9/19: Pray without ceasing

9/19: Pray without ceasing

  1. I was just working on this subject of praying without ceasing and your Lift appeared in my inbox! So good, Leslie. Love the listening attitude and mental alertness that allows us to be more effective in our constant prayers. Thank you so much. Your Lift lifted me.

  2. Thank you.

  3. Thank you Leslie. What a great lift!

  4. thank you leslie

  5. What perfect ideas on how to pray without ceasing. I feel better already now I can see how to fill this day; how simply to meet so many aggressive mental suggestions, from seemingly within and without but actually from nowhere. Thank you!

  6. Constant or consistent prayer does not include "time" lines; a recent Gospel healing of deafness
showed me the total nothingness of "matter" lore/belief; it was a wondrous experience for which
    I am forever grateful

  7. Many thanks Lesley for this great reminder of the ever-presence of divine Love. Yes. "Self-forgetfulness, purity, and affection are constant prayers." (S&H 15:26). "Thy thoughts our lives enfold,/ And free us from all fear;/ All strife is stilled, all grief consoled,/ For Thou art here." (Christian Science Hymnal #371).

  8. Thank you for giving us practical ways to stay close in thought to the Kingdom of Heaven and pray without ceasing too! I plan on using these ideas all day and every day and to watch for those thoughts that are not healing thoughts.

    Great ideas, Leslie!

  9. Thank you for this wonderful reminder to start our day with.

  10. Dear Lesley,

Thank you for these positive words. As Michelle #1 said, I love the listening attitude you mentioned. I have been talking with a few close friends about prayer and one of them remarked how surprised they were to hear me say that I do not ask God for anything physical.

It is difficult for me to explain, but I used an analogy where I am not aware of a plant having to ask the attentive gardener for water or care, but they get it. The gardener already knows the needs of the plants when there is rain, dryness, wind, heat or cold. Why then wouldn't God, who has been at the helm of creation for many a year, be aware of our needs? Doesn't the loving Gardener already know the needs of those to whom He tends?

Some years ago I found myself without work and the fear of not finding work was initially high especially considering our rather tight job market and the manner in which my former boss treated me. Through it all, I never prayed to God for a job nor to get my old job back.

My prayer was to listen; to listen to God's Direction because I knew he was telling it to me, but my fears and anguish just were not allowing me to tune in to His Directing. For me, prayer is an opportunity to realign thought to God's Reality and away from mine. It is when we listen most.

I also did take the human footsteps and applied for jobs and even though the prospects looked very bleak I just applied. I found a job and discovered more of my individuality.

    Thanks.

  11. Wonderful lift Lesley, thanks so much. This is a very timely lift. As a "New" practitioner, this command is very relivent. Daily prayer, listening for angel thoughts, and moving on those divine leadings is very much needed.
    Thanks for the reminder!

  12. THANK YOU!

  13. "Praying to God each morning
    And listening for His plan
    We'll hear His angel messages
    Before we talk with man."
This is the first verse from a poem by Kardyne Flad Steacy (Sentinel, December 8, 1997) And the last verse is:
    "Trusting God to guide us
    In everything we do
With joy we'll start each morning
    By knowing what is true"
This is how I start my morning prayers and trusting God to guide us everything we do throughout the day is unceasing prayer. We are listening to God for direction and then folllowing that guidance.

  14. Hi Leslie! Thanks for this lift! It says in Science and Health, "The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer.". Now, that's doable!

  15. From this week's Bible Lesson on Reality, our Daily Thought: Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite. (Science and Health pg. 407)

Maintaining the perfect, divine model in thought -- the spiritual perspective of all we think, say and do -- is constant prayer. We are then in constant contact with our Father Mother God.

Mrs. Eddy has another way of putting this: "To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science".(My 160:5)

Our lives, lived spiritually, are prayers. Thank you, Lesley, Nate and BoL.

  16. Thank you

  17. Thank you so much Lesley, your lift was perfect!

  18. Thank you with the inspiring comments and Scientific approach to keeping thought praying unselfishly and beneficially for the world. NYC

  19. That was beautiful. You have shown me how to pray without stopping!!!

  20. Thank you so much for today's lift, which did just that! After a discouraging situation yesterday at work, I'm realizing clarity and direction today.

  21. Thanks, Tony (#10) for that memorable metaphor of the plants relationship to the Good Gardener.

Lesley, your encouragement of this listening attitude is so helpful.

So grateful for the healing mission of these Lifts. They help me to pray without ceasing. Lois

  22. What a loving lift! You have explained clearly how we can "pray without ceasing"; and what joy will be ours as we do this. Prior to calling a practitioner for assistance, I would pause, and humbly pray to be receptive to God's, divine Mind's message. I will do this when I pray, too.
Thank you, Troy, for your thoughts given so lovingly. For many years, I attended services in the Christian Science church on your beautiful island while on vacation. I am so grateful for our dear members supporting church services all over the world.
    Mary Lou

  23. Excellent, Leslie. Such an important concept and explained so well.

    Thank you.

    Don Griffith

  24. Reading the bible yesterday evening; what Jesus said to his disciples when they failed to heal a case: Jesus mentioned that this kind goeth forth but by fasting and praying..; and I was wondering what has this case to do with our situation?... and now I understand, in some cases, one needs to persevere mentally to separate the gold from the dross... to be doers of the word ... thank you for this uplift.

  25. Thank you, Lesley..I've been deeply considering your lift since I listened to it early this morning. Right now, that "listening" or unceasing prayer reminds me of sunflowers always so instinctively turning and turning again with the light.
And #10, Troy, based on what you shared, I bet you would love this song..It is now a favorite of mine, too. http://time4thinkers.com/called-to-music-water-hymn/
    With Love, AB

  26. Lesley, what a perfect lift to start the day. thank you. AND thanks to everyone for sharing these lovely examples and thoughts.

  27. Wonderful help. Thank you Lesley

  28. Terrific Lift. Awakened by your question "Is the Bible impractical?" I re-listened several times and jotted down the ways you list to pray without ceasing. In a hurry for practical answers to daily dilemmas, prayer can seem too passive. Being alert to that suggestion and understanding that listening is a key element to prayer; trusting in God's constant communication to us, we, as you said, "find harmony" "find clarity and direction each moment of the day." I love praying with our community of Lifters and knowing the good we can all expect.

  29. Sometimes I like to do things first, and then read the instructions. Things go better when I listen for God's Instructions moment by moment and follow them as they come. This practice is becoming more natural, and I'm humbly grateful.

  30. (Don't see my comment. Had pc problems earlier.Re-submitting.) Thank you, Lesley, for “Pray without ceasing … always to pray and not to faint … How can I do that? … constant mental alertness …” How grateful I am that my mother taught me early on that we don’t need particular words or postures or positions to pray and be “heard” by or “hear” God. It has proved true. Formal, informal, spontaneous; with or without words; alone or not – I have recognized sincere prayer as a willingness to yield the human to the Divine – turning from limitation while turning to infinite possibilities. It’s like reverently going to or better yet staying at a sacred altar in consciousness with an expectation that God will lift up me, mine, and all for the highest good. In Science and Health (15, 4), I also have found inspiration and instruction from, “In order to pray aright, we must enter into the closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and silence the material senses. In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God's allness. We must resolve to take up the cross, and go forth with honest hearts to work and watch for wisdom, Truth, and Love. We must ‘pray without ceasing.’ Such prayer is answered, in so far as we put our desires into practice. The Master's injunction is, that we pray in secret and let our lives attest our sincerity.” and “The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer."

  31. THANK YOU. THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO START THE DAY AND EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO KEEP MY THOUGHTS UP FRONT. THANK YOU. VIRGINIA

  32. Thank you so much.

  33. Thank you. I was kicked so hard one time that I could not breathe, but I could still pray. So I was alright after a few moments. It is just as easy to pray without ceasing as it is to breathe without ceasing.

  34. Thank you Lesley and all the lifters. I especially appreciate the thought of staying alert in prayer, being constantly conscious of God's presence and power. Another great analogy Troy #10; the plant doesn't ask the gardener to water it!
Thanks to all the Lifters and their helpful comments!
    Judith from Reno

  35. Thank you.

  36. Prayer is not waiting to go to Church to ask God "To give me this, or give me that." True prayer is realizing what is true and false. When we see a discouraging news report on TV. To get upset over it, is not praying unceasingly, but taking it in. It never happened, because; 1) God good did not create, make or cause it to happen.
    2) I needn't fear it, believe it, or give it any credence for God Good doesn't either. That's praying unceasingly. To be able to automatically know right from wrong. To be able to make correct successful decisions, and KNOW WHERE IT COMES FROM, GOD! Is praying unceasingly. To be humble and not mucho is praying unceasingly. Putting God first in every thing you do is praying unceasingly.

  37. Thank you Lesley.

  38. Thank you Leslie.

  39. Thank you Leslie...utter peace to be in
    the listening mode...
TROY your metyfor w/plants is superb as I
    water mine each morning.!

  40. THANK YOU LESLEY

  41. Thank you Leslie. So very thankful for Mrs Eddy giving us this clear sightedness for a FUN life. It is FUN to think and do for others. It is FUN to be pure and kind. It is FUN to wave, kiss, and hug at others. So, we go out and have FUN everyday. We are blessed to have Christian Science.

  42. Great reminder....self-forgetfulness, purity, affection are my prayers for today. Thanks, Lesley, for an enlightening lift! Thanks also to all lifters for producing these lifts and to the thoughtful responders.

  43. What a blessed Lift. Thank you. It is so comforting to know how many of you are out there 'praying without ceasing.' Thank you, one and all.

  44. Thanks so much....I agree with Rosa!

  45. Thank you, Leslie. A very inspirational message that I shall listen to often. We all need to "pray without ceasing" as we strive for purity, love, and harmony in our world.

  46. Thank you, Leslie and Lori in California for the poem. I found it with jsh-online and shared it on Facebook. It is great how technology demonstrates the one Mind.

  47. Leslie, Thank you for your inspiring lift

  48. Thank you!!

  49. Dear Lesley - thanks so much for this important reminder of the need for constant prayer, and the ways to accomplish it. It's not a task, but a joy when we listen to Mind and reject the mortal counterfeits, thus improving moments one by one.

    love and gratitude to you,

  50. Great topic; great lift and great comments with great quotes! Thanks so much the blessings bestowed. Great praying!

  51. Thank you so much for this amazing and practical lift.

  52. Thank you Leslie for the helpful ideas about praying without ceasing. And thank you Troy #10. The paragraph with the analogy about the gardner was very helpful. (=

  53. Very helpful Lift. Thank you.

  54. I am so in love with this revelation!!! I recommend every child of God to listen to this!!!

  55. Thank you Leslie .

  56. Thank you so much, Lesley. This praying without ceasing used to really bother me, resulting in some harsh thoughts to myself for being such a failure. Later, looking back, I could see those thoughts were all for good, more than they were critical, and improvement is always encouraging. I had visitors this weekend, and I don't have many because I only have one bed. They seemed to arrive with a deluge of stuff that I just don't give space to these days. Too much information! I felt overwhelmed, but prayed on. Gradually I could see that the medical, world, political topics had been replaced by fruitful talk about good things going on in our lives, and a brighter view of life in general. And with gratitude. Mrs Eddy says firmly that "the material does have to give way and be replaced by the spiritual" and this is what happened. And we all "went on our ways rejoicing!"
Thank you, Troy, for a great lesson. And Robert for "it's just as easy to breathe without ceasing as it is to pray without ceasing." I've tucked that one away. . .
Thank you Nate and the team; the BoL and lecturers; and the more than generous community of Lifters.

  57. Yes, that kind of prayer is most certainly a possibility. Thank you!

  58. Thank you, Lesley. This helps me get ideas to compare. To stay connected to someone, I'd wake, dial a phone & talk. I'd use a remote with speaker, replace battery as needed, & reject call waiting. To leave, I'd need a cell phone. If I didn't have connection at any time, I'd go over what we talked about, and what I wanted to say or ask next time. It's like being with them, even if just thinking about it. They'd be last on my mind after turning phone off before sleep. Thinking of God, and what He tells us through thought, what Jesus told us, and explanations in S&H for Bible passages, is communing with divine Mind, who hears us, if not started by "Dear Father" (Isa.65:24). Lining up to think as His child is continuing this connection.

Another phone analogy: If it were God, and used all day talking to different people, the dial tone and dialing (conscious connection and prayer acknowledging oneness with Him) is using Him to connect with others. Every word said to others, & every act while holding the phone, is ongoing prayer with God. too.
If we goof, and don't reject un-God-like claims, we can handle it like disconnected calls, and dial back quick as we realize it. We connect with God (actually no phone is needed) by listening, thinking, and acting according to how we should live our moments, treat others, and share what we know, even offering to pray for those in need of any form of healing. Oh, don't take call waiting from error's sources! #13 Lori, & #25 AB, Thanks!

  59. Thank you, Lesley, and welcome to our community!

Thank you, #41, for the attitude of fun.

  60. Thanks, Leslie, for a wonderful lift today. I'm grateful for it because praying without ceasing has always been a goal; a challenging topic. Your words have given me a new perspective on the subject along with great and practical tips for practice.

  61. Ties in perfectly with the previous Lifts, sums them up.

  62. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. "

    Matt 7:7,8

  63. Thank you! This is a good answer to "I can't watch my thought every minute!"

  64. Thank you.An excellent reminder of what prayer really is!

  65. Thank you, Lesley for reminding me of constant prayer. Much appreciated.

  66. Praying is acknowledging that God is with us at all times, even when a church is not near: “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear” Is. 65:24
Knowing this Jesus said, “that men ought always to pray, and not to faint” Luke 18:1.
We must pray with a listening attitude along with a firm rejection of anything unlike God, Good.
This will help us find harmony, clarity, and direction each moment of the day.

  67. Thank you Lesley for the message today. I practice Yoga, and when I finish, I lay down and pray, giving thanks for my life, and everyone, and everything in it. I also give random prayers of thanks throughout the day; they can pop up anywhere! . Love to all the family.xx

  68. Thank you so much. I will take these ideas with me today. I especially love " self forgetfulness, purity and affection" being my constant prayer. How self less Mrs Eddy was and you too for your lovely thoughts.

  69. THANK YOU , SO MUCH !!!!

  70. My dear Lesley , i am very when i listining to your ideas.. is so hepful for us is a GOD INSPIRATION......

  71. Thank you leslie , yes once we the "Get" the idea to watch our thinking it does become easier to understand what Paul meant when he told us "To pray without ceasing" and it really does make life much simpler....we learn to be watchful, Standing porter at the door of thought" as Mrs Eddy so beautifully puts it! LOVE to ALL june uk

  72. Thank you for a beautiful Lift! Psalm 91 comes to mind - He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Healing, protection, harmony, heaven on earth.
