7/30: Radical foot washing
July 30, 2012

Radical Acts, recommended in this podcast and sponsored by TMC Youth, is an ecumenical online community for people interested in following Jesus' toughest teachings together.

- 7/30/2012To see as God's loving child, someone who is hurting us or threatening to do it, might seem to be the hardest thing to do, it, but it works!
I had to put this to practice when as a young mother I was threatened with losing my little girl.
Ten years I fought in court -and with my highest sense of integrity. Those were probably the hardest times in my life, but also the time of my biggest spiritual growth. Christian Science taught me that true love is humbling.

- 7/30/2012Beautiful! Thank you for sharing this. Not just this man, but the world, is blessed by this act and this clear thinking. Bless you.

- 7/30/2012What powerful unfoldment and demonstration. Blest are the pure in heart: for they shall see the man of God's creating. Thank you for this lovely lift.

- 7/30/2012Wonderful, Christine. I have not thought of that implication of washing one another's feet spiritually "all over" as it were. When my daughter had a similiar situation whilst living abroad, I always have cherished the immocence and purity of the man & my daughter. Having nursed, I have come to see the necessity of cherishing one another both in this physical act as well as spiritual. Thank you.

- 7/30/2012This was truly a case of "love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you" Matt.5:44 Thank you

- 7/30/2012Wow! Christine that is the kind of healing thoughts and actions that the world needs right now.
Thank you so much.

- 7/30/2012God, Spirit, knows or discerns His universe and His children as they are; that is, spiritual, eternal, and perfect. If we could discern the universe in the same way that Spirit discerns it, then that would be spiritual discernment on our part; but we are not able to exercise spiritual discernment through the physical senses, nor ever shall be, "for the carnal mind is enmity against God." We may, however, exercise spiritual discernment in spite of the physical senses by reasoning from God as perfect cause to man as perfect, loved effect. See God's loved child.
Thank you, Christine.

- 7/30/2012Jesus overcame evil and ascended. We as Jesus' disciples must learn that the motive to escape from evil is not overcoming evil with good.
Malcolm Drummond, Henrietta NY
- 7/30/2012Many thanks Christine for this inspiring lift. Yes. "[We are all] of God's [Love's] creating, good, pure, unselfish, compassionate, spiritual." "Behold, they stand in robes of white/ Who out of tribulation came,/ With songs of joy upon their heads,/They praise His holy name./ O these are they whose hearts are pure,/ And free from sin or any stain,/ They stand before the throne of light,/ Their joy shall never wane." (Christian Science Hymnal #19).

- 7/30/2012Thank you very much, dear Christine, for this also for me as nurse new and really more extensive applicable view of the "footwhashing"!
Eleanor, Roade, England
- 7/30/2012Thank you for sharing this deeper interpretation of Jesus's act of kindness to his disciples, and also its wider application. I had not thought of Judas being included before, nor that Jesus would, of course, have foreseen the failure of the human mind to support the Christ idea, and yet he still loved. What a lesson. Thank you.
Glynn Lewis (UK)
- 7/30/2012Christine, thank you so much for this practical healing lesson, I loved the idea that you knew you were safe in God's care, but that you needed to love this man and acknowledge that he too shared in the Thank you again, Glynn

- 7/30/2012Thank you for this wonderful and inspiring Lift a great way to start this week.

- 7/30/2012This is a new aspect to Jesus' command to wash each other's feet, namely to wash away wrongs by seeing the true identity of our fellow man.
At one time I had started to consciously and steadily seek God's advice and support of what I was doing. During a cycling tour I was on a country road early in the morning. I had parked my bicycle at the roadside for a break on a field and a car stopped near my bicycle. A man got out and approached me. There was none around and there was virtually no traffic on that road. After a brief moment of extreme fear, all fear left me for God's presence. The man made advances and he smelled of alcohol. As Christine did, I spoke to him of my true identity and his true identity. He went back to his car and drove off. This practice of washing my thought had prepared me to wash this man's thought too.
In a Sentinel Chat on Building and rebuilding communities with love, Cindy Neely shares her concept of the “panoply of Love” (Science and Health, page 571): It is like an umbrella of Love which includes everyone.

- 7/30/2012So often I pray that I will be awake to the needs of others. That I will be shown what can help and bring comfort as the Master did. One desire of mine is that I see whether it is my will or the Fathers to bring about any comfort to others.

- 7/30/2012Thank you for sharing that wonderful message and example of Christly love that always sees the innocence of man.

- 7/30/2012Dear Christine,
Very loving and timely. To be able to "wash the feet" of enemies is indeed a radical act that heals. Elena that was a beautiful healing and I am glad you shared. Strong communication of love and determination. Renate also wonderful. I cannot tell you how often I have found myself in odd situations with my camera and no one else around; though God was there.
This morning as I went for my ride, I thought so much about God and His Power over all else. This Week's Bible Lesson lovingly affirms this truth but reminds us to walk with love. Being able to walk with Love gives us a sense of peace and calm. That sometimes means that we have to "wait on God" (S&H 326:10) as we persist through the seeming storm.
Thank you also to the DL Team for the reminder of the Time4Thinkers.com site.
Much Love to All.

- 7/30/2012Thank you, Christine! Amazing story of your ability to express God's Love to an abductor! I also feel, tho', that #20 Diane, makes a good point. We need to always be attuned to God's will for us and to listen and see what the right or radical action is in each situation. Sometimes we might get the instruction to protect ourselves first - learning how to defend ourselves may the lesson of the day. Each must proceed at their own level of wisdom and not take any foolish action if they do not truly have the spiritual understanding to follow thru with it. Also, I want to thank Malcom Drummond for his recent article in the Aug. 6 Sentinel! (I always want to call you "Henry Drummond" - the man who wrote "The Greatest Thing In The World" - because you have the same last name and live in Henrietta, NY!) Love to All!

- 7/30/2012Thank you so much, Christine, and remembering that Christ Jesus washed the feet of all present on that occasion, we must be prepared to wash the feet of all within our mental family, including oneself. So much appreciate each and every instance of healing through this Lift and the Comments.
Also really grateful for your contribution to the new medical textbook, "The Soul of Medicine: Spiritual Perspectives and Clinical Practice" edited by John R Peteet MD, and Michael N D'Ambra MD, from Spirituality in Medicine by Robin Hoagland CSB in the April 2012 CSJournal.
Thank you Nate and the production team; the Board of Lectureship and lecturers; and the Daily Lift family.

- 7/30/2012For years, I cleaned about 12 pairs of feet a day. Not all of the recipients were particularly grateful. But then some horses prefer not to have their feet handled at all.
I know from this daily activity, that there are some important aspects to cleaning others feet. How important it is to approach with assurance and clarity. Uncertainty is transparent. Horses hate to have their stability and freedom tampered with because some human wants to hold a foot. So, we must be efficient and not lingering, until they get the hang of it. We don’t lift the foot too high at first.
Are we so different? Our reflective nature provides us the most simple answers to lovingly help another. Jesus was quite clear to his disciples. - do it!
Christine, well done. Sometimes they think they want to kick us.. but NO NO, the Master knows better.

- 7/30/2012Christine, Thank you for a wonderful and expanded perspective on healing and the cleansing of thought and thanks also to #20, Diane, for sharing your prayerful words on giving.

- 7/30/2012Thank you. This is just what I needed. Last night at an RV pool, I had been swimming and came over where my husband was. A man was talking with him and looking at me in an uncomfortable, creepy way. As my husband and I were talking later, I commented on this. He agreed that the man made him unconfortable too. I will now focus on washing my thought of these thoughts and see the man as God sees him.

- 7/30/2012a favorite thing for me is to carefully wash my feet, like a pedicure treatment and prayerfully think of all the people I know and feel affection for. Whose feet would I wash and whose might I pass by...

- 7/30/2012To me, Jesus, washing the disciples feet, he was showing them an example of pure meekness. No man/woman was more or less important than another, but in God's eyes they are all equal.

- 7/30/2012Thanks Christine. When I think that Jesus chose this one act to leave with them as a reminder of all his teachings, it makes it all the more powerful. Also, he was getting them ready to deal with the persecution they might encounter in spreading the Gospel.

- 7/30/2012Foot Washing -- Has taken on a whole,bigger meaning.
Thanks Christine for showing how absolutely, compassionately, impartially Jesus became the loving servant,, to wash the feet of all ALL disciples, even though he knew how they would betray and leave him.
And thanks for sharing your own experience as an abducted college student. Thank you for your example of courageous mental "foot-washing," to clean your own thoughts first, and the result was to cleanse the abductor of drunkenness, and the intention to rape. He had a healing, and you were protectred.

- 7/30/2012Thanks, Christine, for “Radical foot washing…practice the radical acts of Christ Jesus... wash away the dust of a material view of man..." Foot washing as that "wash away" you've mentioned, is as if partaking in an ongoing spiritual baptism - choosing purity, again and again and again! The feet, standing so steadfastly too often on material views, once washed over with the Truth of being - materiality doesn't have "a leg to stand on. “...God, the divine Principle of Christian Science, is 'of purer eyes than to behold evil.' On this basis...endeavor to cast out the belief in sin or in aught besides God…'" (Science and Health, 299). No judgment. Just Love. Reminds me of what was told to me a while ago, as a true story. "A packed Christian Science Wednesday testimony meeting service. A young man, very dirty and with tattered clothing enters somewhat after the service begins. He looks for a seat at the back of the church. No one makes room for just one more, so he keeps walking up towards the front and sits down in the only place he finds available - the floor! The usher, an elderly man, very particular about everything, follows the young man down that same aisle. The congregation holds its collective breath, while the Reader goes silent. The elderly man reaches the place where the young man is sitting and sits down on the floor next to him. (Exhale.) The testimony meeting continues.” Now, that’s being “in service” to heal! Thanks again, Christine.

- 7/30/2012Thank you Christine. I love the fact that foot-washing goes both ways. Jesus allowed his feet to be washed, which takes as great a humility as washing others' feet. Faith, trust, and selflessness are only part of the deep spiritual qualities needed in the world today, but such an important part. thank you for the example you give to us.

- 7/30/2012I am always glad to be able to come to this site on Monday morning. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I am most grateful for the comments by no.20 Diane, and no.27 Bev. As someone who grew up in a confusing environment of alcoholism and violence, I never learned propriety nor proper boundaries, in other words, I wasn't taught to discern safe from unsafe people. Someone like me could find themselves in worse shape if I didn't use discernment, so yes, finding God's will for me, in each situation is extremely important.
Betty
- 7/30/2012Thank you for the lift, and all the shares. In a Bible class I was told that in Jesus time you washed your own feet. That even servants were not asked to do it. Does any one know any history about this? What Jesus did in washing feet,in telling the disciples what was going to happen to him, especially in telling Peter he was going to deny Jesus, was getting them ready to progress. He was not accusing Peter. He said to Peter that He had prayed for him and that when, not if, he was healed from the betrail he was to strengthen his brethern. It is so important to see the spiritual meaning of physical contact. Since Mary BE tells us that "matter is an error of statement" we must see its correction in Truth and never avoid touching matter and mortal thought. I have felt the profoundly loving touch of Christian Science nursing given to me. An adept horseman told of riding a nervous horse who was new to trails on a steep, rocky patch. He thought, I'll watch to see how to jump to safety if needed, and unconsciously shifted his weight in the saddle. The horse stopped cold and turned his head back to look at the rider, as if to say: I know what you just thought, you are planing to abandon me. The rider shifted his weight back and assured the horse they would do it together. The horse relaxed and confidently negociated the trail. Do we realize how profoundly that our touch can constantly tell others of the "Love that will no let me go" as an old hymn says? (A variation on hymn 232)

- 7/30/2012Thank you for helping me understand the magnitude of this humble act. I hadn't put together the part that Jesus washed Judas's feet as well as Peter's. He truly blessed all with his life. And putting the man at ease who was behind the wheel is also humbling and inspiring.

- 7/30/2012Thank you Christine for a thought provoking lift. The meekness and humility expressed in washing another's feet hit me as very practical for business negotiations as well. It helped me think of my work today in a new way.
I recently borrowed the Anthology of spiritual articles part 1 from the Reading room and one of the articles talks about Defense as an active word and how we need to actively defend ourselves daily. Protection, the author states can have fear attached to it, as though we are hoping God protects us versus knowing God protects us. We can understand that God protects us by knowing it is a strong, active defense as you expressed in that car. It really helped me to understand the difference and the strength of being confident in that every active, always present defense.

- 7/30/2012So I listened to and loved this lift, and I'm sitting in the Reading Room, and a man comes in asking for material. He'd gotten off a bus because he was sick and tired of the surveillance, someone was taking pictures, and he was a foreigner, and felt annoyed and his dignity offended. I had only a few moments with him. After reminding him that he was completely protected in the secret place of the most high, and that the annoyance was far more lethal than the photography, I played this lift for him. He got it. He said he felt uplifted, in a holy place. He understood that we are to see each other as we are, the image of God. He knew he was meant to leave the bus to come here. He would be back.

- 7/30/2012Adding my expression of gratitude for this lift--one I needed much! The insights are priceless and show the 'amplitude' of Jesus' love. I appreciate Christine sharing her experience and all the comments, too. Needed to forgive a deep hurt this weekend but see the necessity of going much deeper to know hatred and animosity are never part of God's man so going to wash those feet!
Love and blessings to all!

- 7/30/2012Thank you Christine for sharing this experience of protection by washing feet. I love this example of Jesus washing the disciples feet. When facing a gritty aggressive situation we need to remember how Jesus washed his disciples feet. Jesus first laid aside his garments and girded himself with a towel. Although he did it physically, it was symbolic of the material view we have to lay aside, and protect ourselves with confidence in the power of Spirit, good. You did it so successfully and promptly in this case.
Like Lori, #60, I am reading through the Anthology of Classic Articles, and one of them referred to a statement by Mrs. Eddy about attacking error (not physically), "We attack the sinner's belief in the pleasure of sin, alias the reality of sin,...destroy this belief....." (Retrospection and Introspection pg. 63).
It might not be easy to lay aside our material views - the belief in the reality of sin (garments).
But it feels good to have more confidence in the power of Spirit, the allness of the divine Mind (the protective towel).

- 7/30/2012When we see a person for who he really is, he will always be at his best when he is around us. I am grateful to have witnessed this many many times under circumstances considered normal, questionable, and hostile. Now I'll go look for some feet to wash today.

- 7/30/2012Amy (#33 & #59), in the wee hours of the morning, I went to Radical Acts -- right after listening to Christine's gem of a DL. I rejoiced my way through three or four of the commitments to act like Jesus, and can't wait to return tonight to rest on the porch of the other committed disciples.
I say "rest on the porch" because I just finished watching the touching video that TMCYouthChannel posted on the gentle foot-washing follower of Jesus who let God change her home from a photography studio to "Our Father's Porch" to care for those who are in the temporary "homeless" stage in their lives. Bless you for posting the link to that video, Bob in Washington (#54)!
Every word and deed uttered here speaks -- sings! -- to me, and I want every dear poster (and the dear DLer!) to know that. But please permit this horse-lover to single out the gentle hoof-washing done by Nancy (#29) and the tender lesson of the seat-in-the-saddle-shifting story told by Betty (#57).
And, oh, I have to add this: Nela (#51) I am asking myself whether I would have, if not relinquished my seat, at the very least left it to join the young man and the elderly usher on the floor at the front of the church? I pray so. Thank you for sharing that story, that I may further open and en-light-en my eyes as to how to love, not in word, but in deed.

- 7/30/2012Thank you, Christine. Radical response is needed when it seems most difficult to act radically, when fear or intimidation swell. Connecting to foot washing gives specific thoughts to start with, and I'll be able to listen more clearly to angels, not threats. Instead of what can I think to save me, it becomes what truths apply to save the one threats seem to be controlling while threats try to get control of me? When no such threats seem to loom, the best way to work with today's Lift is to wash feet for anyone that pops to thought from the past, and anyone we see outside, on the news, or hear about from others. If I practice this enough, it could help avoid future emergency needs. This isn't invading their thought, it's treating the impression it has left on me. Mental foot washing practice doesn't require so-called Bad people or episodes, but can include so-called personality flaws that seem to go with people we know. I'll be keeping a pan of soapy water mentally handy. Thanks to so many above. #51 nela, wonder if they spoke to him later? #53 Diane, that's special feedback on this Lift! #65 Michèle, I like you connect feet to being closest, that is, standing on material grounds. Since bare feet were the dirtiest, we're to wash feet to match the body, more free from earthy connection. Jesus sent a blind man to wash clay from spit & earth he put on his eyes. He wanted eyes free of a mix of holy (his spit) & being made from dust. (John 9). Free our eyes to see to free feet.

- 7/30/2012I felt like all our feet were washed by the Christ this Sunday while having our CS "service"/foot washing/Sunday School for the five 17-19 years young Marine Recruits at Camp Pendleton. It was truly a holy time sharing the Truth with these dear young men, so unselfish, so open, sincere, interested and appreciative. They are all new to CS, having found it in training. For one, it was his very first time to learn about this Science of the Christ. One fellow calls himself an agnostic who is searching. It was his 2nd time coming here. What pure joy it was to be with them for this one hour on their spiritual journeys! One fellow got tears when I spoke of the healing power of gratitude and we all shared something we were thankful for.

- 7/30/2012Isa52:7--"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!"
The Christ has reached this person, and washed them clean through to delivering messages of the Kingdom here on earth!
Peter J. Jensen - Chesterfield, MO - USA
- 7/30/2012In 2008, the Hearts On Fire Committee at my C.S. branch church (1st Church - Creve Coeur, MO) sponsored a Sunday evening workshop in our Sunday School building on the topic of foot washing. After a presentation by a former Christian Science Air Force Chaplain and some group discussion, we were free to sit in a chair with a pan of water and towels near it, ready to have our feet washed by someone, or to sit on the floor by a chair and wait for someone wanting their feet to be washed. After washing and drying the feet, we applied a fragrant oil from Cedar trees from Lebanon (if memory serves me correctly) to each foot.
This experience was humbling each way - teaching something about the care and comfort of another, and letting ourselves be cared for and comforted.
Christine, thank you for the view of radical foot washing - washing and watching our own thinking, and cleansing our view of another's thoughts. Cleansing of thought this way is truly universal and can bring healing and change of thought across the globe in the twinkling of an eye.
This was a really inspired Daily Lift. Thank you, again, Christine.

- 7/30/2012Thank you, #57, Betty! Just Beautiful! Especially the part about "the spiritual meaning of physical contact." I loved how you said how important Touch is! That healed something for me as I was raised by a C.S. Mom who thought touching was wrong because it had to do with matter. Thus she was not physically affectionate and I thought she didn't like me. Thanks again!

- 7/30/2012I had heard the story mentioned by Nela (#51) around fifteen years ago, except it was in a different setting and faith tradition. I never heard a version before related to a C.S. church and testimony meeting. Sometimes the re-telling of stories time after time leads to a different reality - sort of like playing the "telephone" game.
I searched the internet and found several versions of the story, including one where the "stranger" was the pastor wearing a wig and false beard, all leading up to his sermon based upon the book of James 2:5.
See the related stories at: <http://www.free-online-bible-study.com/james-chapter-2.html>
Each version of the story including the the one related by Nela gives individual church members the opportunity to clean up their view of the visitor / stranger, and their outlook of themselves and their motives. As Nela finished her comments, she was so right in stating 'Now, that’s being “in service” to heal!'
Thank you Christine, and thanks also to Nela (#51).

- 7/30/2012Thank you, Christine. Your Lift gave just what I needed today. It shows how prayer is and that is really the safety we need. You helped this person in a profound way. So great. Yes, this is truly Christ's Way. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

- 7/31/2012Thank you so much for this message which really hits home with me. I was raped as a teenager and did not know how to handle it mentally, even though I had been raised in Christian Science. Your words show me that it is never too late to view my attacker as God views him, his spiritual reflection who can do no harm. You showed me how to grow and progress in my thinking.

My prayer for you is in Ephesians and Galatians, and so,
"For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God."
And I pray that God sends
"forth the Spirit of his Son into your heart, crying, Abba, Father."
And from Mrs Eddy,
"It is man’s moral right to annul an unjust sentence, a sentence never inflicted by divine authority."
I pray right now to know these things for you, and I'm sorry about your teen-age experience..

- 8/3/2012Thank you for sharing, Janet (#87). Since you have always been God's precious child, held secure in His keeping, the mortal picture of evil has never touched you. It is like a dream that vanishes when we come to understand the new heaven, new earth and new man which St. John already saw while in prison (Book of Revelation chapter 21 and 22). Rev. 12 and Rev. 21:1-5 say that the Christ love silences forever the "accuser"--the negative thoughts that seem to keep undermining our peace of mind each day and there shall be no more pain nor tears. The former things shall be forgotten. The Christ is God's message to human consciousness telling us when can never lose our goodness, innocence or purity because they are natural to us as God's image and likeness.
Is. 65:17 - "For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind." Ps. 45:13 says, "The king's daughter is all glorious within:" You are that daughter!

- 8/3/2012I've been out of town and only just now catching up on Daily Lifts from when I was away. This one is so precious--the comments have been especially touching. I thank Amy for the link to the Radical Acts--I popped over there and read all the comments and left one myself. Had a great AHA moment relating to how footwashing (both physical and metaphysical) washes away any evidence of the past, even up to the very last step taken, before the footwashing.
Like dear Janet above, I too suffered rape in my childhood. That, along with some other rough stuff, had felt as though it left deep "footprints" on my life, my heart, and soul. And thoughts of those people, the "perpetrators" seem to have permanent residence in my thinking. Certainly, over the years, as a CStist, I have experienced MUCH healing, for which I am eternally grateful.
But this Lift, and the related Radical Acts, have given me a fresh "tool" to use. I have just spent some time this past hour washing the feet of those people who seemed to have inflicted such "dirt" in my life. And I have been washing my feet as well. Such a feeling of renewal and freshness.
I am deeply grateful for these Lifts, and for all the overwhelming evidence of great growth going on in the hearts and lives of all these Lifters and Radical Act-ors.

- 8/8/2012I am catching up on Lifts...Thank you so much for this one. What a wonderful healing. It reminded me of something that happened many years ago. The phone would ring, and when I answered I heard a man's voice uttering a string of obscenities. This happened a couple of times, and each time, I hung up rather quickly. I think it was about the third time that I was impelled to respond by telling him that he was God's beloved child. I don't remember what else I told him, and I don't think I said very much before he hung up, but I know I spoke from my heart and that God gave me the words which were spontaneous and not planned out ahead for when and if he called. Anyway, that was the end of those disturbing calls and it could well be that the Christ touched his thought as Love impelled my response.

- 8/10/2012Thank you, Anne, (#92) for sharing your experience of responding to obscene phone calls with the Christ message.
I too had a similar experience when I was in graduate school. I was awoken in the middle of the night by a man saying obscene things and it caught me off guard and frightened me. I had never heard such talk before. But when I hung up, I determined right then and there that I would never be caught off guard again. If anyone did that again, I would be ready with healing truths as you were. Sure enough, I was again awoken in the middle of the night by the obscene caller, but this time I was absolutely at peace. I told him he was the man of God's creating, made in the divine image and likeness; that purity, goodness, unselfishness, compassion were natural to him, and that God gave him dominion over sin, lust, and hatred. I told him God is divine Love and that is the only love which truly satisfies. The man listened to me quietly the whole time I was speaking. And that was the end of the obscene phone calls.
I'm seeing now that this is what is needed every moment--being ready to wash the feet of anyone who appears to be mesmerized by sensuality--correcting our thought of them and seeing them only as God sees them--good, pure, innocent and whole.
