10/26: Love casts out fear

10/26: Love casts out fear

1. Thank you Shirley for being right on about FEAR! I was afraid to do my own spiritual work, thinking I wasnt good enough. But focusing on Love as the source of Good...eliminates the fear.

I remember one time, a Christian Science teacher, told me to watch every thought and go after the fear thoughts like a guard dog would. At that time, I had to tell her, " But I need a herd of guard dogs in my thinking."

Now, I realize, I dont need a herd of guard dogs, that go after fear thoughts, (False Evidence Appearing Real). I just have to have one, ALERT, dog that knows GOD. That is all that matters.

2. Such a nice analogy, Shirley, we all loved the movie, The Wizard of Oz. All it took was an innocent doggy to playfully pull away the curtain to reveal the hideaway the fake "wizard" was using to cheat people into obeying his orders. Once error is uncovered is delegated to nothingness, it loses the power to be feared. If the story were more serious the analogy could say something like, "the Lamb slays the wolf. Innocence and Truth overcome guilt and error "(S&H 567:31-1)

(CyS 567:32-2)

3. Great visual aid in thinking about the nothingness of fear and it is so easy to equate it to my everyday life. Thank you for this simple and yet effective analogy.

4. Thank you Shirley, for this great Lift. The articles, prayers, and periodicals are really getting to the effectual activity of the Christ in "rebuking and destroying error and bringing to light man's immortality." (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy page 589. What a great article in the CSSentinel editorial for 25 October 2010: "Each of us can Face Every Adversity Righteously." How much we gain in authority as we just keep affirming the Truth when in the middle of a seeming attack of fear. One can just see the fear dispelling right then and there. This is a really great Lift Shirley, and thank you again and again for it.

5. Thank you for helping me think about this! In order to be perfect Love, Love would have to be powerful, tender and kind, infinite and eternal! If Love were ever mean, or had boundaries and limits, it would have to quit being itself, which is not being very loving or perfect. So perfect Love must be invincible and must be lovingly giving us helpful messages and everything else we need. This makes me feel peaceful & comforted!

6. thanks for the loving reminder

7. Yay, Shirley! You gave us another reason to love that "innocent little Toto." I've never seen quite so clearly, as I do with your Wizard of Oz analogy, that fear's voice, whether booming or whispering, is always a FRAUD, because it always says the opposite of what Love would say, and Love is for real.

Hey, check this out:

8. "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! The Great and Powerful Oz has... oh..."

I think I'll enjoy that movie all the more now! Thanks, Shirley. :-)

9. Thank you Shirley for that inspiring lift against fear. Yes, there is no tribulation, when the cause for fear has [melted] been removed. "I fear no foe, with Thee [divine Love] at hand to bless;" (Christian Science Hymnla #8)

10. Forsake Error And Rejoice! was my answer from God when I prayed. Perfect Love DID cast out fear and I did rejoice.
Our God is an awesome God. Can we thank Him/Her enough?
Thank you, Shirley, for this splendid daily lift. Lorrie

11. Oh, did I ever need to hear this this morning! Thanks, Shirley, for the message about fraud! Better to love all day long than pay attention to such things, and you inspire me to do just that!

12. Hi Shirley,
I remember well learning that the Great Oz was the man behind the curtain and thinking how real and scary he appeared to be and how utterly "unscary" he really was. Thank you for this reminder~ that fear is exactly the same way when Love is understood as real. There's no place like Love, no thing like Love, and no other power but Love. Thank you for this daily lift.

13. Love the analogy!! I will chuckle over this all day - as well as take to heart the seriousness of the message, too.

14. Perfectly expressed! Thank you!

15. Thank You that was a very nice lift!

16. Terrific image. Thanks for the healing message.

17. Dear Daily Lifters,

How kind you are!!!! No one screamed what are you nuts about herds of dogs!!!! I just was in the shower when the dear Lord, said, " There are no herds of dogs....just packs of dogs." That Divine Mind who corrects and governs us all. I said, " UH-OH!" As I realized I had sent this to all the daily lifters of the WORLD!!!

So, be it "packs, flocks or herds"....it never matters....only God matters! And he is with us every moment, gently correcting the big and little boo-boos of the day....because he LOVES us!!!!

I am referring to #1's comment.

18. Thank you for this wonderful lift.

19. What a clear and inspiring analogy from a delightful movie. A very dedicated Christian Scientist once told me that "fear was ingratitude in advance." I have often thought of that, as expressing and deeply feeling gratitude is so very important. If I am truly being grateful, I cannot fear the false evidence that just appears real, but is fantasy. Thanks so much!

20. Thank you for that wonderful LIFT,and the coments to remember and appky the Truth.

21. Thank you for the inspiring lift. It really shows that no matter how much error screams for attention, Truth will expose it in a second as Toto, the dog did. And thank you no 10 for giving me another acronym for fear.
Thank you all and enjoy a fear free day.

22. A great reminder that "watching" doesn't have to be scary, or lonely. Thanks, Shirley!

23. Follow the yellow brick road! Follow the yellow brick road!
Thanks for the uplift Shirley. I will choose love today and not fear.

24. Perfect for me this morning as I head out the door!!! Thanks so much!

25. Shirley - wow, that was just what I needed to hear today! I've been challenged by fear lately and will have a new thought to combat it - Toto. How can you not just smile when you think of Toto and recognize the lie of fear for what it is - nothing! Big thanks. : )

26. I've been trying to work through (pray without fear) what I believe to be a serious financial situation for months and nothing positive appear to be happening. In fact, my search for work appear worse. I awoke before dawn this morning in a panic of fear, also with the thought that I must live as God intented me to and not die in this situation. I felt caged, pacing the floor uncontrollably. All that came to me to say was "Joy of the Lord is my strength" I repeated it enough to calm myself for a few more hours of rest. When I read this lift and the comments I was grateful for a fresh view on dispelling fear and gaining new hope. I know nothing will change until this fear is destroyed, uncovered. Like #1 once felt, I have days I feel I don't have what it takes to do my own spiritual works, but I will not stop trying.

27. Well done Shirley. You reminded me so clearly how "Perfect Love casts out fear" and we can trust in Love (God) because fear is a fraud. Toto had a job to do, for him and his friends, and he did it just like you. Now it's up to us to be Totos as we move forward and see our way home, from Love, through Love and to Love. Thanks for all of us.

28. Dear Shirley: Thanks so very much! Interesting that as many times as I have watched The Wizard of Oz, I remember that the Wizard was discovered as a fraud but I had missed the part that Toto pulled aside the curtain.......like reading a citation many, many times and then finding new inspiration. The analogy, like Jesus' parables, so simple and so true. Fear cannot stand since God, Love, is all.
Thanks again.

29. Thank you, Shirley, and thank you, Toto!
What a great analogy today. And since we all live in Love, God, fear just can't have a say.

30. Perfect! Thank you, Shirley! That certainly helps pop the bubble of fear! I know that in a time of need this idea will come right back to me. Thank you so much!

31. Thanks you for the delightful reminder of Toto pulling away the curtian and the wizzard saying, ..."don't mind that man behind the curtain, I am the great and powerful OZ", and of course his voice got smaller and softer as little Toto removed the curtain. Isn't that what divine Love does for us, it removes the curtain on error and fear and brings in the sunshine of pure Love and trust in our Father-Mother God. When we remove the curtain of fear we have taken of the mask and are free to enjoy all the good God is providing for us each and every day. Thanks again for this reminder.

32. I am so grateful for all of the comments thus far and would like to add how important they are. There are those who do not have sound connected to their computers and are unable to listen to these Lifts, but read and are inspired by the comments. So, please do not hesitate to add your thoughts as they might be just what someone needs at this moment.

33. Fear is a fraud. Got it. Thanks, Shirley!

34. Dear "Trying" (#26): Because of ever-present, omnipotent (all-powerful) God, the source of our being, we always have the tools with which to do our own spiritual work . . . with effective, successful results. Bless you for sticking with the work at hand . . . Divine Love is guiding you in this journey, and you can expect it to be free from fear and filled with hope. You are never alone . . . for, as it says in this week's Bible Lesson: "God is at once, the centre and circumference of being." --Science & Health, p. 203:31

35. A friend was on a walk with her young grandson last week when he expressed fear of all the Halloween displays in the neighborhood. She said to him, "you can't be afraid when you know they aren't real." Instantly she recognized this divine insight as a great treatment for all fears. When we begin by acknowledging God as All and as Truth, all the claims of scary things are clearly unreal and cannot touch us or move us. Divine Love essentially says "There really is nothing to be afraid of."

36. This is wonderful! Dorothy and her friends were mesmerized by the picture of fear -- a nothing projection. The innocence and Love of Toto exposed and brought down
the giant. Thank you. I've listened at least 5 times already.

37. Thank you Shirley. Fear is a fraud!

38. Thanks for reminding me how much I loved the whole message of the movie, "The Wizzard of OZ". My favorite visual for the elimination of belief that error's bullies are real is when Dorothy throws the pail of water on the bad witch and she simply melts down and nothing is left of her while we hear her say something like, "Oh, you destroyed my lovely evil"! I see the lack of anything real in the wet spot on the ground and know that putting love and it's power in place of a lie will show us the destruction that comes from trusting God's forces for good. #26, Never, Never, Never, Never, give up. It's the last "never" that has worked for me when fear threatens. The last "never" contains my certainty that I have nothing to fear but fear and love destroys it. Keep on keeping on. Love to all who fear. Sally

39. Hello #26 -- this might be helpful to you since it has always been for me. When one thinks of "trying" there is an indication of possible failure. Rather, when one is "relying," there is a fixed Principle behind it. We rely on the Word of God because it is faithful, just, and guaranteed! I wouldn't get on an airplane if the pilot declared he would "try" and fly the plane; we would expect the pilot to "rely" on aeronautical engineering. There are answers to every problem. We need to rely on this Truth as I know you are doing.

40. Dear #32 You can listen to the Daily Lift and hear all the great messages at any time of the day. Call this phone number 617 450-3430 and be Lifted. Have a day of good.

41. I love the idea of "relying" not "trying". I 'm going to use that today. Thank you for the wonderful image of little Toto! He wasn't going to be fooled. Let's just rip away that curtain and expose the lies for what they are which is NOTHING. I direct my prayers today to those in Haiti. Much love to you all.

42. Thank you for that wonderful lift. i know it will stay with me all day. Mrs. Eddy says "Perfect Love Casta Out Fear." There is a real healing message that I always apply to any discordant thoughts that try to creep in to my thinking. Thank you again. Vivian Lenzi

MODERATOR'S NOTE:
In page 410 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The Apostle John says: "There is no fear in Love, but perfect Love casteth out fear. . . . He that feareth is not made perfect in Love."

43. Hello Shirley and a big thank you for this super Lift!
What a wonderful way to expose the nothingness of fear by the image of little Toto pulling down the curtain to reveal its nature as a lie.
I'm lecturing on this subject tonight and found your ideas such a support for the ideas in my talk.
Have a Love filled day Shirley and all of you in our Daily Lift family!
Much Love,
Ginny

44. What a wonderful analogy! Thank you!

45. Shirley, I love how you took a Bible verse from 2000 years ago ("...perfect love casts out fear" 1 John 4: 18) and related it to a movie from 60 years ago - to make an original, relevant, helpful point in just under 2 minutes!

46. Wow! These are great concepts about flying and trying and relying on aeronautical principles. Principle removes fear. Thanks so much for the great ideas.

Looking for a job can be difficult. At one time, I was a single parent, looking for work and had two children. I took the first job I was offered and it didn't matter the hourly wage I earned. Gratitude always took the fear away. Each day I would focus on everything for which I could be grateful. Raises came with each new job I was led to take until I found a job appropriate to my education, etc. Looking back at that time, I realize the greatest gift was that I felt close to God, because I was leaning/relying on Him all the time. So find this opportunity in the midst of the difficulty and you will be blessed.

47. Thank you, Shirley, for this blessing.

48. Shirley: THanks so much for a really good Lift....Another obvious illustration is the
little boy who discovered that the "Emperor had no clothes". That was based upon a tale from long ago...Bob

49. Once, I looked up the word 'rely'. It said: "to rest with assurance on the certainty of facts." A slight corrrection, if I may: to rest with assurance on the certainty of SPIRITUAL facts! There you have it. A practitioner mentioned a few weeks ago that "he was a spiritual fact!" Thank you Shirley, and everyone who has shared their thoughts.

50. Thank you Shirley for this 'Gem of a Lift' so simple and yet so profound.

Many thanks also to all of our Daily Lifters who share such wonderful thoughts with the world family each weekday. Love to all.

51. How about for ALERT being Always
Love
Every
Right
Truth
I've always loved the Wizard of Oz with all the symbolism. Now I'll try
to be even more ALERT to Truth. Love to all of you working to know
what a fraud fear is.

52. This is a very nice visual for me. I will keep this vision close.
Thank you,
Cindi

53. Fear is a fraud. Love does not say evil things to the children of God. Perfect Love casts out fear because it makes plain that fear has no authorized power and says that fear is a liar. Fear is a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid is made more real by something that is not love. God did not create it nor does he condone it. The bully is unaware of his fraud because he doesn't know the law. This act, expression, omission, or concealment calculated to deceive another to his or her disadvantage is a misrepresentation or concealment with reference to some fact material to a transaction that is made with knowledge of its falsity or in reckless disregard of its truth or falsity and with the intent to deceive another and that is reasonably relied on by the other who is injured thereby. However, the law of divine love, which is a law of God, good says that it cares for the injured and heals it wounds by first allaying the fear and then removing whatever is offensive. The misrepresentative of evidence precludes references to some fact material and says that it is insubstantial evidence, thus casting it out of the court of law. God is the highest law in the land and gives us the stability and sustainability to continue on. I am a winner!!! Love casts out fear. :)

54. It is so true that when fear is eliminated from thought, prayer has the needed effect. I was involved in a traffic incident where I was cited as being at fault and the ticket was written up as two separate incidences, resulting in a very expensive fine. I prayed to know that only God was the judge and in control of every aspect of the case. I had to really love the policeman (as God's perfect child) who wrote the ticket and was not very cordial to me at the time. I needed also to be grateful that no one was injured. When I have prayed rightly, I feel calm about any outcome of a situation and not left with an unsettled feeling nagging at me. When I went to court, I really felt mentally comfortable and could sit an pray for all of us in attendance that day and expressed gratitude for the orderly way in which each case seemed to be handled. The judge asked me how I would plead. I answered that I didn't know how to plead because the ticket should only reflect one accident and not two. He called for the policeman to testify and since the policeman was not there, the case was dismissed.
Thanks to all you "lifters" for your sharing on this "fearless lift".

55. I don't think anyone has mentioned yet this acronym for fear: Forgetting Everything About Reality.

56. What a wonderful lift! And the comments, too. I have found acronyms helpful because they come so strongly into my thinking at the necessary moment.
False
Evidence
Appearing
Real
is one I've used and comments today have brought wonderful new ones.

19 said "fear is ingratitude in advance. I read once that "faith is gratitude in advance."

Dear #26,
You gave me something today. You said "work through" and seemed to equate it to "praying without fear." I like that thought and it immediately reminded me of Ps. 23 which says in part, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." It says WALK through. As you work fearlessly, walk fearlessly. Stop pacing. You don't get anywhere that way. Walk on through the valley. Practice gratitude in advance and since we know that "Divine Love always has met and will always meet every human need," (S & H 494:10) your cup is sure to run over.

57. Simple and great - simply great for all of us. To "Trying" #32, I have been through very deep financial waters, and the truths of Christian Science have always pulled me through. The same with finding new jobs. I have found great wisdom in Mrs. Eddy's helpful words on page 288 of Miscellaneous Writings: "Wisdom in human action begins with what is nearest right under the circumstances...."

58. Thank you, Shirley, for this good analogy to work with. I got another analogy, that I'd never thought to use from the movie, “Wizard of Oz”. When just a little girl, it was supposed to be the 1st colored movie, and my 2 older sisters took me with them to see it. What a disappointment it was! We said, “I thought there was supposed to be color!” But, there was enough interesting in the movie, so, of course, we didn't leave. Suddenly, well into the story (it seemed long enough for us) color is there! I've often remembered that, but your Lift made me realize it's like some Christian Science healings. Sometimes treatment doesn't at once produce as expected, but, most of us don't leave it. There's enough good to learn and spiritual growth we get by staying with it. Then at some point, there's healing! Your Lift will help me be more patient, more certain healing will come, and give me something to share with others who experience a delay. The movie is a classic. To many younger ones, who've seen nearly every movie except “oldies” in color, “Oz” might not seem all that different, except for the switch, but the sudden color when no other movie had it, could be likened to the healings when Mrs. Eddy began her movement. It reached each town with the same wonderful impact. Love will cast fear out; keep working with Love. I'll use this Lift a long time! Indonesia, Haiti, those of us in severe storms paths, or wherever is a need today, a Toto in thought is there to help.

59. Shirley, thank you for this unfolding of make believe fear thoughts have no power. We too need not listen to our own voices talking out loud or silently mimicking fear thoughts. Roger from Pateros

60. Dear All, I would like to share an experience I had where great fear needed to be "cast out" of thinking.....One night I felt a very strong pull to stop what I was doing and pray for a dangerous situation. I always obey that feeling as I see it as coming from God. I did not know what it was or who was involved but I began to pray. My first thoughts were to quickly remove my fearful thoughts because in God's kingdom, "all is well", so I needed to work on KNOWING that even more. As I prayed about this situation, I felt a calm feeling come over me and soon went on to something else. Much later that night, my niece and a friend came in and had a story to tell. They had been to a party on an island in the middle of a big lake, having taken boats to get there. It is now very late and dark and the only way back is to take a canoe. They paddle half way back, pitch black, the boat turns over, tossing them and all their things in the lake. They were very fearful and started trying to "get it together" to decide what to do and all of a sudden, my niece said she felt a "great calm" come over her and she did what she needed to do to get both she, her friend and canoe to the shore and even had her car keys because she said, "something told me to secure the bag with the car keys in it to the boat". We also saw that the moment I received my message from God to do some prayerful work, they were starting their trip home. God was always in control!! Thanks for a GREAT Lift, Shirley! Hugs to ALL

61. Perfect timing! I needed this message today.

Shirley, this healing thought is so beautifully expressed. Thank you.

62. Thanks Shirley, for the message and its strong delivery. Fear is a fraud, and it would betray us if it were actual. Since it lacks a source, it has no entity. If it isn't good, it's nothing.

At times, I have had to apply truths over and over (and am still doing so in some cases) but the lie must yield.

"Whoso hearkeneth unto me, shall dwell safely, and shall be guiet from fear of evil." Proverbs l: 33

63. Thank you so much Shirley for this great analogy. Having battled fear for much of my life I find these ideas so freeing, especially that Love is the voice we can trust. And everpresent Love is always here, always speaking to us. No matter what disguises fear may appear in it is nothing but a fraud, and it's nothingness is exposed and so destroyed.

A BIG thank you to the Board of Lectureship and to all the commenters - each Daily Lift is precious, unique, inspiring, spiritually nourishing and I am SO grateful.

64. Thank you Shirley for this lift and thank you for all the loving comments.

65. Thanks Shirley. I love the saying "There is nothing to fear but fear itself".
Since fear is bad and works evil we shoud be afraid to be afraid!!
I Love the Daily Lifts because they always calm any fears I might have at the time.

66. Dear JS from KY: I've always believed that Bambi was the first animated full colour movie, and I bawled my eyes out through the whole movie from beginning to end. Then came Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia and so it goes.
All of these movies were based on the premise that good must and does overcome evil: fear, a belief of the absence of good. We always knew they would turn out to have a happy ending, and the struggle along the way would always be rewarded.
God has always assured us that if we follow Him, our every need will be supplied, and lovingly, and far more abundantly than we could ever have believed possible. Actually depending on our gratitude for what we have already received!

67. Because, because, because....because of the wonderful things "He" does!

68. Thanks, Hello, for the idea of "relying" rather than "trying," reminding me that there is no "trying." And thank you, Shirley, for a great analogy!

69. loved your lift shirley and special thanks to nate and the board of lectureship that makes these lifts available to all! the lifts and the comments are always refreshing and inspirationational. the infinite love that is expressed here makes my heart fill with gratitude. i love you all and my "cup runneth over." i used to think that the "cup" was overflowing with blessings from God, or something that i needed from God, but today my
"cup runneth over" with love for the world and especially for you #26 and of course, this love comes from God!

70. Dear #26 Trying: In reading one of the older lifts, I read one from 9/20. The analgoy given was of a lock where the water rises to lift the boat to a higher level. The lock seals off everything behind it. A comment was that the water or Divine Love lifts us and we don't have to swim or push the boat. That same divine Love is lifting you and gently caring for you in every way. Special love to you, my friend.

71. Thank you, Shirley! The Wizard of Oz is a great analogy. Easy to relate!

72. Shirley, Thank you. I grew up not understanding what Love meant. The word love was to me used in human relationships only, and at times not in a good way. I was riddled by the fear of the unknown, and growing up in a Church that preached condemnation[Hell or Purgatory] made me more fearful, but notwithstanding I always felt[even as a very young child] a great warmth and compassion within, especially for the down trodden, growing up in Zululand South Africa, I would often feel impelled by this "Feeling" to share with others. This "Warm Feeling of a joy within" has been an absolute anchor through very turbulent human storms. I cannot explain in the human tongue my joy when I read The Bible and Science and Health many years later and discovered that God is Love, and the Feeling within of love and tenderness, obliterated any fear that had plagued me for many years. There is no fear in love;but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment[1'st John:18]Thank you Shirley, thank you Daily Lift Team.

73. I used to tell my son when he was growing up, 'Never say I can't, always say I'll try'. Now I can amend that to 'Never say I can't, always rely on God'. What a simple and effective treatment. Thank you #39 and thank you Shirley.

26 once when I was struggling like you, I was helped to know that the Bible says in Psalm 37: 'I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread'. Science and Health pg 563 reminds us that no matter what the frightening inventions of evil [the hydra headed monster, or the booming voice of a non-wizard] seem to be, we don't need to stand aghast. It is really nothing.

God comes through for His children always.

74. Thank you so much for this healing message.

75. Wow..the anology so clear and easy and the comments superb. My goodness, this provision is so wonderful. Excellent.Thank you to all.

76. I loved what you said! It really got me thinking. I've always been scare of fear and now I am not after what you just said! Thank You!

77. As Mrs. Eddy says "LOVE what a word!" To do as you did - call fear a "fraud" really reveals its nothingness. Thank you. Joyce

78. I really enjoyed your daily lift on Love casts out fear. I had always felt that that statement meant only that when a person is loving his mind is too full of goodness to fear and too full of interest in the welfare of others to fear. I had never considered that the love is God's love not OUR love that one of the ways it casts out fear is by letting us know that fear is a fraud because God loves us too much to make anything that we need to fear.
Thanks for that daily lift.
By the way, I am improving at releasing my own belief in fear in the classroom and seeing that other teachers can not be afraid.

79. Such a great message by Shirley, accompanied by very helpful, useful comments from DL readers. As I struggled with fear today, I found this DL, almost one year after if was recorded. It is still as fresh and helpful as can be.Fear is abating and I am finding strength. Thank you to all the lecturers and the DL staff who bring these wonderful, healing messages to us.
