Many thanks Lesley for this great reminder of the ever-presence of divine Love. Yes. "Self-forgetfulness, purity, and affection are constant prayers." (S&H 15:26). Dear Lesley,
Thank you for these positive words. As Michelle #1 said, I love the listening attitude you mentioned. I have been talking with a few close friends about prayer and one of them remarked how surprised they were to hear me say that I do not ask God for anything physical.
It is difficult for me to explain, but I used an analogy where I am not aware of a plant having to ask the attentive gardener for water or care, but they get it. The gardener already knows the needs of the plants when there is rain, dryness, wind, heat or cold. Why then wouldn't God, who has been at the helm of creation for many a year, be aware of our needs? Doesn't the loving Gardener already know the needs of those to whom He tends?
Some years ago I found myself without work and the fear of not finding work was initially high especially considering our rather tight job market and the manner in which my former boss treated me. Through it all, I never prayed to God for a job nor to get my old job back.
My prayer was to listen; to listen to God's Direction because I knew he was telling it to me, but my fears and anguish just were not allowing me to tune in to His Directing. For me, prayer is an opportunity to realign thought to God's Reality and away from mine. It is when we listen most.
I also did take the human footsteps and applied for jobs and even though the prospects looked very bleak I just applied. I found a job and discovered more of my individuality.
Thanks.

"Praying to God each morning
And listening for His plan
We'll hear His angel messages
Before we talk with man."
This is the first verse from a poem by Kardyne Flad Steacy (Sentinel, December 8, 1997) And the last verse is:
"Trusting God to guide us
In everything we do
With joy we'll start each morning
By knowing what is true"
This is how I start my morning prayers and trusting God to guide us everything we do throughout the day is unceasing prayer. We are listening to God for direction and then folllowing that guidance.

From this week's Bible Lesson on Reality, our Daily Thought: Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite. (Science and Health pg. 407)
Maintaining the perfect, divine model in thought -- the spiritual perspective of all we think, say and do -- is constant prayer. We are then in constant contact with our Father Mother God.
Mrs. Eddy has another way of putting this: "To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science".(My 160:5)
Our lives, lived spiritually, are prayers. Thank you, Lesley, Nate and BoL.

Terrific Lift. Awakened by your question "Is the Bible impractical?" I re-listened several times and jotted down the ways you list to pray without ceasing. In a hurry for practical answers to daily dilemmas, prayer can seem too passive. Being alert to that suggestion and understanding that listening is a key element to prayer; trusting in God's constant communication to us, we, as you said, "find harmony" "find clarity and direction each moment of the day." I love praying with our community of Lifters and knowing the good we can all expect.

(Don't see my comment. Had pc problems earlier.Re-submitting.) Thank you, Lesley, for “Pray without ceasing … always to pray and not to faint … How can I do that? … constant mental alertness …” How grateful I am that my mother taught me early on that we don’t need particular words or postures or positions to pray and be “heard” by or “hear” God. It has proved true. Formal, informal, spontaneous; with or without words; alone or not – I have recognized sincere prayer as a willingness to yield the human to the Divine – turning from limitation while turning to infinite possibilities. It’s like reverently going to or better yet staying at a sacred altar in consciousness with an expectation that God will lift up me, mine, and all for the highest good. In Science and Health (15, 4), I also have found inspiration and instruction from, “In order to pray aright, we must enter into the closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and silence the material senses. In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God's allness. We must resolve to take up the cross, and go forth with honest hearts to work and watch for wisdom, Truth, and Love. We must ‘pray without ceasing.’ Such prayer is answered, in so far as we put our desires into practice. The Master's injunction is, that we pray in secret and let our lives attest our sincerity.” and “The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer."

Prayer is not waiting to go to Church to ask God "To give me this, or give me that." True prayer is realizing what is true and false. When we see a discouraging news report on TV. To get upset over it, is not praying unceasingly, but taking it in. It never happened, because; 1) God good did not create, make or cause it to happen.
2) I needn't fear it, believe it, or give it any credence for God Good doesn't either. That's praying unceasingly. To be able to automatically know right from wrong. To be able to make correct successful decisions, and KNOW WHERE IT COMES FROM, GOD! Is praying unceasingly. To be humble and not mucho is praying unceasingly. Putting God first in every thing you do is praying unceasingly.

Thank you so much, Lesley. This praying without ceasing used to really bother me, resulting in some harsh thoughts to myself for being such a failure. Later, looking back, I could see those thoughts were all for good, more than they were critical, and improvement is always encouraging. I had visitors this weekend, and I don't have many because I only have one bed. They seemed to arrive with a deluge of stuff that I just don't give space to these days. Too much information! I felt overwhelmed, but prayed on. Gradually I could see that the medical, world, political topics had been replaced by fruitful talk about good things going on in our lives, and a brighter view of life in general. And with gratitude. Mrs Eddy says firmly that "the material does have to give way and be replaced by the spiritual" and this is what happened. And we all "went on our ways rejoicing!"
Thank you, Troy, for a great lesson. And Robert for "it's just as easy to breathe without ceasing as it is to pray without ceasing." I've tucked that one away. . .
Thank you Nate and the team; the BoL and lecturers; and the more than generous community of Lifters.

Thank you, Lesley. This helps me get ideas to compare. To stay connected to someone, I'd wake, dial a phone & talk. I'd use a remote with speaker, replace battery as needed, & reject call waiting. To leave, I'd need a cell phone. If I didn't have connection at any time, I'd go over what we talked about, and what I wanted to say or ask next time. It's like being with them, even if just thinking about it. They'd be last on my mind after turning phone off before sleep. Thinking of God, and what He tells us through thought, what Jesus told us, and explanations in S&H for Bible passages, is communing with divine Mind, who hears us, if not started by "Dear Father" (Isa.65:24). Lining up to think as His child is continuing this connection.
Another phone analogy: If it were God, and used all day talking to different people, the dial tone and dialing (conscious connection and prayer acknowledging oneness with Him) is using Him to connect with others. Every word said to others, & every act while holding the phone, is ongoing prayer with God. too.
If we goof, and don't reject un-God-like claims, we can handle it like disconnected calls, and dial back quick as we realize it. We connect with God (actually no phone is needed) by listening, thinking, and acting according to how we should live our moments, treat others, and share what we know, even offering to pray for those in need of any form of healing. Oh, don't take call waiting from error's sources! #13 Lori, & #25 AB, Thanks!

Praying is acknowledging that God is with us at all times, even when a church is not near: “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear” Is. 65:24
Knowing this Jesus said, “that men ought always to pray, and not to faint” Luke 18:1.
We must pray with a listening attitude along with a firm rejection of anything unlike God, Good.
This will help us find harmony, clarity, and direction each moment of the day.

We must ‘pray without ceasing.’ Such prayer is answered, in so far as we put our desires into practice. The Master's injunction is, that we pray in secret and let our lives attest our sincerity.” and “The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer."

- 9/19/2012Thank you. I was kicked so hard one time that I could not breathe, but I could still pray. So I was alright after a few moments. It is just as easy to pray without ceasing as it is to breathe without ceasing.

- 9/19/2012Thank you Lesley and all the lifters. I especially appreciate the thought of staying alert in prayer, being constantly conscious of God's presence and power. Another great analogy Troy #10; the plant doesn't ask the gardener to water it!
Thanks to all the Lifters and their helpful comments!

- 9/19/2012Prayer is not waiting to go to Church to ask God "To give me this, or give me that." True prayer is realizing what is true and false.

- 9/19/2012Thank you so much, Lesley.

- 9/19/2012Thank you, Lesley.

- 9/19/2012“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. "

- 9/20/2012Praying is acknowledging that God is with us at all times, even when a church is not near: “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear” Is. 65:24
Knowing this Jesus said, “that men ought always to pray, and not to faint” Luke 18:1.
We must pray with a listening attitude along with a firm rejection of anything unlike God, Good.
This will help us find harmony, clarity, and direction each moment of the day.
