8/7: God establishes our work

8/7: God establishes our work

  1. Wonderful treatment for us and for the community! Thank you, Mary Alice. Grateful!

  2. Such a wealth of trust in that wonderful word: "Let" ...

  3. All ideas which benefit society comes from God and have all the power of God.
“And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it” PS 90:17
This Psalm is awakening us to the reality that God always hears us. MBE says, “Are we benefited by praying? Yes, the desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return unto us void” S&H 2:4

  4. Thank you, dear Mary Alice, for reminding me how to pray for my city - simply to really know in prayer that all ideas we need come from God for everybody - thank you so much!

  5. What a wonderful way to start each day.

My day is surely better for this sparkling start.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful ideas.

  6. Oh Thank You for this encouraging Lift. I love the Idea of ceaseless prayer and this goes right along with it.

  7. Amen! Thanks for a great Lift.

  8. Absolutley beautiful, so needed today and every day, a very share-able Lift.
    Thank you Mary Rose.
    Shelagh

  9. Thank you, yes we can always pray for others that thy are in God's care. When driving I know God is with every one and we all move in harmony with Love-God.

  10. Dear Alice Rose,

Oh, how we are all blessed with this wonderful Science that God has given to each and every one of use, that our beloved leader Mary Baker Eddy gave with so much humility.
This lady was showing all of us how to pray in the chapter "Prayer" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, in any situation.

What a wonderful gift, that has been given, to the whole world.

When one recieves a gift one needs to open it, and enjoy the experience.

We all need to get our hand on the handle of the door, open it, and recieve the majestic plan that God has for each and every one of us.

    Have a wonderful adventure.

    Love in Christ,

    Peter Reichl-Cunningham

  11. Inspiration and a wonderful lift to start the day - Thank you!

  12. This lift reminds me of a community project I was involved in years ago. At times, it felt like being out on a limb, with much heat (opposition) and little help, but every time I remembered that it was a right idea with all the provisions of Love, I was en-couraged to continue the work until its completion. A very useful lesson!

  13. Wow! I woke early this morning worrying about some challenging work my daughter needs take on today, and how I can best help her. I got up so that I could pray rather than worry. This quote from Psalms is perfect. I have to laugh because also in our day, there will be a crew of tree workers arriving to take down a huge oak tree. Thank you Mary Alice.

  14. What a wonderful insight that the work of God is going on around us continually. Thanks for that expansive view.

  15. I love these thoughts....Wouldn't it be great to make such thinking a habit!

  16. Thank you! I will be watching a crew with cranes remove a nitrogen tank from the yard of the plant where I work today, and I will be praying for everyone's safe performance of their jobs.

  17. Thanks Mary Alice. No matter how tall the tree, prayers are up to it!

  18. Mary Alice,

Absolutely beautiful. Imagine a tree climber saying a prayer before
Going up in the bucket! How many other people do the same? What a sweet reminder of our oneness with others.

  19. Dear Mary Alice,

Thank you for this Lift. The thought of putting prayer first before a task is ever so important.

Just last night I spoke with a friend about praying (as Mrs. Eddy states) "without ceasing" in terms of words, thoughts and actions.

Sometime ago I was in a very crowded place with two cameras around my neck. There were thousands of people around as I was busy taking photos. As I sat to have some lunch, a friend pointed out two people that were closely watching me. I would have to say that after my friend showed them to me, I could not help but see them and they actually stood very close to us, watching & closing in.

There was some fear as she repeated the thought that these people were up to no good. A third joined them and he walked right infront of me several times signalling to the others. They were also wearing the bold colours normally associated with a gang.

Suddently, like a beam of light busting through a deep and dark cloud, the thought of prayer came to mind. I mentally uplifted these young guys to see them as God's loving children. I began to think of my role as one to rebuke the error-filled picture and replace it with the divine - afterall they are God's children. A sense of safety took over. I also knew I had to be wise.

After eating I continued to photograph and never saw them again nor felt fearful. I obeyed the voice of Wisdom and put away one of the cameras.

God's work comes in so many different forms; we must be alert.

  20. At a time when we seem as a nation to be at cross purposes this message shows we can support God's work in our prayers and know that God's plan is always at work for the good of everyone.

  21. As my son heads out to a new job today, I found this Daily Lift to be so inspiring. Thank you, Mary Alice, for reminding me that we are always doing right activity when we know that God has established our work.

    Muchas gracias Mary

  23. I really love this - very powerful, and useful. Thank you!

  24. Thank you.

  25. Thank you so much, Mary-Alice, for the timely message of hope and salvation through turning not to matter but rather to God good as the source for the advancement of our work.

Just lately a group of Christian Science friends and myself are setting out to develop a large-scale, educational project on the Internet and some of the challenges we are experiencing and also anticipate further down the road seem quite daunting, at times even bordering on the impossible.

But at the same time, I am learning that it is not our task to advance a cause ourselves but rather allow God to be God and advance the cause for us. Surrendering all to the Christ empowers rather than diminishes, as counter-intuitive as that may seem.

The stirring and substantive Psalm you offer is greatly appreciated: Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us and establish thou the work of our hands upon it. Yea, the work of our hands, establish thou it.

I shall note down this moving and foundational quote in my spiritual journal and reflect upon it as a source of strength, assurance, protection and hope, as my group continues to advance a project in which some of the pieces of the puzzle remain unknown to us but known to the one God who is establishing the work of our hands upon us.

  26. Thank you very very much. Terrific lift.

  27. Recently, where I live, the local town fire-ladder-platform truck went up three stories to rescue a lady's cat who did not care to be rescued from the top of an ancient downtown tree. A crowd gathered to watch from below. God establishes the work of our hands. This short inspired podcast was purrrr-fect for me. Thanks for the lift from the Star-Spangled War of 1812 State of Maryland.

  28. Thank you for sharing about the language of prayer. As a counselor I pray on my way to the office and during our sessions that God's guidance will be heard and divine direction received. So grateful to be part of this worldwide community of Lifters first thing in the morning for it sets the tone of my day. These lifts remind me that God is our source and to be ever mindful of practicing the presence.

  29. Thank you Mary Alice. I absoutely needed this lift this morning. No matter how big or small the task, God has established it as done and as important to the whole of the day. Love your lifts.

  30. Thanks for pointing out the very best way to support the efforts of all accomplishing good in our communities. Truly a lift of love!

  31. Sometimes we think that we are the creators, the "doers" and the "owners" of our hands...thank you for reminding us to acknowledge the true and only source of all action--God. Jesus said " I can of mine own self do nothing" and did incredible "works" by yielding to the all-powerful Truth of the universe.

  32. Thank you very very much. Terrific lift.

  33. What an eye opener this is to be aware of the many opportunities we have to pray - thanks so much!

  34. Thank you all for your comments. Thought you might like to know, Maggie (#18), that there was no bucket!! It was just man hanging from a strap secured to the end of the crane. :-)

  35. Thanks Mary Alice, a sweet, very practical lift on this beautiful August day. Overwhelming project(s) ahead, PRAY with gratitude!

  36. Thanks for a great message! And, it went right along with the Sentinel article I just finished before sitting down to my computer. 8/6 Edition: "Soul's "infinite resources" page 27, From the Editors titled: "A Light in the Dark".
It begins with a quote from George Iles, "Hope is faith holding out its hand in the dark." And, I loved the side quote: "To Jesus, no conditions were hopeless, Rather they were opportunities to reveal God's goodness and care for each individual". (or for a job to be done)
    Have a beautiful day!!!!! :0)

  37. Thank you for this wonderful Lift, Mary Alice.
It reminds me of a lovely healing. I worked in an office and my supervisor constantly swore, in almost every sentence. I began praying on the drive to work, acknowledging that God's word was the only language I could listen to and hear. This passage was always in my thought:
"Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." S & H, page 261.
Months later another employee told me that the rest of the staff was surprised that our superior no longer swore. That habit had effortlessly dropped away from this intelligent person, with no human word spoken.
Our prayers have a wonderful, positive effect.

  38. Mary Alice, your lift today reminds me of an old spiritual that which begins, "Walk together children, don't you get weary..." Thank you for this beautiful thought.

  39. Beautiful, Mary Alice, and so practical for our everyday lives and for our communities! Unless the Science of Christianity is made practical in our Human lives, it has no way of being demonstrated and thus, being a true Science. I just love that about Christian Science and it's uniqueness! It shows us that Christianity has to have the Science behind it to be REAL Christianity! Let's continue our prayers for the Sikh Community in Madison, Wisconsin today! We, as practicing Christian Scientists have so much Good to share with our global community!

  40. Thanks, Mary Alice, for “God establishes our work…the man…took a moment to say a prayer…a perfect opportunity for me to offer a prayer myself in support of the work…all ideas, which benefit society come from God and have all the power of God, omnipotent good, behind them…” How inspiring! So, we can all be “on the job” by “rolling up our sleeves” spiritually and getting to work in support of all good work at home and around the world. Whether or not we’re physically involved and whether or not we’re bringing home a paycheck, we have the strength, purpose, and dignity of continuously putting forth our contribution to benefit society, in prayer. Whatever else we do, when we undertake such employment, we are, as Jesus was, about Our Father’s business and healing happens. “…the underived, the incomparable, the infinite All of good, the alone God, is Love.” (Miscellaneous Writings, 249) Love and loving more is always the answer. “…to offer a prayer…in support…” is Love employed. Thanks again, Mary Alice.

  41. Thank you for for this prayer, reminding us that we are ONE community in God, Good.

  42. I am so inspired by this prayer for our community. This one is right on on. Thank you Mary and all .

  43. Thanks for the inspireing lift, Mary Alice. As students of Christian Science, we are instructed to "pray without ceasing", this is part of our work! What a helpful and supportive though, that OUR WORK is ordered and controled by God, Divile Life, Truth, and, Love!
    Thanks for the reminder!

  44. I loved this Lift, and so appreciate the reminder to take every opportunity to pray for others who may be "out on a limb." Many thanks!

  45. What a great reminder to support all mankind in our efforts to work together for good.

    Thank you!

  46. That's building on the rock, Mary Alice! A solid foundation for our daily work and walk with God. Very grateful.

  47. This thought about prayer in today's Daily Lift has really touched me. I live in Salinas, California where we seem to have a great need in the entire community of 150,000 for prayer. I will put the ideas and thoughts of other contributors immediately to work for my community. Thank you all.

  48. Thank you so much, Mary Alice, for this consciousness-raising Lift taking us to a more elevated position. Every now and again, and more often than I would prefer, I have to clean / wash the plastic blinds on my back deck. Sometimes they look as though I live in a continual sandstorm! We aren't really supposed to climb steps or ladders, but I just pray to let the Christ go before me, and am rewarded with sparkling clean blinds. I remember reading of a woman who went to a shopping plaza every day to pray for an hour. It was a valuable lesson for me to be more generous with my prayers for unknown friends and all others.
Thank you Nate and the production crew; the BoL and lecturers (I listened to a great lecture this afternoon presented by Ricardo Salvidor - wonderful!); and the Daily Lift family.

  49. Thank you for your reminder to "watch and pray" as Mary Baker Eddy asks us to. Opportunities!

  50. Dear Mary Alice, Thank you , this lift relates to the daily prayer," Thy kingdom come, let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me and rule out of me all sin, and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind and govern them". Love to all!

    Daily Lift Team:
The Daily Prayer can be found in the Church Manual, Article VIII: Section 4, page 41, and was written by Mary Baker Eddy.

  51. Thank you.

  52. What a helpful lift, Mary Alice. Perfect to start my day. This is something I have been doing when watching real time Olympic events- I can't help it!

    Susie - Santa Fe

  53. Great wake up call! To pray for the safety and success of all who work for us or around us or for ourselves as work.

    Thank you Mary Alice.

  54. Just Yesterday, I read an article written in the CSJ about what the Sabbath day was, and I never realized that the Sabbath day as mentioned in the forth Commandment means seeing God's perfect creation every day 24/7, not just Sunday and God took a rest. That's our real work to do. And when we are faithful doing God's work, then all our human work is not in vain. Oh! Yes that article was found on the JHS ON-LINE web site if any one cares to read it. It's in one of the July 2012 issues.

    Daily Lift Team:
This may be the article mentioned above.
Commandment to heal by Victoria Jay in The Christian Science Journal - August 2012

  55. It is good to know that there are many people who rely on the divine presence for safety, harmony and success in their daily activities. Thank you Mary Alice for pointing out that we can support these prayers.
Thanks also to comment #37 Happy Dancer for sharing a good example of "right thinking".

  56. Love it We need to be better listeners. We always have work to do!

  57. Job 23:14 " For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me; and many such things are with him."
Thank you Mary Alice. We can stand back and watch God work today.

  58. What perfect timing! After having an important interview yesterday my short prayer was: "Father, I've done my work... establish Thou the work of our hands'!
A special thanks to you May Alice, the Daily Lift team & all the Lifter's comments!

  59. Beautiful Lift today. Thank you so much!

  60. Thank you, Mary Alice, for a firm assurance we're not on our own to try, fail, & try again. These Lifts are much what it would be if for centuries, recipes were handed down only by word of mouth, and in today's busy schedules, many cooks don't come up with consistent results, and often need to throw out a batch of food, it's turned out so badly. Then someone finds an ancient recipe scroll for those needing fresh directions and corrections to use in whatever best way fits their family needs. There will be variations adopted, but results will be tasty. The Bible, when looked at with prayer and study, gives enough directions to use for any problem. Today's metaphysical "recipe" strengthens remembrance and trust in God as All, so all work is established by him for us. No matter what any of us are involved with, this Lift is applicable to serve us. Ps. 34:8 says, "O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him." Ps.33 says, Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him (the Lord). For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood still." Nothing is waiting for us to adjust or fix, improve, invent, or struggle with, or rearrange. Faced with what seems an impossible situation with not enough space to maneuver things around, no time to do what's needed even if space were no obstacle, + summer heat, this Lift is one I'll be working with. I love it's promise. # 37 Happy dancer, what an inspiration! To all, Much good sharing, Thanks!

  61. Thank you.

  62. Establish is a wonderful word and shows up in precise places in the Bible
and Eddy's writings. Thanks for the focus on it today for our thought.

  63. THANK YOU SO MUCH~! NEEDED THAT ! LOVE TO ALL AND WILL BE PRAYING, ALL DAY.

  64. Thank you so much for this idea of expressing an expanding love.

  65. Thank you so much and thank you to all responders. [The 'first responders' in all situations!]
I am glad to be reminded that God does the work. For me, we are the witnesses to divine good.

  66. We can never really be OUT ON A LIMB, because God is out there with us, holding us
up...NEVER FEAR, LOVE IS ALWAYS HERE, supporting HIS TRUTH. Thank you ALL for
all the GOOD WORDS of SUPPORT for mankind.

  67. Thank you Mary Alice and all Lifters for the reminder to "pray without ceasing."

While I once thought this a ridiculous command, through the lens of Christian Science, I now see it as the natural outcome of keepping thought in tune with God, good. When I was bogged down with the former thinking, the idea came that, "Well, you have to think something...why not something true?" That correcting Christ, Truth took all the starch out of the thought that this was too demanding. II'm now doing a better job of controlling thought.

  68. We had an oak tree that was three stories high removed from our front yard. A happy-go-lucky Hispanic worker climbed fearlessly to the top of the tree with buzz saw in hand. He did have on a safety belt. He started from the top to cut down the oak, foot by foot. As each section of the tree was lowered to the ground by the workers on the ground, the tree would sway back and forth, but that did not seem to trouble the man on the top of the tree. We and a neighbor man were amazed at the fearlessness of this industrious worker. Fear struck out that day.

  69. thank you

  70. Beautiful and Thank you.
    Sent with Love,
    Kate

  71. A few years ago when driving in San Jose Ca., we were lost. We came upon a the most beautiful water fall and Temple. A man in a Turban invited us in to see the building. He was so helpful and loving. We had never heard of the Sikhs before, but were given a history of the faith. We will support in prayer the Sikhs in Wisconsin. Our daily prayer enriches man and governs. Thanks to all.

  72. Thank you Mary Alice, how we need this reminder "To pray without ceasing" which does at times seem to be a daunting task, but gradually we are able to see that it makes life easier than allowing error to control our thinking. Also 37 reminded me of a time when I travelled to the Sunday service by bus, and a gentleman of "mature years" also using the same means of getting (presumably) to his own church and carrying his Bible for all to see made the journey very uncomfortable for all those around him by his swearing almost every other word. As he boarded the bus quite a bit after I did and it had begun to fill up, I dreaded his sitting next to me, and yet I knew that it could happen one day! What would I do I asked God as I pictured the "event". "Why don't you try loving him" came the clear answer...."Loving him, how can I?" ( I had much yet to learn!) well I made an effort knowing that God had given me the answer, and guess what..as the bus approached the stop where he usually got on there he was and there was only one seat, you've guessed it Right beside me! I tried looking out of the window so I need not have to make any conversation, then I heard him speaking to some one behind him, and he wasn't using any swear words. As I turned around, so did he and gave me the most beautiful smile, I thought I'd never seen a more peaceful looking face, and we ended up having a lovely conversation about our gardens! MUCH LOVE TO ALLx (PS Never heard him swear again!)

  73. So good to become conscious of all good in society having its source in God and being established by Him. That is why the good work can succeed and be sustained.

  74. A great reminder Mary Alice---thank you! As an artist here, my statement of purpose set forth the basis for my work, namely, that God is the source for all inspiration, skill, and the good results that stem from this foundation. Mortal mind cannot do anything, nor can it possibly be the source of real inspiration. Once that is realized, and the true basis for the work is established, the results come easily and are truly inspiring for all to see. All the credit goes to God, who is my intelligence, life and all....

  75. 74, that was awesome!

  76. Thank you so much Mary Alice for the interesting message. So good!!!!!!!!!

  77. Thank you so much, #71 Marilyn! What a wonderful living example of the loving and spiritual nature of the Sikh religion! Yes! Indeed, God is no respector of person or religion - whether Jew, Gentile, Christian or Sikh! We are all One and Holy in His/Her eyes! Let us all come together and pray for our Sikh brothers nd sisters and worship together this One God of Love!

  78. Thank you for reminding us that, with God, we are never "hanging out on a limb!"

  79. Thank you, Mary Alice, for leading us to the
    King J

ames Bible ... Sometimes, it speaks best!

  80. Thank you so much Mary Alice! With love, Katharine

  81. Thank you, so much, Mary Alice. My lovely village is lovely because God is here. A wonderful reminder of why I am here. To bless, pray and work in God's vineyard.

  82. A wonderful reminder... thank you!

  83. What a great lift! Thanks to all who provides us with such inspiring work!

  84. Hi Robert #27. I smiled at your story of the cat rescue. At the school where I teach, a visiting fireman told us that, while firefighters always respond to calls to rescue cats, in fact, they do not need to. He said that cats can come down when they decide to. His proof was that no-one has ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree! Perhaps it is interesting for us not to assume fear in an animal?

  85. Tasks turned into work for God. That is a helpful message to take into my day. Thank you.

  86. I recently had the opportunity to volunteer with others at a food bank. It was such an uplifting experience and I was particularly impressed with the flow and harmony of the experience. There were 17 of us and without any comment we just went to work and if we took a short rest someone just filled in and when we went back we just went to where we were needed. It was a joyous experience. Reaching out with our prayers is so important. Thank you for your thoughts on this subject.

  87. Yes Thank you Mary Alice for your Daily Lift it was very good!! A good reminder for us all!! So I thank you for your Daily Lift Mary Alice!!

    Bruce
