We are currently airing a two-week series on the Ten Commandments from Exodus chapter 20 in the Bible. Today's Lift references the 1st Commandment.

GOD FIRST:I appreciate the decision to "amplify" interests in the daily lift.Today, briefly in prayer I asked God:"what do require of me,and how can I solve my current problems?" Sometimes, the solution to our problems are "directly in from of us" Eventually,as "I listen" God will furnish the answer.Someday, with God's help it's my desire to visit the Mother Church,as well as the campus of Harvard University, and enjoy a baseball game at Fenway Park. May I remind myself:God first.
Thanks!

Thank you so much Julie for that lift. I have a job interview tomorrow and a lot of fear was coming to me. But hearing your lift made me realize that I need to be putting God first, and let the sustaining infinite put me in my right place. Then all will work out harmoniously. Thank you!

We just returned from being guests at a beautiful wedding of a young couple I have known for several years. My wife and I were both pleased to hear the officiating Clergyman encourage the couple to put God first in their lives. (The invitation included the statement "Due to religious reasons, no alcohol is permitted). It was a very happy evening, with wit, humour, and tears of joy. This daily lift is a great blessing and fits so well with the theme of our experience this evening. Thank you so much Julie.

"The 1st Commandment is easy" said the 10 ear old girl. "Don't think about anything more than you think about God"
When God comes first in our thoughts, in our lives, we inevitably obey the other 9 Commandments!
This is the first thing we should think about: not our need; not our love one; even our own children; but God.
"But rather seek you the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you." http://bible.cc/luke/12-31.htm
Lucas 12:31

Thanks, Julie, for “God first.” That precious child’s understanding of the First Commandment is all we need, really – “Don’t think about anything more than you think about God.” There is no other “powers that be.” It’s just that simple. The Truth is simple. When things start getting complicated, it’s a “wake up” call for me, that there’s just too much human opinion going on. My experiences are way better when I simply put God first rather than let even my own understanding and good intentions be my gods. Christian Science continues to guide and protect me as I yield increasingly to Christ’s Christianity of living God’s laws of Love. “God is Love” (I John 4). For me, “Love first,” has proven most powerful in challenging anything unlike Love, like sin, sickness, and death. “In different ages the divine idea assumes different forms, according to humanity's needs. In this age it assumes, more intelligently than ever before, the form of Christian healing. This is the babe we are to cherish. This is the babe that twines its loving arms about the neck of omnipotence, and calls forth infinite care from His loving heart” (Mis 370:12).

Dear Julie,
Thank you so much for this. I love what the little girl said "Don't think about anything more, than you think about God." Recently I had been trying to understand why the Bible (specifically Psalms) focuses a lot on praising God..not that I am against it in any way.
I could easily do a Bible Lesson on Praises and Singing to God because there is so much in the Bible around Praising and Singing. I felt however that there was more than the act of physically singing and praising.especially when you consider the importance of healing.
Well a few months ago it hit me. As a child I grew up listening to the CS Hymns being placed on tapes. I would play them quietly in the morning and as I looked back on that, I realized that my thought during those moments was always tuned into strong affirmations about God and my individuality. They prepared me to forgive, love and keep focused on God.
Praising God and singing God's Praises allows us, for those moments, to break the mesmerism and think about God, good. When we try to think of the height, depth, breadth, might and majesty of God, we have no time for anything else.
Finally I loved the Lord's Prayer. During the first week of Jan. 2007 we had a Lesson on God and the Lord's Prayer was the focus, section by section. That brought IMMENSE healing in my Life. It was then I realized how complete and how healing the Lord's Prayer IS.
Many thanks to the DL Team, Julie and other CS Practitioners for these 10 days.

Literally, I just woke up at 3am (why art thou disquieted within me, O my soul?), and I grabbed my Science and Health, and finished the last few pages on the chapter of Physiology (I had been making my way through this chapter the day before), and the chapter ends with this line: I am determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him glorified; summing up the chapter beautifully. With this line ringing in my head, the red carpet was rolled out for today's Daily Lift! I love how the One Mind moves us all..only Love, only God, all around...and I found myself saying to my soul, return unto thy rest, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee...
Thank you for this Lift!

I've been deeply disturbed for a week by recent vicious verbal attacks my husband has suffered in an academic setting, which are totally unfounded. Julie's clarity "to focus every thought on God" is a clear path that I can use minute-by-minute to check my mesmerism and stand firm on the truth. It is a relief to understand that I don't have the power to fix these problems, only God does. Thank you, Julie.

An awesome, awakening Lift! Thank you, Julie. This is as much about putting God last, as it is putting Him 1st. Following the dear child means to think about our Father again one last time before speaking or acting, and think of Him the very last thought before sleep, which I try to do. Between a day's 1st and last thoughts, it's a wonderful idea to make sure we have more thoughts directly relating to God, than we give to any other topic or person, and more than all the other thoughts totaled together. It's a challenge, but worth working to reach the goal. The closer we daily achieve this, the more effective thoughts on other topics will be, for we'll receive divine direction on how to think on anything touching our lives. I'm starting by thanking God for all the following: Giving the little girl such inspiration; her sharing it in Sunday School; Julie sharing with us; for Daily Lifts & all involved with them from the first idea of it on up to today, and for their tomorrows ever outward from divine Mind's unfoldment. I'm thanking Him for all who listen to the Lifts, and for those who share their inspiration or questions in comments. Both responses bring fresh inspiration and growth. The questions, sometimes with a tinge of doubt, start me praying, so I get stronger convictions or new insights. Thanks Nate for a 2 week focus on the Commandments. I'm placing an order for spiritual clothing several sizes larger, for I'm expecting to grow. #45 Lori got the "last" part, too!

Such a powerful way to explain the first commandment. So simple and pure. It made me think, how could I have more thoughts about God than other things? I realized I can wonder "How does God see this?" Or "What are God's thoughts?" Then be calm and receive the angel thoughts. Or just be and feel God's presence in that moment, That puts him there first. There are so many ways to think about actually living this beautiful idea that is the first commandment. As others have said in the lift, all the other commandments fall in place when you live the first. Wonderful! Thank you for this powerful, gentle, and loving lift Julie and thanks to all of you who posted responses!

"God gives you his spiritual ideas and in turn they give you daily supplies. Never ask for tomorrow, it is enough that God supplies all your needs and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment." what a wonderful thought Mary Baker Eddy has written to express the truth of always putting God first. If church is about helping each other keep God first in our lives, inspiring us to think about God, and more importantly, think out from God and with God as our only Mind, God's ideas as our only thoughts/actions, then what can we better do individually, collectively, and institutionally, to reduce the distractions from God? Fewer meetings and less talk/emails about taking care of matter and personalities, yet more directly dealing with issues? More clarity and humble compassion in our interpersonal problem-solving, applying divine Love to learn/listen to/meet human needs? Better management so less time is spent wondering about conflicting messages and inefficient rituals? Less passive-aggressive avoidance and more direct kindness-accountability? Less faking and more authenticity? Less psychological denial/self-deception and smug mob-think, and more courageous application of CS to heal social/political/economic/environmental ills and gently helping each other? Less secret club of clones and more enthusiastic loving inclusivity of the universality of Christ and diversity of God's expression and the teachers we need for our own spiritual growth? Grace comforting those who need freeing from guilt/shame? How to nurture thoughts of/from God being the most experienced/expressed? The most prevalent and powerful, providing peace? More humble obedience to our Manual (Matthew Code, Golden Rule, no gossip, CS nursing/healing, Christian fellowship, distinctively democratic...)

Julie - Profound, as usual. And so meaningful couched in simple terms of supply, order, first..... too bad that we adults sometimes let things get so busy or complex that we seem unable to see our situation with the eyes of the 3rd grader. Much like The Emperor's Clothes, isn't it? My dad - a wise, frugal man; child of the Great Depression - used to say often: "If you watch the pennies, the dollars take care of themselves." It is SO true, and not unlike what this precious 3rd grader has said. To me, she said "If we listen to God first, the other commandments [as well as life's challenges] take care of themselves." Bless you, your great family, & your demonstration of service.

Thanks Julie. What a wonderfully sweet lesson to us all ... to let the childlike thought, the very children of God in our midst, lead us to a fuller understanding of God and His/Her wonderful laws that support us and everyone, working out the purposes of good only. I have been so grateful to find that humility which puts God first as all powerful and everpresent, frees us to love only what God supplies and that meets every human need through Love's spiritual ideas. For me, feeling Love's liberation from all human want and woe, suggestions of other gods, naturally lets me love myself a little more as God's spiritual image and, consequently, my neighbor, as that lovely, loving, lovable image of God. Jesus assured his followers that the little children, or childlike trust in the spiritual sense of God and man, lead us to find our heart's desire met in God, completely. Wonderful.

About a year ago, I began the practice of waking in the morning by running through the synonyms of God before climbing out of bed. If my thinking wanders away to the mundane, I just start over. It sort of goes like this "God is all, in all, God being Life is all activity, God being Truth includes all the facts, God being Love is the great giver, God being Spirit is all-presence, God being Soul is complete consciousness, God being Principle is ever-operative law and God being Mind includes all knowing" I take hold of each concept and if anything intrudes, I simple start again. Set the alarm clock a little early. I cannot tell you how much better things go when I put God at the start of the day. Given a little more time, I go through the list again know how man reflects these all eternal aspects.
A little while ago, another daily Lifter, mentioned that she like to run through the alphabet, putting a God-characteristic to each letter. She said it was different each time. Her exercise is a great project. I just have to keep track where I am in the alphabet! Also, I get stuck on Q, X, and Z Ideas?
Hey Troy, #24, maybe I will try singing the alphabet ... alone in the car! Troy, I hear you. Look at the effort that all parents put in teaching their children to say "thank you" and the benefits they get from learning to do so. Every day is Father's day!
Oh boy, back to basics! The 10 Commandments.
David

Loved your message Julie...and it brought to mind something important: while we need to put God first more...it's also good to remember that God is putting you and me first every second of every day. God is realizing you and me, knowing you and me, thinking you and me, loving you and me without stop. He puts us first...and that's how we're able to put Him first, by reflection.

Putting God i.e. Love first is the third state of' 'mental growth' that Eddy points out in her article The Way (Mis 355-259) . She says :"Love impels good works. Loved is greatly needed, and must be had to mark the way in divine Science." She further adds, "He that seeketh aught besides God, loseth in Life, Truth, and Love." This is a wonderful parallel to the First Commandment. We must put God, Love first --no ifs ands and buts about it! The childs answer to the question demonstrated her purity of thought. Thanks Julie for sharing it today.

Sooo wonderful, dear Julie. Thanks for the uplift. For #94 there's a CD offered in Reading Rooms called "G is for God." It's meant for children but we're all God's kids so I love playing it for myself - it is full of innocent joy and that song goes through the entire alphabet with each letter describing a quality of God. They do make up a few of there own words and "z" is one of them...but you get a great message. I loved the idea of working with the 7 synonyms a-z while still in bed. Thanks to all for the inspired God-ideas & sharing.

Thanks Julie for your sharing today. It reminded me of the statement: "God, Good, Guides, Guards and Governs".....
And, thanks to #94, Nancy from Yellow Springs! I loved your sharing of the idea of saying the synonyms for God each morning (before getting out of bed) and each of your thoughts were SO helpful! I find that waking up with God and going to sleep with God makes for a happier life...PERIOD!
Before I put my feet on the ground in the morning, I say hymn #342: "This is the day the LORD hath made; be glad give thanks rejoice....."

Thanks Julie. Fun, Fun, Fun to be focusing on the 10 commandments together with daily lifters! I always appreciated that Mrs. Eddy shared that the first one, was her favorite commandment. And I appreciate. #94- Nancy's sharing too. Horsey or no horsey, they add to my spiritual warehouse.
There is so much to be grateful for...and it all starts with #1----GOD!!

The first commandment, our favorite text. Nancy #94 you got me going. Q is for quietness and quick understanding, our queen of life--love, and qurreling only with ourselves, never others. X , we can cheat a little with excellence, exquisite beauty, extra special attention, existence in heaven, exaltation of Spirit. Z is for zest, Zion--the perfection of beauty, zeal of the Godly kind, zebras-- one of God's amazing creatures. Surely an unending flow of gratitude comes in our alphabetical praise.

Precioso, profundo y sanador Lift!!!
Cristy .

I love this idea, Julie. Thank you for this lift.
When we put God first (and think about him most), we feel safe, loved, cared for- we remember that He is taking care of everything, and we don't need to worry. God's in charge of our business, our family, health, relationships, our learning, all of our expenses and needs. We remember that He is the one taking care of those around us, so we don't have to fear.
When something comes up that seems wrong, worrisome or troubling we can shift our thought back and actively affirm God's allness in each moment. Love is meeting our needs and those around us- all over the world. We can spread God's love when we're filled with it and the peace that goes along. We can respond to everything from a God perspective... and not react in fear, anger or hate.

- 6/18/2012GOD FIRST:I appreciate the decision to "amplify" interests in the daily lift.Today, briefly in prayer I asked God:"what do require of me,and how can I solve my current problems?" Sometimes, the solution to our problems are "directly in from of us" Eventually,as "I listen" God will furnish the answer.Someday, with God's help it's my desire to visit the Mother Church,as well as the campus of Harvard University, and enjoy a baseball game at Fenway Park. May I remind myself:God first.
Thanks!

- 6/18/2012"The 1st Commandment is easy" said the 10 ear old girl.

"El 1er Mandamiento es fácil", dijo la niña de 10 años. "No pienses en nada más de lo que pienses en Dios"
Cuando Dios es lo primero en nuestros pensamientos, en nuestras vidas, ¡inevitablemente obedecemos los otros 9 mandamientos!
Esto es lo primero que debemos pensar: no es nuestra necesidad; no nuestro enamorado; ni siquiera en nuestros propios hijos; sino en Dios.

- 6/18/2012Thanks, Julie, for “God first.” That precious child’s understanding of the First Commandment is all we need, really – “Don’t think about anything more than you think about God.” There is no other “powers that be.” It’s just that simple.

- 6/18/2012Dear Julie,
Thank you so much for this.

- 6/18/2012Literally, I just woke up at 3am (why art thou disquieted within me, O my soul?), and I grabbed my Science and Health, and finished the last few pages on the chapter of Physiology (I had been making my way through this chapter the day before), and the chapter ends with this line: I am determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him glorified; summing up the chapter beautifully. With this line ringing in my head, the red carpet was rolled out for today's Daily Lift! I love how the One Mind moves us all..only Love, only God, all around...and I found myself saying to my soul, return unto thy rest, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee...

- 6/18/2012An awesome, awakening Lift!

- 6/18/2012Such a powerful way to explain the first commandment.

- 6/18/2012"God gives you his spiritual ideas and in turn they give you daily supplies. - 6/18/2012If church is about helping each other keep God first in our lives, inspiring us to think about God, and more importantly, think out from God and with God as our only Mind, God's ideas as our only thoughts/actions, then what can we better do individually, collectively, and institutionally, to reduce the distractions from God?

- 6/18/2012Julie - Profound, as usual. To me, she said "If we listen to God first, the other commandments [as well as life's challenges] take care of themselves." - 6/18/2012I am currently teaching a class of the very youngest children in our Sunday School, so I am looking forward to the next commandment on up to the 10th. What a great idea to present the commandments and to realize that the first one covers them all! Thank you so much!

- 6/18/2012Thanks Julie. Wonderful.

- 6/18/2012I remember a testimony given by a young lawyer about teaching the three, four years old class. He said he was more nervous than being in the court room on a case. He always repeated the Childrens Prayer, with the line ,-" guide my little feet ( his were size 13) up to thee." He said he learned more about God (Love) than he had ever done before, because of their purity, humility and honesty. Thanks everyone for your comments, it makes my day.

- 6/18/2012About a year ago, I began the practice of waking in the morning by running through the synonyms of God before climbing out of bed.

- 6/18/2012Loved your message Julie...and it brought to mind something important: while we need to put God first more...it's also good to remember that God is putting you and me first every second of every day. God is realizing you and me, knowing you and me, thinking you and me, loving you and me without stop. He puts us first...and that's how we're able to put Him first, by reflection.

- 6/18/2012Putting God i.e.
Carolyn,
- 6/18/2012Thank you Julie! Today I really needed this this reminder-GOD FIRST.

- 6/18/2012Thanks, DL, for the focus and feature, and for Julie for leading us off. I hope that "little girl" is listening and reading too! So-called teaching in SS is definitely a two way street. I recall my own experiences as a student and a teacher with plenty of evidence. We are all teachable learners from the One Teacher.

- 6/18/2012thank you and god bless...that was exactly what i needed to hear this morning...then of course we get exactly what we need when we put god first.

- 6/18/2012Thanks Julie - I am preparing to work at the

In fact each moment needs that same attention
to be centered on God.
Thanks again

- 6/18/2012Sooo wonderful, dear Julie.

- 6/18/2012Thank you Julie, and all who added such wonderful comments. God always sends us exactly what we need with perfect timing, and this Lift was no exception. He saw me swirling in the undertow of mortal mind and threw me a life line. Oceans of Love.
Carolyn,
- 6/18/2012Thanks Julie, I really needed this reminder today and I will keep God First. I like #94's morning exercise of putting God First, I will use this and probably use through out the day,

- 6/18/2012Thanks Julie for your sharing today.

- 6/18/2012Thanks Julie.

- 6/18/2012Thanks, Thinking about God in the 1st commandment is also, to me, about subordinating my spirit in the first Beatitude to God's. It's about humility in concidering God first and foremost.

- 6/19/2012The first commandment, our favorite text.

- 6/19/2012Precioso, profundo y sanador Lift!!!
Cristy .

- 6/19/2012Thank you David #95, for youe beautiful description of how God puts us first as His realization. And Robert #28, for your wonderfully articulate and perfectly logical connection between being God's child - God's thought -and right reasoning being spiritual existence - the I AM!
I love each and every Lift, but this one is especially meaningful and dear to me, and it has been in my thought more or less constantly since first hearing it yesterday. Profound, yet so simple even a grownup can get it! Thank you, dear Julie.

- 10/1/2012I love this idea, Julie.
Thank you Julie! Here's to spreading peace!
