I like what a hymn says: "Rouse ye, rouse ye, face the foe, Rise to conquer death and sin, On with Christ to victory go, O', side with God and win." That's the battle, and the battle cry- with the promise of victory over the appearances of evil. Armed with the Christ consciousness, we have the sword of Truth, and the Shield of Salvation. Thanks, Mary Alice, for this timely reminder of where the battle with self is always waged- within our own thought.

Christianity a religion of war? Mental war.
When the devil took Jesus (mentally) to the top of the temple it had no power to push him down, Jesus was protected, he had the Armor of God of which Paul warned us: the essence of the word of God, Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation. Matt. 4
He said we were not fighting against men but against imaginations, thoughts of other power than God’s. http://bible.cc/2_corinthians/10-5.htm
He taught us to be prepared for this mental war with the sword of Spirit and the shield of faith; taught us how to protect our steps and our head (our thinking) http://bible.cc/ephesians/6-10.htm

El cristianismo una religión de guerra? Guerra mental.

Thank you for this thought provoking Lift, Mary Anne. Sometimes the precious hypotheses we hang on to so fiercely are the very ones we really do need to release our hold on. And studying the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, together with praying with a willing heart to God, will reveal whatever needs to be corrected, not by struggling with the error, but by expressing gratitude for the Truth.
Thank you Nate and the production team; the BoL and lecturers; and Your Daily Lift family.

Dear Mary Alice,
Thank you for your Daily Lift. I very much appreciated the thought your brought as it pertains to the use of the sword. Sometimes when it seems so daunting or discouraging to always have to be 'swording' your way through the error, I remind myself of my role as I work in the garden.
Sometimes my role is to nourish, water and fertilize the plants. Other times my role is to sit and absorb the beauty of God's creation and other times I have to fight the weeds, vines and other attempts to hide the beauty that is already there.
As we remove the mask of weeds, we uncover the beauty of Truth, of God's Creation. Sometimes I never leave the Garden until all of the weeding has been completed. This reminds me that when I hold the right thought for myself, my work is only complete when I hold that same 'right thought' for all mankind. The battle therefore is never with man, but with the thoughts that would attempt to hide that true identity.
I had been working with the above thoughts this week so your Daily Lift is just what I needed. Thank you. Today, I needed to carry the sword of Truth as I walk with the Love of God, for ALL mankind.

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (Matt.24)
Didn't Jesus warn us that the warfare with the flesh would continue in our day just as in the days before the flood and that we must watch faithfully and be not troubled?

Wow, powerful lift, Mary Alice!! For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;II Cor 10:4. Thank you Mary Alice for a deeply healing lift-such clarity. I have studied the very negative aspect of Christian warfare and it did color my trust or interest in Christianity for some time negatively. How could people do what they have done in the name of Christ? I long ago let go of this position but I certainly appreciate such clarity that you are providing here. Take up the sword to dash negativity, anything that combats God and goodness. Evil is struck down and individuals are uplifted. Lovely, absolutely perfect. I will take up the sword today to strike down anything that is unlike God in my thought today. Have a wonderful day and thank you again.

Thank you a good reminder to put on the whole armour of God before, during and after doing battle with error. "Clad in the spiritual armour of God", wearing the breastplate of Truth, gaining the clear understanding of the nothingness of error and the allness of God. When seeming to go into battle against materialism, doing so with confidence, with a clear calm trust overcoming every false sense of unreality. A mental warfare to cast down imaginations - a war of peace to bring us an expected end - be ye therefore perfect even as your father in heaven is perfect, having the mind of Christ. Yes that is Christian warfare. Now is the accepted time, now is come salvation, now is the time to rise about the mortal suggestion of I'll do it tomorrow perhaps when I feel a little better, a little stronger, when I have a little more understanding - Now - where I AM

Three years ago, a friend took me to hear a visiting pastor preach at her Baptist Church who was selected by a famous Evangelical as one of 7 to carry his torch. I was then selected by him to be one of 70 he would teach. I bought CD's of his life's work for $500 and listened to them at random. One of his (hopefully earlier) sermon's demanded that the listener "Declare out loud that you have doubted God or God's Love for you at least once in your life. If you don't confess this, you are a hypocrite." My first thought was that I didn't think that I had ever doubted God or God's Love, only doubted my connection to that Love at certain difficult times in my life, but maybe I was missing something and I didn't want to be a hypocrite, so I did as the pastor said. (The Holy Spirit has since convicted me of being an over-achiever.) The instant I made that false declaration, every joint in my body became in excruciating pain... and I knew that I was battling with "principalities" or "imaginations" as there was no other reason for this to happen. So I had to fight it out spiritually, as Jesus did. It was my battle with the demonic. I prayed humbly and fervently. I put on the whole armor of God. I turned to the Word of God and then the Christian Science literature. A day and a half into it (no sleep, no relief), I read an article by a Christian Science practitioner from England, from a saved Journal, who, in preparing for the practice, prayed, "Forgive me, Father, for not seeing every one of your children as perfect as you see them." And God answered her, "There is nothing to forgive." Sudden tears flowed from my eyes as I read this. And as I reread it, instantaneous healing occurred. My joints were released. I was saved by God and His Love. I had experienced "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual -- neither in nor of matter -- and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well. Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love..." (S&H 14:12-18) that Eddy writes about. Needless to say, I decided not to become a disciple of that pastor, preferring Eddy's enlightened work instead: God's Love for us is constant, not at all dependent on our thoughts (though good thoughts keep our connection to Christ pure), but God is always, only Life, Truth and Love. Now whenever something questionable arises, I check it out with the Holy Spirit first. The "still, small voice" of the Christ guides me in the right direction. We are all safe in God's enduring Love for us. Thank you, Mary Alice, for this lift and the reminder to put on the shield of faith and wield the sword of Spirit every day. I am so grateful for Christian Science!!! Big love to you all.

Right on the mark, Mary Alice. With reference to the Christ, whom Jesus exemplified so perfectly, the Bible says, "Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity . . ." (Hebrews 1:9, echoing Psalms 45:7). And Science and Health says, "His rebuke was fearful", a reference to Jesus by someone of his time. Jesus utterly destroyed error in every form - sin disease, death. But he did so from the highest standpoint of love that can be attained - love for God, the only power and creator, and love for man who is made in God's image and likeness. Thank you for stating so clearly that the true warfare is against tyrannical beliefs and systems of thought, not against people.

"Lean to the left, lean to the right, stand up, sit down, Fight, Fight, Fight!" An old Football Cheer in High School. In talking with a C.S. Practitioner, she declared that in her metaphysical Treatments for Healing she "detects and detonates" any strongholds in thought of error or false beliefs about Life, God and Man! Yes, to be a Christian and a Christian Scientist it does take strength, courage and conviction to see the error to be destroyed and then to mentally step onto the battlefield and destroy with the sword of Truth, the shield of Love, any entrenched suggestions of mortality. Christian Science is not just positive thinking, but a mightly pulling down through our knowledge of God - the false beliefs in sin, disease and death. Go Team, Go! Fight, Fight, Fight!

Thank you, Jan (#34), for your question. Someone just shared with me this quote from Mary Baker Eddy: "It is unquestionable, however, that at this hour the armament of navies is necessary, for the purpose of preventing war and preserving peace among nations." (Miscellany 286) This correspondent pointed out that armed forces are a deterrent, rather than as an aggressive agent. (Thanks, RW.) There is an article called "Pacifism Analyzed" that you can find in a Christian Science Reading Room (starting in April you will be able to find it on-line!) which addresses this. It was written during World War I. I found it very helpful.

Thanks, Mary Rose.
Hello to Jan, #36. I most likely don't have a full answer to your questions, but I've read and heard of Christian Scientists who've been in battle, and the wonderful safety and peace their prayer brought to situations is remarkable. I feel we need to pray for the safety of everyone in the world whether in a war zone, whether military or civilian, man, woman or child. God is right where the trouble appears to be. This prayer is for me to so that I can continue to remember God's allness and all-power. In my prayers I find I need to understand the peacefulness of everyone of God's children no matter what their feelings are about others. Some times I pray to understand that the victory of divine Love is already established from before the beginning of the earth. Since God is all, there is really nothing to battle, even though we do need to "fight the good fiight" as St. Paul has outlined it and demonstrated it for us. In our treatment, prayer, we begin with perfection and stay with perfection. This kind of prayer and our living of it can bring the lasting peace that we need. Good thoughts everyone.

Thank you Mary Alice Rose. This was extremely helpful to me in my spiritual understanding. I didn't know that about Jesus and the sword. I did know about mental warfare, because my Dad and mom divorced bitterly. So Dad wouldn't want to follow the ruling of child support. So we had to learn that evil isn't person, place or thing. But we had to cherish what Mrs. Eddy showed, that Christian Scientists be a law unto yourselves that mental malpractice cannot hurt you asleep or awake.
We were sustained and Dad didn't have the power. God is power. I recently have been reminded to be more alert and go back to those childhood learnings. They were a gift of protection. My heavenly Father lavished total care.

Thank you Mary Alice. As Margaret said, this lift is very thought provoking. I thought of the armor, the helmet of salvation is the Mind of Christ. The breast plate of righteousness is the love of God. The shield of faith is our adherence to infinite Principle, and trust in Truth. The sword is the absolute knowing that God is all and evil has no power and no reality. These seven synonyms of God cannot be annulled or reversed. Thank you Saved, 26 for your comment

I love Mrs. Eddy's defiition of "Sword" in the glossary of Science and Health. The spiritual definition reads: "The idea of Truth; justice." This is the mental sword (the prayer of the righteous) that brings Truth to light and destroys anything that might oppose it.

The word "jihad" has very similar meaning in Islam. It really refers primarily to an inner mental personal activity much the same as this discussion in this lift about warfare.
It is about sincerity, finding the innocence of man, and the sacrifice of material beliefs.
Mrs. Eddy wrote that
"Each day I pray for the pacification of all national difficulties, for the brotherhood of man, for the end of idolatry and infidelity, and for the growth and establishment of Christian religion - Christ's Christianity. I also have faith that my prayer availeth, and that He who is overturning will overturn until He whose right it is shall reign." (Miscellany pg. 220).
I think the comment of "Saved" #26, is an excellent example of this kind of warfare.
I also think that soldiers on the battlefield (and at home) need more prayerful support as evidence of numerous recent tragic events regarding men and women in uniform. They often report they can feel the benefits when they are supported with prayer.

Thank you, Mary Alice. This is great. It reminds me of the story in this week's Bible Lesson on Reality, where Isaiah sees God and His angels IN A VISION. Isaiah feels too unhealed, unworthy, and "unclean," to be having this wonderful experience. So divine Love sends a "sword"-- an angel message in the form of a hot coal (symbol of Life's holy presence and power) that touches his lips and announces that his sins are forgiven. And they are, for shortly after this, Isaiah willingly, and eagerly, accepts God's invitation to be a prophet of the Lord. How precious is the grace of God!

Thank you Mary Alice and to all comments for reminding me to that God is in control. With His Love, Truth, Life, Mind, His all presence, we can easily see that error, weeds, fears, un-truths all drop away, for they are powerless to His light and might. A very uplifting thought! I need not struggle because God (good) conquers all error leaving us whole, complete, reflections and expressions of Love. We are not, never have, and never will be bound by error. I'm glad this lift was about waging the inner battle, as it were. I find that there are any number of Christians who ignore the commandment "thou shall not kill" if it suits their political purposes. I so agree with Bev #58 and Avis #64 that "NOOO0000 !!!!! is an effective prayer, esp in the immediate moment of discord. In 1987, I was in a taxi cab in Chicago that got hit by a car that swung the cab sideways into the opposite lane. I screamed "NOOO0000 !!!!!!" as I saw cars fast approaching me in that exposed position and one by one, cars breaked and turned away, missing the cab. There was a five car collision, but miraculously, no one was hurt and we all gratefully walked away.
Another time, during a Pentecostal healing service, I heard a woman trashing herself for a drinking problem and I yelled, "NOOO000 !!! That is a lie about you." She was so startled and grateful to me for interrupting that drama that her demeanor changed for the rest of the evening.
Am remembering an article by Norm Bleichman called "Healing a Cold" using "industrial strength Christian Science" in a mid February Sentinel in which Norm enumerates the many verbal ways Eddy demands that we "deny" the appearance of disease. "NOOO000 !!!!! is a good way to begin the protest.
The hardest might be to say NOOO000 !!!! to guilt and that is what I suspect prolonged the experience I related in # 26 when I felt guilty about ignoring wisdom, until hearing God's answer, "There is nothing to forgive" set me free, instantly. Praise God!!!

You describe Christian warfare well, Mary Alice. Jesus said to love our enemies (Matt.5 & Luke 6) and to do good to them that curse us. There have been many wars and other aggression done in the name of Christianity, but those who do them could be likened to the story of the Trojan horse. The horse did not attack, but the warriors hidden in it did. People use the name of Christianity to gain acceptance to others' thoughts, but that doesn't make them Christians, nor does it make Christianity doing harm. It is wrong thoughts, claims or concepts that we tackle, not people. So, "Onward, Christian soldiers......" This is late, but when I went to edit my 1st thoughts after hearing Mary Alice, I found all but the 1st sentence did not get saved. I'd gotten so sleepy when I 1st wrote it, I didn't post it until I was more alert, so I had to fight sleep again and use fresh prayer to replace it. This Lift provoked some deep thought and sweet sharing. It strips any sugar coating off and brought out strong and loving responses, which the Daily Lifts usually do, but this one forced us to face a serious necessity of Christian thought and activity. A warm thanks to everyone.

Thank you #45 for your powerful healing and treatment for your family. I felt such strength and love in your words. Thank you for sharing that with the DL community.
Thank you Mary Alice. I too feel this is not a topic I give much thought to and yet it is one that we really do face everyday. Very thought provoking and profound as others too have shared.

Cristy

Thanks Mary Alice. Your clear message made me go back to a little book entitled “The Ultimate Freedom' by John H. Wyndham, where he describes his predicament as a Japanese prisoner of war. On page 25 of his remarkable book he was asked: 'How do you feel about dying now? Because he has been praying for months his inspired answer was: ' You could not possibly kill me, for God, Spirit, created me spiritually; ...And if I were in your place, and you in mine, I could not kill you either; for the same God who created me spiritually, created you spiritually...' he was asked one last question: 'Have you any wish?'...His answer was: ' Yes, I have. I wish to understand all about Life,' Then he was returned to his cell.

It is because Christian Science is so simple we make it complicating.

As far as religion of war is concerned, based on many years of C/S study, I came to the conclusion that religion itself has caused most if not all the wars in human history. Follow me on this; there is one God only, and the many religions will agree that there is only one God. What makes religion so terrible is that it makes us think that "MY" religion is better than the other guy's, and this attitude is what makes wars. Suppose instead of thinking of God in a religious sort of way, we start seeing God as a practical demonstrait able science. Do people make wars over the science of mathematics, or chemistry, or astronomy, of course not, neither will they make wars over beliefs of God, when they understand God. C/S then is really a SCIENTIFIC explanation of what God really is.

- 3/22/2012I like what a hymn says: "Rouse ye, rouse ye, face the foe, Rise to conquer death and sin, On with Christ to victory go, O', side with God and win." That's the battle, and the battle cry- with the promise of victory over the appearances of evil. Armed with the Christ consciousness, we have the sword of Truth, and the Shield of Salvation. Thanks, Mary Alice, for this timely reminder of where the battle with self is always waged- within our own thought.

- 3/22/2012Christianity a religion of war?

- 3/22/2012Thank you for this thought provoking Lift, Mary Anne.

- 3/22/2012Dear Mary Alice,
Thank you for your Daily Lift.

- 3/22/2012Thank you Mary Alice for a deeply healing lift-such clarity.

- 3/22/2012Thank you a good reminder to put on the whole armour of God before, during and after doing battle with error.

- 3/22/2012Three years ago, a friend took me to hear a visiting pastor preach at her Baptist Church who was selected by a famous Evangelical as one of 7 to carry his torch.

- 3/22/2012Right on the mark, Mary Alice.

- 3/22/2012"Lean to the left, lean to the right, stand up, sit down, Fight, Fight, Fight!" An old Football Cheer in High School.

- 3/22/2012Thank you, Jan (#34), for your question.

- 3/22/2012Thank you Mary Alice Rose.

- 3/22/2012Thank you Mary Alice.

- 3/22/2012". . .evil will be struck down, but individuals will be uplifted." This is the heart of Christian Science and of our warfare with evil. Mary Baker Eddy proved this type of warfare victorious so many times.

- 3/22/2012I love Mrs. Eddy's defiition of "Sword" in the glossary of Science and Health. The spiritual definition reads: "The idea of Truth; justice." This is the mental sword (the prayer of the righteous) that brings Truth to light and destroys anything that might oppose it.
Thank you Mary Alice for this great reminder.

- 3/22/2012The word "jihad" has very similar meaning in Islam.

- 3/22/2012Thank you, Mary Alice.

- 3/22/2012Thank you Mary Alice and to all comments for reminding me to that God is in control. God is all and we are not separate from Him!
A beautiful day to all!!

- 3/22/2012I'm glad this lift was about waging the inner battle, as it were. "Killing" thoughts that stem from mortal mind is indeed our task!

I did that one night when I woke with a challenge of intense pain. - 3/22/2012This Daily Lift shows clearly what is the actual enemy.
Sadly, Christianity has been misused to fight wars. The ideas made plain in this Daily Lift are contributing to stopping that misuse.

- 3/22/2012Thank you Mary Alice. This lift has generated some useful and healing thoughts. I've never really enjoyed singing Onward Christian soldiers, but there is this wonderful phrase in that hymn I frequently visit and love, "all one body we, one in hope and doctrine, one in charity." and I cling to that thought for all mankind and myself. Thanks everyone for sharing your insights. AND #34, thanks Jan for your questions. There are CStists who are pacifists as well as those who do chose to serve in the military. As we seek our answers in prayer, we're each guided to our highest sense of service. And Try #15, what a lovely comment, thanks. Thanks DL team for all you're doing up there in Boston.

- 3/22/2012Thank you, Mary Alice and others for responding to my question about Christian Scientists being involved in war. I'm anxious to read the article for more insight.

- 3/23/2012I so agree with Bev #58 and Avis #64 that "NOOO0000 !!!!! is an effective prayer, esp in the immediate moment of discord.

- 3/23/2012You describe Christian warfare well, Mary Alice.

- 3/23/2012I had this conversation several years ago with a relative who was in extreme turmoil. I so appreciate this message which reinforces acknowledging that we must 'fight the good fight' - which is entirely with Mind.

- 3/23/2012Thank you #45 for your powerful healing and treatment for your family. I felt such strength and love in your words. Thank you for sharing that with the DL community.
Thank you Mary Alice. I too feel this is not a topic I give much thought to and yet it is one that we really do face everyday. Very thought provoking and profound as others too have shared.

Cristy

- 3/24/2012Thanks Mary Alice.

- 3/24/2012Thank you Mary Alice Rose for putting it so clear and simple.
It is because Christian Science is so simple we make it complicating.
It is always having that child like thought and not childish thought, when we all make progress.
All have a wonderful adventure.

- 4/23/2012As far as religion of war is concerned, based on many years of C/S study, I came to the conclusion that religion itself has caused most if not all the wars in human history.
