2/6: Sinless joy

2/6: Sinless joy

  1. Thank you, Mary Allice, for the idea that I am sinless joy's reflection! I've been praying about joy and joyfulness.
    Your message helps alot. Lovely.

  2. Thank you very much, Mary Alice. The concept of sinless joy is so needed in society. There is a lot of confusion over the nature of joy. People seem to rely on substances like alcohol to artificially produce the happiness they crave. I have just been reading an article in a main Australian newspaper about the drunken behaviour that ruined a recent holiday for the writer. We have a public holiday called Australia Day and some people see it as a license for ridiculous overindulgence, it seems. How great to instead endorse a pure joy like you discuss here.

  3. Anne from UK
Thank you Mary Alice for that beautiful inspiring practical message.

  4. God has endowed us with His own qualities -which are ours naturally to express through divine reflection; these should be natural because we are His image and likeness.
Harmonious qualities like immortality, vitality, ilimitation, beauty, goodness, painlessness, spirituality, indestructibility, etc.

  5. Thank you.

  6. Mary Alice, I can distinctily remember the exact moment I first read this: it was a real light-turning on moment! I felt as though I had just found the exact counterfact for almost everything that would claim to be a material sense of mankind. One of our men here is moving with his family to another state to take up a franchise. We were discussing the packing, and the long drive south. He said "We want to make it fun." And I told him that recently I had read that "fun" is meaningless amusement, but joy would carry them forward and reward their enterprise richly. (No Limits in Limitless Mind - an interview with Marceil DeLacy, CSJournal November 2010.) I really think "sinless joy" is the best anyone can say about everything.
Thank you Nate and the team; the BoL and lecturers; and the family of sinless joyful lifters.

  7. I have overcome a weight problem which hung around many years through understanding more of the joy of being, rather than the need for comforts. The greatest liberation has been that I no longer seek food as a substitute for joy, or friendship, or even companionship, but rather feel permeated by the over tones of divine Love in all I do.Lovely lift today, thank you.The Lesson Sermon on Soul is so enriching. Blessings and joy!

  8. Thank you. There is much to contemplate in that one powerful sentence. I appreciate your brining that to us today.

  9. Thank you, Mary Alice!!! Wonderful Lift!

  11. Thank you. One of my Prayers is to see that Joy is the natural expression of man. He reflects joy. I will put the word sinless in front of it. And I love to see sinless joy as the perfect harmony in man. I am grateful for all the good God is giving to man. And I will go on to see it in everyone!

  12. What a JOY all these daily lifts bring into our world ,thankyou Christian Scientists,ALL of ALL, of YOU.

  13. Your lift brought renewed freshness to a much read statement. I like the idea that sinless joy means pure joy with no conditions attached. Thank you for reminding me and all of us to have a sinless joy filled day.

  14. Thank you, Mary Alice Rose. Lovely qualities to think about.

  15. Many thanks Mary Alice for reminding us that: "Immortal Mind feeds the body with supernal freshness and fairness, supplying it with beautiful images of thought and destroying the woes of sense..."(S&H 248:8) "O dreamer, leave thy dreams for joyful waking,/ O captive, rise and sing, for thou art free;" (Christian Science Hymnal #202).

  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you for today's joyeous lift. I looked up the passage in S&H and wrote down the citation and qualities of man it gives us. What a blessing for today and everyday. Thank you, Joycebelle

  18. Thank you for this reminder of sinless joy.

  19. Peter Mark, Oh thank you for this message, what a wonderfull reminder to wake up too...

  20. Thank you.

  21. Sinless joy. What an absolute concept of purity. I am using this to idea to pray for U.S. drug users who fuel the drug traffic in Mexico, which causes so much crime here in the country where I live. Joy is sinless for all and does not need material substances to support it. True joy is based on the substance of Spirit.

  22. Great lift - thank you!

  23. Very timely message Mary Alice---thank you! Today, I will study this passage on p. 76 of S/H. And No. 21, Kathleen, thank you too for your thoughts. Drugs are so unnecessary, and actually destroy one's sense of harmony and well-being, the opposite of what people seek. And this is true of all sinfulness, which masquerades as good, but never delivers what it promises. These lifts are so GOOD! Thanks to all of you who are working to deliver these thoughts to us all.

  24. The citation in S&H you refer to reminds me of a thank you letter I received from a minister to whom I gave a copy of S&H. He wrote, "Every sentence in this book is like a sermon!"
Love and gratitude to one and all!

  25. Thanks so much, Mary Alice, for reminding us of Mary Baker Eddy's statement on sinless joy. Joy is so much deeper than just happiness and truly our sense of joy can only be sinless since it comes from God. #15 Malcolm quoted from my favorite hymn, except 412 is my favorite tune, and I especially like the second verse where it says, "He comes to give thee joy for desolation, Beauty for ashes of the vanished years; For every tear to bring full compensation, To give thee confidence for all thy fears."

This has been proved and demonstrated in my in my life so fully and my heart overflows with gratitude!

  26. Thank you Mary Alice. It is always comforting to be reminded that our joy is innate and cannot be taken from us.

  27. Thank you, Mary Alice - so clear and concise! You actually demonstrated how to take one statement from Science and Health and think it through and claim it for ourselves! And Thank you, Jane, UK, for your beautiful testimony. Sometimes it is hard to let go of the "self-image" that has been seemingly stamped on us by parents, family and just by going thru life. But Christian Science helps us to focus on our true identity and by doing this, the old, stale, sense of ourselves just falls away naturally. Onward and Upward! Love to All! XOXO!!!

  28. Wonderful , Thank You ! :-)

  29. Thank you for the fabulous reminder that sinless joy is our nature.

  30. Thank you for this Mary Alice. It has given me a broader view of this sentence's significance and I like the idea of starting our day with it. Sinless joy would erase over-eating, idleness, ingratitude, jealousy, vanity, destructive criticism, hate etc, all of wich are able to be destroyed because they are not part of our true indestructible being. (Thank you Jane, #7 above.)

  31. Sin – there is a word I could do without. It has such a dark history of man proclaiming evil as real and tenacious. Artists have had a field day with it. But “sinless joy” is quite a statement, isn’t it?

Sinless joy knows there is no “flip side” to good.

I love the playful young deer in our backyard, but even this simple joy is elevated when I think how life is spiritual and eternal, ever expressing divine freedom and never originating elsewhere.

Exactly #7, Jane - that joy!

  32. Is there any chance someone could translate number 10? I feel I miss their wonderful comments each day.

  33. Thanks, Mary Alice. I've just added the "sinless joy" excerpt to my daily prayer. Thanks, again.

  34. Thank you.

  35. Like Margaret from Australia, I, too, can remember the first time I came across this sentence. I was in high school at the time. Back then in English class we used to diagram sentences. If you remove all the modifiers, the subject, verb and predicate nominative of this sentence are: "...joy...constitutes...man." This became a life-defining idea, and shortly thereafter I was given "Joy" as a nickname. In the ensuing years, whenever I came across this sentence I would strip it down to "Joy constitutes man." What I love in this Lift is that, for me, Mary Alice has restored all those modifiers - all the sinlessness, beauty, goodness and perfection - and made it much more full. Mary Baker Eddy goes on in the following sentence to say: "This state of existence is scientific and intact, -- a perfection discernible only by those who have the final understanding of Christ in divine Science." Thank you, Mary Alice.

  36. Did you ever try to edit this sentence by Mrs. Eddy down to just three words -- one word subject, one word verb, and one word object? If you do, you'll be happily surprised!

  37. Thank you so much for this pure message, Mary!

  38. Just beautiful, thank you Mary Alice!

  39. Linda from Florida:
THANK YOU for such an uplifting idea. Can there be any REAL joy in sin? Absolutely not ! And this raises the standard of thinking and action to a higher sense of activity and thought.

  40. I think it might have been a 'Lifter' who wrote a comment about sin recently. It seems that an early usage of the word 'sin' hails from archery, and meant "to miss the mark." I love that idea. Regarding 'joy,' I have been struggling hard to see see this as deriving only and dependant only on Spirit. I think there is a wonderful scripture saying words to the effect, ' no man can take your joy from you.'
A wonderful Lift to start the week with - thank you Mary Alice et al.

  41. To #32 When I read the Lift I also open Google translate (mine defaults from Spanish to English, but you may need to set it) then I copy Spanish comments and paste into Google translate - it's not perfect, but you'll get the basic ideas and can make out the quotes. Thank you for this Lift on pure joy that is never fragile or compromised.

  42. Hello Mary Alice. I just love that citation from Science and Health. It really is one of my daily prayers. I have it posted in my kitchen. The thought of "sinless joy" is so healing and uplifting.Thank you so very much. Lots of love to you.

  43. Thank you, great lift!

  44. Lovely Lift. So helpful. Thank you.

  45. The substance of my being is "sinless joy without a single bodily pleasure or pain"! what a buoying thought! Thank you for sharing with those of us who enjoy these lovely lifts!

  46. Thanks!

  47. Man is constituted of joy! No darkness at all.

  48. Mary Alice: Really great quote to keep us focused upon what the REAL MAN/WOMAN is right now!..Thanks, Bob

  49. If only the people would belief that good is more contagious than evil, since God is Omnipresence, Mrs Eddy wrote in Miscellaneous Writings pg.229
The Daily Lift of today has inspired me to think that only the substance of our real spiritual being as sinless jjoy etc. is what can be contagious.
This, in relation with the supposed violence , and the belief of influenza here in Mèxico.
I`m more inspired to receive the Truth from the Thruth than what appears to be truth in our world today.
    Thanks, for your loving message.
    sincerely
    clarae.

  50. I love this. Thank you. What a certain peace to ponder and act upon.

  51. Thank you Mary Alice and all who respond. It's so inspiring the way people respond to one another. So many rich, useful ideas. Thanks Nate. We're off to a great week.

  52. Such a joy to hear this lift and to read all the comments. What a way to start each day! I especially want to thank #7 Jane, #21 Kathleen, and #35 Joy for adding much to think about.
    Thank you all so much

  53. Thanks Mary Alice.
'Sinless joy' just what our world needs to adhere to.

  54. I like to think of "sinless joy" as joy that comes when we are connected to God consciously. Of course we are always connected and at One with our heavenly Father but when we are out of the awareness of it and understanding our true identity as a spiritual being, there is lack of the real Joy that comes from the Source, Divine Love. I speak from having had the experience of this and am so grateful to have found my way back to being conscious, aware, thoughtful of my constant connection to God and my relationship with Him since I started listening and reading these Daily Lifts. I am very grateful to all the lecturers, producers and commentors. This has had a healing effect in my life. Thank you today for reminding me about true Joy and my real identity as spiritual.

  55. it was a few years ago that I actually felt "sinless joy" to the depths of my soul, recently I've been working through a healing and didn't realize how I'd given in to the unreliable claims of the senses - on levels of pleasure and pain, which hide the pleasures of the spirit - "sinless Joy" , thanks so much Mary Alice and all that have shared on this quiet knowledge of Truth and Love !

  56. Hi Mary Alice -- thanks so much for sharing a wonderful inspiration to start our day/week! Much love and gratitude!

    B.J.

  57. Thankyou dear Mary for that beautiful reminder of what we all are.

  58. Mary Alice,
Thank you so much for this wonderful Lift and to Jane #7 fantastic testimony, also to #'s 35 and 36 one Mind with but a single thought eh?
Fellow liftees, thanks to you all.
    Beannachd,
    Shelagh

  59. Thank you for this Lift. I have read that statement in S&H but never fully realized its content as I could never equate sin & joy. Having seen one of my relatives involved in drugs I now understand that he was looking for the joy that seemed to be lacking in his life. I will now to able ot pray for him in a better way knowing that he never has lacked anything and joy is his to manifest always. These Lifts are wonderful to start each day with and to ponder over.
Many thanks to all who bring us the "glad tidings"

  60. Thank you Mary Alice. Wonderful new approach to a familiar old quote from Mary Baker Eddy.

And Lifters-- what enlightening contributions so many of you have made!

    Thank you all.

  61. Resentment in response to what seems to be "painful criticism" has no reality (or life) in "sinless joy" - no lingering pain!
So grateful for these enlightening and healing "Lifts."
    Thank you, Mary Alice.

  62. What a wonderful inspiration to begin the day and week! To focus thought on "sinless joy", which is man's rightful heritage, truly does lift us. Thank you, Mary Alice and all.

  63. Thanks once more for opening my 'eyes' through the Daily Lift.

Gratitude also for #1-58 and others, for their correlative comments.

Several years ago, I was led to a pair of Sentinel articles of the same title, "Forgive and ye shall be forgiven". One contained the healing truth that helped me get over what seemed to be an inharmonious neighbor. Actually, it was I who harbored some, well, ah, let's say less than loving thoughts.

"Joy unspeakable, comes when we refuse to associate with anyone, the evils of material sense". I didn't invite him over for dinner, but I did stop harboring the bad thoughts about him. I've extrapolated this truth to include, anyone, any place, anything. It's NOT turning our back and walking away, but it IS a mental activity. What else is there?

Working with and applying these truths daily, is what makes us all 'spiritual millionaires.

    with much love, and gratitude,

    UJ

  64. Thank you Mary Alice for your inspiring daily lift for today, I certainly will cherish that thought
today, and thank you God for creating me and all your children in your image and likeness.

  65. I never really manufacture joy. "What is Truth?" Pilate said. Joy is like the wind. I always interpret joy as exultation when it happens. I understand it when it happens, but I don't create it. I wonder if joy is a vain ecstasy when it apppears. I really don't understand it, but I do view joy as a message from the Real. Joy really does countermand gloom & doom in my sight. I wish, hope, and pray to understood it better.

  66. I became aquainted with 3 exchange students from Brazil at our HIgh School. The one thing I noticed was their JOY in everything they did. Just before they went home I asked they what their impression of our little town"'one said we hate to asked you this, but why are the people so sad..".boy did that wake me up! sometimes it is the culture and or maybe the long winters, whatever, I knew it was not right and from then on let the faculty know and the other students that we need to work on our impression and express more love and joy.It was there all the time, we just needed to show it. Thy kingdom come, and let it be expressed in us.

  67. Joy such a strong word.. Just to hear this word does fill me with harmony and inspire me always... Well, now I am off today to conquer the world..

  68. I'm going to take you up on this daily prayer for a while, since this is exactly what I've been focusing on in other ways for the past year. I like the "sinless" part, which makes joy holy, permanent and constant, all true to our spiritual nature and heritage. Thank you for this. Very timely, very much loved.

  69. Dean (#65), feeling joy is a divine right. It is the expression of Life, Love, Soul -- all synonyms for God. We all express joy naturally because we are spiritual ideas of divine Mind. Man and woman reflect the joy of Soul. You are right, we don't create joy; God does! And God expresses it through us. It is a divinely natural blessing He bestows on us every moment. And He gives us the capacity to feel it and know it.

  70. Very good message, thank you so much!!!!

  71. Mary Alice, that is beautiful and applicable right now. Many thanks! I like to share one of my poems about Joy:

    Joy ©
    by Carlos (original in Spanish)

    The joy of living
Is not in a feverish world
    Neither in the material desire
    Nor in riches to come

    The joy of living
Is in the presence of God,
    Divine love that guides me
    On my endless journey,
    sinless,
    without suffering

    The joy of living
Is to enjoy and share good
    the eternal pleasure of loving
    God and man, endlessly.

  72. Unlike some of our Lifters, this passage has never been a favorite, although it's familiar.

I'm so happy to have it opened up with great meaning. I especially appreciate the commments related to drug/alcohol use, since I help those experimenting with these "substitutes" for actual joy. Since man is joy, they don't need a substitue.

The thought that man is sinless joy is so majestic. Thank you Mary Alice and each responder.

  73. I recall two times when I was surprised by spiritual joy, without any human reason for it. And that was in itself a joy.
Thanks for this lift, and for the comments following.

  74. I have found that I experience this "sinless joy" when I am focusing my experience on listening to and obeying God's direction each moment throughout the day. When I do this my day naturally goes so incredibly smoothly. And when I go to bed at night, and have been focusing my day like this, I feel this joy that is really hard to describe. It's like it wells up inside, and I just feel so happy and giddy. It's not because I feel like I'm giving myself a pat on the back for the great day I've just had. In fact, during these moments, I'm not even thinking about the direction of my day at all. It's just this amazing, indescribable happiness. I absolutely love it!!! I remember experiencing it when I was little - just feeling that childlike joy of being alive and loved. I'm grateful I still experience it as an adult, even with all of the pressures and demands that seem to come with adulthood.

  75. Mary Alice., I do appreciate being reminded of "sinless joy"!

  76. Lovely.....

    Thanks, Mary Alice

  77. Very beautiful, it is, listening to this!!!

  78. Thank you Mary Alice. We needed this today, however we listened to it a day late. It was never late as we needed it today... :)

  79. Thank you so much Alice for the nice lift.

  80. Joan NJ
Thanks Mary Alice Rose for your joyfull message and to all the Sinless commentators.
