8/22: Walking in the footsteps of Christ

8/22: Walking in the footsteps of Christ

  1. Thank you. I'll be listening up for that still small voice today.

  2. Thank you, John, for this healing and powerful lift. The word " humility" comes to my mind. Doing good, remaining unnoticed, and yet knowing I am with God who sees all completes and strengthens me.
    Love to all.....

  3. Thank you, John. A gentle but powerful message for us to heed. As with the "still small voice" we need to keep listening and going up higher.

  4. Gosh, that really hit the spot. Thank you, dear John, for that beautiful, quiet message to-day. With loving wishes.

  5. Nice. Thank you.

  6. Many thanks John for this great reminder that: "We must [all] operate unhampered... by the encumbrances and limitations of human reasoning as we advance in our understanding and proof of God's [Love's] lasting presence and power." "Thou gentle beam of living Love,/ And deathless Life!/ Truth infinite, — so far above/ All mortal strife," (MBE Christian Science Hymnal #23).

  7. As Jesus said, there's no destruction, just quiet and constant fulfillment . Thanks for this beautiful lift, John!

  8. Thank you John! Years ago you taught me about humility and flexibility. Today you teach me to quietly let my light shine. In conjunction with yesterday's lift about being the salt of the earth, I see that too much salt, too much speaking to be heard of men, makes our food and our ideas inedible, unheard. I will add just enough salt to my 'oil' to illuminate gently and do my best to walk without breaking any reeds. I will be a 'bridesmaid' waiting....I am deeply grateful!

  9. I am very grateful for this lift. It has changed my day. I seem to be having to deal with a 'multitude' of things. What lovely encouragement to let go, and be quiet while I am about 'my Father's business'.

  10. Prior to his three-year ministry, Jesus, whom Mary Baker Eddy described as "the most scientific man that ever trod the globe" was tempted three times, one time to use his spiritual power to gratify sensuality, even just a simple hunger, the second time to use spiritual power to perform spectacular events, and the third time to use spiritual power for self-glorification. To this, Jesus said, "Get thee hence, Satan,: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." (Matthew 4,) Apostle Paul writes, when referring to this second of the three temptations-spectacular events- "they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." (Galations 5.) Sheep will avoid and not drink from turbulent water, but only still water (Psalms 23, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the last page of her chapter called The Apocalypse in Science and Health, 587.) Thank you for this lift which reminded me that we are "How much better than sheep?" (Matthew 12, 12.)

  11. Thank You for such wonderful reminder of understanding who we really are!

  12. Thank you John for that illustration of Jesus and the flax. I have never thought of that before. I like the thought of Christ's gentleness and might in our daily life. He is our example. Ann K U.K.

  13. Thank you, John.

I felt the peace from your message.

p.s. Liked the more appropriate music used today to lead into your message rather than the country twang that is usually used

    Muchas gracias John

  15. Thank you.

  16. Thank you John.

  17. Gentle words, gentle voice, gentle Presence "-) Eternal gratitude John.

  18. Thank you for this very inspiring thought of who we are.

  19. Thank you for this wonderful "lift" and for the explanation of the bruised reed and smoking flax which I have often pondered but never quite understood. Also, thanks to #10 for his comments. I am so grateful for these Daily Lifts and the opportunity to share them with friends. Thank you to Nate and the entire staff for their good work!

  20. Wow! Such a deep understanding of the Christ Presence. Thank you, sweet John! Some of the imagery in the Bible used to describe God and the nature of Jesus as he walked the earth is so simple and natural, it reminds me a lot of the Eastern expressions in Buddhism or Hinduism. All of nature is a symbol of God's love to man. "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power"! In quietude and solitude shall be our strengh. "And underneath, a deep, settled calm." Sweetness and Joy to All!

  21. I love this reminder that doing good quietly and unnoticed - even un-thanked (!) - allows us to operate "unhampered by the encumbrances and limitations of human reasoning," as you so beautifully put it. This made me think of a passage by Mary Baker Eddy in her article entitled "Love" on p. 250 of Miscellaneous Writings. When I first discovered that passage, as a teenager, I couldn't figure out what on earth she meant by the "side door." But as an adult, that phrase has stood out as one of the most important in the passage - I think it's just what you're talking about in this Lift! "
"As a human quality, the glorious significance of affection is more than words: it is the tender, unselfish deed done in secret; the silent, ceaseless prayer; the self-forgetful heart that overflows; the veiled form stealing on an errand of mercy, out of a side door; the little feet tripping along the sidewalk; the gentle hand opening the door that turns toward want and woe, sickness and sorrow, and thus lighting the dark places of earth."

Thank you, John, for the reminder!

  22. So sweet. Going about our days like Jesus, doing good unnoticed. Loved that and thanks for the reed and flax. Always wondered what that meant.

  23. Ah, gems of insight. To see we have the power for BIG deeds <--&--> the precision for nimble, gentle nurturing. You 'lift our hearts in praise ...'

  24. The last page of The Apocalypse, is in Key to The Scriptures, page 578, not as above texted. The first 497 pages are Science and Health and is followed by Key to the Scriptures. Sorry for the mistake.
Robert, Brunswick, Maine U.S. of A.

  25. Thank you for this John.
Lots to think about here, and to realize it is true.

  26. Thank you for this gentle message.

  27. Fabulous message. Thanks!

  28. Very beautiful message... thank you!

  29. Thank you John! Such beautiful imagery to build my day and life around! "O gentle presence..." begins one of Mary Bakers poems, "Mother's Evening Prayer"... This gentle presence of the Christ, expressed by all of God's ideas, is our safe haven, where we are cared for, hidden, loved, sheltered and protected each moment of every day by the arms of divine Love. So grateful for this "Lift" today!

  30. thanks John - what a tender sweet message - and full of "stationary power" - thank you so much :)

  31. That was beautiful, gracious, and inspiring. Thank you so much.

  32. Thanks, John, for “Walking in the footsteps of Christ… the idea of God with all of its power… at times quieter than a soft summer breeze…” Love in action – just loving like the wind beneath the wings of a world that God so loved… being in but not of that world… living in unceasing prayer… “miracles” happening all the time without the Cecil B. DeMille theatrics… although that’s okay, too :-)

  33. I am still comprehending the depth of this message. It is powerful. I appreciate the lift and the wonderful comments that add depth to the message.

  34. Betty ------- I have gained a sense of the powerfulness of the gentle, quiet, ever present TRUTH! Thank you!

  35. Thank you for this lift.

  36. When we do things for others and expect mortal glorification for it, we are not walking in the footsteps of Christ, but still staying on a material plain of thought. We are not progressing. We have a harder time to demonstrate healing through spiritual means. But when we do unto others unselfishly expecting no mortal (Pat on the back) so to speak, then and only then are we walking in the footsteps of Christ. All good will always come to us when we humble ourselves doing good for the sole purpose of good.

  37. Thanks very much John for the pointed reminder that as we work daily to demonstrate the unfoldment of our being, our only responsibility is to "Express" not to "Impress"!

  38. Praying for that spiritual poise and balance that allow us to hear that Soul-filled message gives us the peace that brings strength to move joyfully and gracefully through our day. It was a lovely thought you shared, John--thank you!

  39. I, took, am struck by the wonderful imagery, and the counsel that human reasoning encumbers, and we can become unencumbered. Also I appreciated what # 8, 10 and 21 shared. Thank you, John, JD, Robert and Nancy.

  40. Thanks, John. So calming...so strengthening.

  41. I echo the comments above - this is a wonderful Lift. Thank you.

  42. thank you John: What marvelous light your message shines on our beautiful lesson this week. Carolyn, Estero

  43. Thank you, John.

Your inspired lift about following the example of our Lord, Christ Jesus, reminded me of James' explanation of how to determine divine wisdom: "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy." James 13:7

"Gentle...and easy to be entreated" --not harsh, nor difficult/complicated--far above the ways and means of the world.

In John 17: 15,16, Jesus prayed for his obedient "friends" (us!--I put that in because I love that from this week's bible lesson on Christ Jesus.): "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world."

Thanks again for the gentle reminder of the absolutely essential character of Christ Jesus we must emulate to be obedient and "...full of good fruits."

  44. Thank you John for this lovely message.

  45. Thank you for a beautiful and powerful lift!

  46. Thank you John, yes I will try and walk in God's footstep's.

  47. Thank you.

  48. Thanks for reminder to operate, live, move and be unhampered by limits of human reasoning ....operating, living, moving, being with Christ. Thanks everyone. I'm appreciating the range of music the DL team uses. thanks.

  49. "O tender loving Shepard, we long to follow to follow thee, to follow where thou leadest..." (Hymn# 245). In quietude and obedience the sheep follow their Shepard. John, thank you for this tender selfless message and instruction. It truly enables us as our Leader Mrs. Eddy tells us to lean on the " sustaining Infinite" and thus reap the day "big with blessings" (S&H page vii). Expression not impression.
Thanks to you John and all our fellow Lifters, Nate, and the ever inspiring Lecturers from the BOL.

  50. JoanP NJ
Thank you John, what an inspiring message of Christ, Truth, Life and Love. I am Blessed

  51. To hear your message first thing this morning was so at one with our lesson this week. I grew up loving Jesus and when I found Christian Science I learned why -- he expressed Christ, the son of God and taught us all our real selfhood in God which is the Christ. Thank you John,.

  52. This is a beautiful message and the warmth and love with which it is delivered is so appreciated. Doing good without the burden of having to have gratification or credit for it is the joy of life. Thank you so much John.

  53. Thank you for that wonderful reminder. Exactly what I needed to hear today!

  54. Another beauty John! Thanks! Gentleness is power when based in Truth and Love.

  55. What an eloquent and reverent description of the ways of quiet power and unnoticed good. This Lift has brought a new appreciation of Jesus’ tender teachings. Thank you.

  56. Thank you so much. For me, what you have shared is about learning the humility that tells us: God does it all, and all is good. To learn to know that Allness and listen to it and express it no matter what the senses tell us we see, or hear, or even do. Anything not of God, never was. I am so grateful for this lift and the responses.

  57. Gentleness, easily entreated, quiets the material senses of pain, and suffering- both physical and mental- and leaves us refreshed and ready to listen to Love's divine directing. How healing, how helpful, John. Many thanks!

  58. Thank you so much. The lift , the idea of walking with Christ...wonderful...Really helped me to stay One mind . :) we may go unnoticed but Christ's unhampered path is always progressive.. so true. Thanks to all for sharing .....

  59. What a priceless insight into Jesus's way of going about his Father's business each day! Thank you, John.

  60. And a quote from Rumi (a popular philosopher and scholar from the mid-thirteenth century) that seems to join hands so sweetly with this Lift: "If you are here unfaithfully with us, you're causing terrible damage. If you've opened your loving to God's love, you're helping people you don't know and have never seen."

    Shalom!

  61. Thank you John.

  62. Wow! This helped me to really feel what a privilege it is to go "under the radar." The freedom to move as God directs each day..."in secret paths apart."

    Golden!

  63. So gentle, yet intense and moving in its meaning. Now, oh now, to live it by walking in the footsteps of Christ. A peach of a Daily Lift! Thank you, John.

  64. Thanks a lot John for the important, helpful and very instructive message.

  65. Thank you for this elegant and quietly beautiful message!

  66. Thank you,John.Your quietly peaceful lift doles out a huge lesson on how best to reflect the Christ presence and power...sincere and genuine humility.A perfect addition to this weeks lesson.Gratitude to you and all responders.

  67. What a special, beautiful thought you expressed today, John! We must often remind ourselves of the need for quietness and gentleness in approaching challenges, which helps us stay spiritually receptive to God's direction, following in the "footsteps of Christ". This quality you so eloquently and touchingly described is spiritual grace. What a need there is today for us to withdraw from human reasoning, and hold quietly, fearlessly, with spiritual grace, to the loving, healing thoughts that can lift our thought out of any problem. Malcom Drummond, above, summed up, quoting Mrs. Eddy's hymn 23, just that quality, if we're truly walking in the footsteps of Christ: Be a "gentle beam of living Love".
Many thanks for your wonderfuly deep and meaningful thought. I will keep it close today.
    Much love to you and Maravic. Carp;

  68. Thanks John for the inspiration.

  69. So walking in the footsteps of Christ means having a wonderful model of reflecting power and at the same time being very careful.

  70. Thank you John Q., for your "we go unnoticed in our efforts for good". With God's power, good isn't fruitless. The Lift reminded me of a steep, rocky incline to get to a rented home by 4-wheel drive. Walking up, rocks of many centuries were exposed. It was awesome to realize some were on the surface when Christ Jesus walked another part of Earth. I still visualize the scene to remind me of keeping the continuity of doing his work. A poem/ hymn by Annie Johnston Flint, includes using feet to lead, and questions if we're walking where sins allurement is. The words alert me to remember my daily task. I may have shared this before. It was sung to the tune of CS Hymn 75, and fits this Lift. Not 100% metaphysical truth, but still useful.

Christ has no hands but our hands to do His work today
He has no feet but our feet to lead men in the way
He has no tongue but our tongue to tell men how He died
He has no help but our help to bring them to His side.

We are the only Bible the careless world will read,
    We are the sinner’s gospel; we are the scoffer’s creed;
    We are the Lord’s last message, given in word and deed;
What if the type is crooked? What if the print is blurred?

What if our hands are busy with other work than His?
What if our feet are walking where sin’s allurement is?
What if our tongue is speaking of things His lips would spurn?
How can we hope to help Him unless from Him we learn?

21 Nancy, Thanks! #36 Tobias, wisely said! Thanks to all above.

  71. Beautiful!

  72. I am eternally grateful to the follower of Christ who introduced me to Christian Science. Thank you for the daily lifts and the beautiful, thought provoking messages.

  73. Sublime. Thank you

  74. “A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench” Isaiah 42:3.
Yet reflecting Christ' power he healed and fed the multitude. Mark 6:33-44
Walking in the footsteps of Christ, we may go unnoticed in our efforts for good, thus we can operate unhampered by the encumbrances and limitations of human reasoning as we advance in our understanding and proof of God’s lasting presence and power.

  75. Not only am I grateful for this inspiring Lift but for many of the inspired comments. John 17: 15,16 is a fave!

  76. Thank you John! I could not listen to this DL yesterday and today I could fully enjoy it. I have also wondered many times about the bruised reed and the smoking flax and your explanation has helped me greatly. I thank also for all the comments that bring a new vision. Each one of us, walking silently and doing good without knowing... Nice thought to keep us in our way following Jesus footsteps!

  77. One of my favorite daily lifts ever. Thank you.

  78. "God-s prescence and power"... beautiful.

  79. Beautiful, helpful, so pertinent to our work. Thank you so much.

  80. WOW!! Your message uplifted and guided me to a higher inspiration this morning. Thanks so much.

  81. Wonderful. Midst the loud clanging and banging of human opinion, political rhetoric, economic fears and daily struggles, the simple message from the still, small voice of Truth, as Jesus demonstrated, calms the waves of worry. I many times need to turn on the "silencer headphones" to block out all of the static of material based, human voiced background noise, to tune in in to that voice, but it is there when I listen intently. Thank you.

  82. Thank you - i felt i had to listen to this healing lift again

  83. Dear John, I would like to echo comment number 17 - Gentle words, gentle voice, gentle Presence. So true. You really made us listen in your quietude. Thank you!

  84. As # 83 said, your gentle words, gentle voice expressing the gentle Presence leads us to the divine Peace and Joy and Power. Thank you dear friend, so very much, for this calming uplift. It is greatly appreciated. Much love to you.

  85. Beautiful!

  86. meekness and gentleness allows us to "operate unspent." I shall not worry as much about whether or not I'm being noticed, but rejoice inwardly that all is for the glory of God! thank you, John..
