here take it. I simply have no need of it!" Mind you, it's of no use to anyone else eitheer. It simply isn't real or true or part of anyone or any thing. It's not even the dream it would try to convince me is the reality. When I was going through Class someone typed an error, and said "It's a fogment of the imagination." And so it is! Let all the world rejoice!
Thank you Nate and the team; the BoL; and The Mother Church; and thanks anew to all our Daily Lift family a perfect child of God, each and every one.

  28. Thanks John,

Oh Life that makes all things new,... the thoughts of men, in gladness turn again ( Hymn 220.) What a way to start the new year!

  29. thank you John, somehow i knew that you would say exactly that to open your lift. Its wonderful and freeing...may i add that each minute is also the new "now"of every moment of our life.We live inthe NOW,not in the past or the future, only thenow existsfilled with Gods presence. There is no time in infinity.Thank you so much and also all the Daily Lift team and ALL the "lifters" comments.Love and peace and "God with you" forever.

  30. Thank you, John, and gratitude to the DL Team, Lifters, and for all the gifts of Church, new each day! New Year blessings all!

  31. Very good lift. I especially liked the three different steps in claiming this fresh day. Thank you

  32. Happy New year everyone and thanks so much, John, for reminding us that this is the first day of the rest of our lives. As hymn 445 so beautifully puts it: "I awake each morning to a brand new day, Singing Hallelujah! as I go on my way." I awoke this morning to a brand New Year singing "Hallelujah my God is here."

I have found a poem, "Here and now" by Kardyne Flad Steacy (Sentinel, July 21, 1997) very comforting and full of hope. The last two verses are:

    No past regrets
    Can hold you back,
    No future doubts
    Suggest a lack.

    Since God is All,
    Fear has no place;
    Right here and now
    Love fills all space.

How grateful and blessed I am to have Christian Science as my guiding light!

  33. after recently losing a dear friend at a premature age...this helped me to realize that her first day is the same as anyones first day.....thanks for sharing.

  34. Great thought! Thank you John :)

  35. Thank you John and all contributors to the DL for enlightening the first day of the rest of my life. May all of you be blessed by daily unfoldments.

  36. Thank you John for this wonderful Lift that covers all.
Also, thanks to Nela for inspiring and helpful comments and
    all the other comments.
    Gratitude and love to all.

  37. Yes! How Fresh! Thanks, John! I, too, as others have commented, woke this morning knowing that the purpose of my Life is to live out from the spiritual reality of God and Her Creation! The whole purpose of Life is to know God! (Thank you, C.S. Lesson on "God" this week!) I woke up really knowing this and also getting just a glimpse of how the whole world will soon be knowing God, too! I'm not afraid to talk to people, both strangers and friends, about God any more! What else is there? Is there any Other way to Live? God is Here and Always has been! Happy New Year of Ever-Present God as Love to All!

  38. Thank you, John. This fresh start is very helpful. Thanks also to all those who have added their inspiration.

  39. Thank you, John! This Lift supports the thought shared by a branch church friend recently: "Life is not sequential." I absolutely loved that statement, and this Lift elaborates on it for me!

Thanks also to Donna #12 and Margaret #24 for the thoughts about purging our lives of anything that is now unneeded. It's been a difficult process for me, but the thoughts shared here today have inspired me to begin again to let go of anything that is now "clutter" -- in my home and in my thinking!

    Happy new year to all!

  40. Thank you, John, for this great continuing! As Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health, "Immortal Mind feeds the body with supernal freshness and fairness, supplying it with beautiful images of thought" (p.248). Immortal Mind, divine Love, provides our freshness, fairness -- and newness -- every moment.

  41. Thank you, Thank you! Also thank you to all who have contributed. What a wonderful year this will be with this kind of thought beginning every day. The Christ Science - WOW! Good every day. God with us everyday.

  42. Thanks, John, for giving that title a spiritual "lift."

  43. A wonderful Lift, John.

32, Thank you, Heidi -- I have a brother who is close to passing right now. Your statement that your friend's first day is the same as everyone else's gives me the final comfort needed.

  44. I join all the others who express gratitude and joy for so many reasons!

  45. Thank you Hans -
your "First-Day-daily lift" is FIRST CLASS. I will have to listen to it more often - later when I will be back from church. It is quite an amazing statement: "first day of the rest of one's life". It sounds really lovely. Neverless: much good for the New Year! :-)

  46. MBE writes in S&H page 584; "Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded." Mortal Mind measures time as birth of anything to the growth then to it's death. That's the description of the false idea of time. The true idea of time is the first day, when a revealed idea of God's truth comes to thought, then new ideas are unfolded, that's the 2nd day, then the 3rd day and so on and so on, forever in the mortal realm until the true concept of Heaven comes to thought, then the mortal drops away and the true idea of the perfect child of God comes to fruition.

  47. Baptized by the New Year, what a concept!

  48. Thank you, John! We are encouraged to "expunge the material history," so thinking about life in this way is a perfect way to begin the New Year to accompany a deep gratitude for all the progress in our ongoing learning about who we REALLY are. Who isn't constantly looking for freshness, and what a good way to see it!

  49. Thank you John...great message to wake up to!

Donna Allen thank you for sharing exactly what I'm going through
right now a total and complete clean out in preparation for a fresh new Life in my senior years.

I am so grateful for all the "lifters" and you Lori for all the tidbits of Truth you share.

    Love is flowing.

  50. Thank you, John and all the comments, so inspiriting ( puts me in the Spirit ) I love the thought that each day we are renewed, the past is history and we can forgive ourselves for mistakes!. When animal magnetism tries to interfere with our progress from sense to Soul I had a thought to repeat two things before going to sleep. God is all-in-all and the" scientific statement of being.".

  51. Thank you, John, for your blessed Lift!

  52. This beautiful lift, John, could put me on a clear and positive path every single morning. Matter of fact, I think I will use it that way. :-) Thank you for providing such clear, insightful, comforting and beautifully spoken ideas throughout the year. Happy new year 2014 !

  53. Thanks John. This is a helpful message for today -- the first day of the rest of my life.
    Happy New Year everyone!

  54. Thank You.

  55. Continued Permanence or Continuous Change

Today is the first day of the new year, and perhaps many of us are thinking about our New Year's resolutions on how we want to change things in our lives. But, it all depends on your perspective.

There is a beautiful rapid running stream in Colorado where the water is always pure and fresh, fed by snow melt, various springs and the crystal-clear lakes above it. The water in the stream is continuously being replaced. Any debris is quickly swept away.

There is a small eddy near an outcrop of rock in this stream where a majestic rainbow trout makes his permanent home. Everything he needs passes right in front of him, yet amidst all the change and turmoil around him, he is safe and secure.

God never changes and His children are perfect and permanent. Which child are you and which child are you trying to change?

  56. This is a wonderful way to start the New Year. Thank you, John, for an inspiring Lift !

  57. Thanks, John, for focusing on a better sense of history, the "first" day-- free of false records. Could it be that this "first" day might be the "only" day, and that the "only" includes "past, present, and future" as one seamless day of being?

  58. Thank you so much John for reminding us that our life is in/with God. And that does not include human history, ours individually or collectively. Thank you also #2 for your example of healing of a Civil War veteran that came to Mrs. Eddy. Our history is with God's abundance, love, joy for us, right now, right here, today and always every moment as we begin anew in understanding.

    And thank you lifters all!

  59. Amen. Your lift, John, has elicited such wonderful responses. Thank you and thanks to all who share. Thanks Nate and your production team for putting these on every day.

  60. To start anew by getting rid of the past, both good and bad is a wonderful start for a new year. The bad isn't hard to toss although sometimes it creeps back in saying "remember when this happened, so you need be sad and regret it". Stand porter and kick it out. I also find myself reliving good moments and wishing for a repeat. Now I can cherish what was good and move on. Besides cleaning out material things that I don't need, I need to clean out material thoughts that are interfering with my understanding of God and his spirituality.
Thank you John for an outstanding lift for this first day of a new day/year/eternity.Hugs of gratitude to our daily lift team for your work and to all the family of lifters for your sharing.

  61. Lovely Lift!

Thank you for this inspired and realistic perspective of Life!

  62. What a great Lift to begin the new year, the new day! Thank you, John. And thank you to all who added their wonderful, thoughtful comments.

  63. What a great way to start the New Year and every day, John. It truly is the “first day” of the rest of our lives. I’m reveling in the comments from familiar names that come across my computer each morning from around the world. You are all with me here in my kitchen, bringing me inspiration that I can carry with me through the day. I’m learning something new each day from all of you and I am so grateful. Thank you, Nela. Donna, I’m doing the same thing, cleaning out the past. Margaret, thank you, of course it is of no use to anyone else either! Lori, the poem is perfect. I’ll look up the rest of it. But I am especially joyful with this lift from John today and his special context.
    Happy New Year Everyone!

  64. Thank you for helping me get rid of unecessary baggage, mental and physical...wonderful start for the New Year.Happy New Year to all!!

  65. Thank you John, so much. This lift is very special to me, as I have a tendency to ruminate over the past, whether my decisions, or things out of my control. Your lift is telling me I can start fresh, that I don't have to be a victim of past failures. And thank you everyone for your inspiring comments - Happy & Blessed New Year to you all. So grateful for God, Christ Jesus, Mary Baker Eddy, and this DL program - straight from Love!

  66. Thanks so much for this helpful lift. My last year has seemed to have been one of multiple, continuous challenges. I was thinking that I was so happy the year would soon end and I would be able to start a new one. Now I realize that each moment I had the ability to start afresh, and could remove all the "bad" history. I will concentrate on Joy and Harmony and dispose of all the negativity. Much love to the Daily lift team, presenters and lifters.

  69. The first day of my eternal Life with God...wonderful, fresh, clear, joyful and holy.
    Thank you John and all.

  70. You bet this is the first day for the rest of my life and I gladly accept it. One can't go forward by looking back. We learn from our mistakes and positive experiences and gratefully move on. You lifters from all over the world have kept me on a mental high, thank you. Hallelujah, God is so wonderfully being expressed.

  71. Thank you!!

  72. Right on the money, John. And we don't have to keep repeating errors since we have no material history.

  73. Thank you John for this fabulous Lift! So apropos, and so true! I don't have room to express my gratitude for all of the wonderful comments by our family of lifters around the globe - Wow! My heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you!
    Judith from Reno NV USA

  74. What a wonderful message! Thank you, John! I love Mary Baker Eddy's pithy statement on the subject, found in her collection of writings, The First Church of Christ Scientist and Miscellany, page 12: "We own no past, no future, we possess only now." The eternal now. An idea worth pondering!

  75. Thank you John for a terrific lift. What a great way to start the New Year!!!
    Marianne, Moeriken, Switzerland

  76. I was thinking a lot about the words "forgive" and "forget". The former = to completely and utterly forfeit the stance you have taken; the latter = to completely and utterly un-grasp the memory.

  77. BF

Thank you for a gentle reminder of the protection that comes in reflecting divine Principle, Mind, Soul, Life, Love, Spirit, Truth to guide us in making choices that keep us in harmony with our heavenly Father's plan for each idea of His creation. May we please God, our Creator, & the days ahead be filled with inspiration of following His loving, protecting & rewarding guidance.

  78. Thanks, to #54 Michael, for the "trout in an eddy" image, as well as to John Tyler and other Lifters.

  79. Thank you so much dear John. Time to begin anew, free from past mistakes and successes. Today we are a little baby opening our eyes and learn with fresh eyes from scratch everything from the perspective of good, God. What a wonderful way to begin this new year!

  80. This is great. My inalienable possession comes from God, not from a piece of heirloom furniture that was sold. It's Life, Truth, and Love. I reflect the divine action whom I give credence to, Spirit. Light is new each and every moment, not recycled like water in a fountain. Misunderstanding can be paraded as truth and can be said to be a part of a mans past. This can only cloud the Divine Being and character and call the material real. That's why, John, You are spot on at what you said and what Eddy said,"to-day is big with blessings." (S&H p.vii:1-2)

  81. “The past was past; whatever it had been it was no more at hand. Meanwhile the trees were just as green as before; the birds sang and the sun shone as clearly now as ever.” - Thomas Hardy, Tess of the D'Urbervilles

  82. A perfect thought to begin a new year. Thank you.

  83. What a great lift and fantastic for the "new" thought this New Year's Day and EVERYday. Thank you. I typed up the 3 ideas from the lift for a friend, and thought someone else may like to read/share it too. These are John's words:
"This is the first day of the rest of your life" ...
    1. All that stuff that seemed to be my life, all that came before -- I can forget it. This, as they say, is history. And a false history of that. It is totally irrelevant to my real life. All my successes and my total failures of the that past life, all meaningless!
    2. Here in my real life, the life that is coming fresh to me every day, the life that has its origin in God, in infinite good the creator of all -- and that creator is continuing to create me, to shape my life in the image of goodness,
    3. This fresh new life coming to me today, I can see is free from limitation of any kind, it is abundant in energy, in originality, in inspiration, not tied to any place or time,
Now, I can run with joy into this -- the first day of the rest of my life.

  84. This reminds me of Alice in Wonderland's bunny's celebration of "happy unbirth-days" :-) Thank you, john, for this very practical illustration of our right to being renewed every day, of being eternal.

  85. Let freedom ring/bring in the New Year and God's fresh original ideas of us every New Day! Thanks, John for this very upLifting message! A friend once explained to me the "healing power of scientific forgetting" and "growing" by remembering/understanding our "original innocence." Wonderful Lifter comments and mercy beaucoup, DL team!

  86. Thanks, John: Yes, let's drop old baggage so our "hands" are free to receive the good that is ours because we are God's sons and daughters!

  87. Thanks, John, for the 3 ideas. Thank you, thank you, Donna 13. Exactly what I'm dealing with, especiallly "books galore"--knowing they have served their purpose and I no longer need them--such a burden lifted, without regret. I'm ready to focus on that "fresh new experience, not yet known by me." Happy New Year, indeed!

  88. Hi John,
It was interesting to see how many times you use the word "Total" in your lift. The ad you referred to was: "Today is the first day in the rest of your life, start it out with Total" a breakfast cereal. But in a material sense, the ad was right. Whether it is a new day, a new year or a new adventure, we should be fed spiritually before starting out.

There's an old saying, "If it isn't done metaphysically, it isn't done." Preparing and coordinating with Christ before we begin anything is the best time to lay our spiritual foundation and groundwork.

There were other parallels too. You spoke about being totally joyful and that failures of the past were totally irrelevant, totally meaningless. Well, Total means Complete or Finished, over and done with. So when we start out by being totally prepared, totally honest, totally reliant, etc., this is not simply preparation, but the final completion, the accomplishment of the task at hand.

Our assured success is complete at the onset.

Mrs. Eddy reinforces this concept when comparing the gratitude of Morning Meal with the solemnity of the Last Supper, "This spiritual meeting with our Lord in the dawn of a new light is the morning meal which Christian Scientists commemorate." (35:10-12).

So this "First Day" is actually the Only Day, the continuous, unchanging, ever present perfection of the Christ. It doesn't get more Total than that. It is not a start, but a continuing and ongoing demonstration, already complete.

  89. every minute is renewal. an awesome thought. no struggle just attentiveness.

  90. I love your lift John! What a wonderful way to usher in the new year with a fresh sense of truth and expectancy of good.

1 Corinthians 13:5 (KJV)"...it (Love) keeps no record of wrongs." And what would be the point of recording errors? So they can be granted a false reality all over again?

The Greek word "metanoia" became translated as "repentance" which had the connotation of regret and sorrow for what one had done as opposed to a more accurate definition of a change of mind that leads to a change of actions, which is how we view repentance as Christian Scientists.
    (Reference Study Light at http://www.studylight.org/lex/tsn/view.cgi?n=73)

“Spirit and matter no more commingle than light and darkness. When one appears, the other disappears.” SH 281:4
“Closed to error, it is open to Truth, and vice versa” (SH 15:3)

It's so comforting to know that each day, hour and minute we can start afresh, allowing spiritual understanding to unfold!

Also, I wanted to say because goodness is the only true substance and is God's ongoing creation, there never really is any throwing away of goodness. However, goodness has its infinite manifestation, which is why the freshness or newness never ends.

  91. John, this is like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Thank you!

  92. Absolutely fantastic lift!!!!! And the comments were so thoughtful and supportive. I truly felt like sunshine was bathing me in warmth and love and any dark past thoughts were gone!!!! What a wonderful way to start the New Year. Thanks to all and much love!

  93. What a freeing message! I missed this yesterday and am so grateful I went back to listen to it today. No one has ever said to me that my past is irrelevant to my real life and I can forget it. I suppose the truths were always there, I just never put it together. Thank you John Tyler. You have just made my day, - and probably my tomorrow, too!

  94. Joyous way to greet the year!

  95. Perfect! Thank you!

  96. What Joy for the rest of my Life
thank You! wow! Think about it.[Truth]

  97. Thank you so much for sharing.
What a beautiful and powerful way to live in present, our real life!

  98. Very inspiring ! Thank u ... :-)

  99. I've just come back from our largest island Ruegen where I spent a few wonderful days, every one was the first of the rest of my life and each one was so enjoyable and so new to me.
Thank you, Hans for this wonderful lift.
    Have a blessed new year!

  100. Thank you for your wonderful lift today.

  101. Thank you.

  102. That was as wonderful as it was inspiring! Thank you!
