2/4: God's original comfort food

2/4: God's original comfort food

  1. Thank you Kevin for this wonderful Lift. In Matthew 5:6 we read," Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Our desire for Truth is abundantly met through our study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Christian Science allows us to see that God's promises are kept. The dawning of the Christ in our thought provides us with assurance and comfort that nothing else can; the assurance that God is always with us-the most comforting thought on earth.

  2. Great comfort in this message. I thought you were going for the manna, but it really is the bread of life, which is Christ. Thanks Kevin.

  3. It's so good to hear every DL, there is always something helpful. Comfort food might be for me a noodle soup, but many times when I was under stress I looked for comfort in food. Nowadays I am praying to connect with God directly, because comfort comes from Spirit and food is supposed to nourish. Very often food is not a good companion to me, because I eat too much from something that is not helping me. If I am connected to Life; then I get the nourishment for me. Food could be related to ideas, with too many thoughts I get stressed like getting an indigestion with too much food and what was supposed to nourish my spirituality doesn't comfort the Spirit. Like you, Kevin, say "Spiritual satisfaction is coming from feeling God's love". Thank you very much for helping keeping this in Mind.

  4. Thank you Kevin. It got me thinking that this spiritual food must be our true supply now. manifested in so many ways, and that this same food was the nourishment that we received before we became conscious of matter, and it will remain our sustenance throughout eternity. Our ability to assimilate this heavenly food then becomes our true digestion and when as we are taking in this goodness we are able to truly share our meal with others. Mrs Eddy wrote:

Do you come to your little flock so filled with divine food that you cast your bread upon the waters? Then be sure that after many or a few days it will return to you.

Thanks again for explaining the comfort I receive from this spiritual food and today I will share this bread with others so that they might be filled with true comfort.

  5. Comfort food is the spiritual satisfaction that comes from feeling God's Love.
When we are lonely or even in despair, nothing comes close to make us feel warm inside, confident and ready to tackle any new challenge.
After the crucifixion the disciples were starved for their Master's touch, they needed comfort and they found it in his healing message.

  6. I've seen and experienced for myself some other ways that people look for comfort in matter. For example, entertainment such as television show, the social networks, and video games can be tempting to turn to, just as food is. But it never leaves us truly satisfied. After indulging in one of these artificial comforts and feeling empty afterwards, we turn back to the books by Mary Baker Eddy, her periodicals, and the Daily Lifts to find real comfort that lasts much longer because it gives spiritual satisfaction. The most important meal of the day for me is reading the weekly Bible lesson because it fills me with the spiritual ideas that will help me throughout the day. As you pointed out, Kevin, when we find ourselves hungering, our genuine comfort food is the "nourishing, joyful understanding of just how free, how perfect, and how satisfied we truly are." What could be more comforting than that understanding!

  7. Many thanks Kevin for pointing out that " We can always take comfort in knowing the spiritual truth of God's infinite [healing] love, no matter what our human circumstances are hungering for." "He knows the angels that you need,/ And sends them to your side,/ To comfort, guard and guide." (Christian Science Hymnal #9).

  8. Kevin,
    Thank you

  9. Thank you

  10. Dear Kevin,
this is a wonderful and practical idea: spiritual comfort food! Thank you for explaining this so beautifully!

  11. Thank you, Kevin. I did, indeed, need this spiritual comfort food.
    xoxo

  12. Thank you for a powerful lift. Thats the in-thing, food. Thank you again

  13. Thank you.

  14. Referring to one who was saved by Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy writes in "Footsteps of Truth" chapter in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "He learned that suffering and disease were self-imposed beliefs of mortals, and not the facts of being; that God never decreed disease, -- never ordained a law that fasting should be a means of health. Hence semi-starvation is not acceptable to wisdom, and it is equally far from Science, in which being is sustained by God, Mind." (page 221).

  15. Thank you for this verycomforting Lift, its makes my day.

  16. Thank you for the comforting message; it's great to start the day with the nourishing knowledge we are always fed.

  18. Thank you Kevin, for such an inspiring DL today! So beautifully expressed. And thanks to all the commenters.

  19. Thank you for this helpful thoughts about comfort food. There are many discussions about different kinds of food - good or bad -. You give me a spiritual individual answer with your words.

  20. Thank you for the reminder to view food from a spiritual standpoint. Our heavenly Father-Mother does feed us with spiritual understanding and spritual love. Translates to good food that we are grateful for, no starvation or overfeeding.

  21. Thank you, Kevin

  22. I love Renate's (#20) point about the ideal spiritual state in which there is no starvation AND no overfeeding -- just perfect balance.

And thank you, Darlyne (#6). Truly, nothing satisfies us like listening to God and obeying His angel messages. Most everything else is needless distraction.

Much gratitude for the daily bread we are given via these Lifts!

  23. "Bread of Heaven" Thank you Kevin

  24. Grateful that you shared these truths Kevin. Real sustaining truths!
    Tom S.

  25. Great food for thought to begin this day. Thank you

  26. Thank you for your thoughts. I am especially grateful that God is always with us and is our life. My son-in-law was protected in an avalanche while skiing in Colorado this weekend.

  27. Thank you--wonderful insights and comfort. I am grateful.

  28. "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." (Matt. 5:6) For they shall be filled with the bread of life from heaven, with the Truth that makes us free and satisfies as none other can. Thanks so much Kevin, the DL team, and all commenters for a gracious beginning of another week.

  29. Thank you, Kevin, for “God’s original comfort food … a favorite dish that’s nourishing, simple, and just really satisfying … it’s far more than just something good to eat … it’s the spiritual satisfaction that comes from feeling God’s love … ‘the great truth of spiritual being’” Kevin, you had me at “comfort food.” J My first thought was “our daily bread.” Today I’m going to focus on eating until I’m satisfied, as and even before I feel any hunger pains. I never really thought of The Comforter as offering “comfort food” before; but, it’s not only fun – it’s for real! Thanks again, Kevin!

  30. Thank you Kevin. And thanks for the additional ideas shared in # 4 and # 6.

  31. What a wonderful insight on our real source of comfort Kevin. Thank you so much for that insight.

As Mrs. Eddy wrote in her interpretation of the Lord's Prayer:
    Give us this day our daily bread;
Give us grace to-day; feed the famished affections.

I love it when these lifts give us perspectives of truth to replace the false ideas we come across in
daily life. This is certainly one of them. I will never think about "comfort food" in the same way again.

  32. "Give us this day our daily bread;
Give us grace for today; feed the famished affections."
    (Science and Health, p. 17)

God's grace pours down upon us: peace, understanding, love, gratitude, conviction, joy. This is our daily nourishment and our loving Father Mother God never lets us go hungry, but provides all we need daily.

    Thank you, God!

  33. Kevin, A perfect way to start the day....Thank you so much!
Thanks to #4 for comments about supply and sharing our spiritual food.

  34. Marie T. from Pau France
Thank you for your conforting message and for your french "bon appétit"

  35. Thank you for the wonderful lift. It just occurred to me that continuing to go over yesterday's challenges would be like eating "outdated" food.. We can just throw them out and partake of the "fresh".

  36. Just love this message and the comments that followed! I love your thought that God's comfort food is on today's Menue. Very clever and very helpful..thank you!

  37. Thank you!!!

  38. I wonder if my horse understands the reason I bring him sliced apples or carrots to top his meals. He clearly appreciates the comfort food, and it is my great joy to give it. But like us, if I turned him loose in an apple orchard, the whole comfort thing might turn sour.

Our spiritual comfort food and feeling warmly loved is no less provided to us and we should face the right direction, hang our head out of the stalls limitations, perk our ears forward, and accept the special delivery.

“We must receive the divine Principle in the understanding, and live it in daily life;” S&H 283:27

Yeah, "bon appétit" - thanks Kevin and all DLers

  39. Thank you, Kevin!

  40. Wonderful message... thank you so much!

  41. Thank you, Kevin. This is indeed comforting and needed with today's challenges.

  42. Thank you. God's provision to every one.

  43. Thank you for this comforting idea. We all need this nourishment everyday.

  44. "Fed by thy love divine we live, for Love alone is Life."

    MBE Hymn

  45. What a perfect message and timely for many of us who are told we need to improve! I have been asked to look at those things that truly nourish me-like sharing good times with family and friends, writing a poem, watching the wintering birds on the winter calm waters of the bay, attending a healing church service where I can sing with others and listen to live music that calms my soul.....It is a timely message and one that I very much appreciate hearing. Thank you Kevin Graunke for today's Daily Lift. From God's relentless care of me to a simple " Bon Apetit", I am guided to satisfaction in what God has to offer me today. Much appreciation. Donna

  46. Lovely! Actually, spiritually delicious. thanks.

  47. Thank you again Kevin. Knowing where our comfort comes from gives us peace.

  48. Thanks Kevin!
A nice slice of our "daily bread"

  49. In both the old and the New Testaments, the manna spoken of was not material food to quench the human stomach, but the revelation of the true food that quenches the human heart to understand and demonstrate God, the one and only who sustains us.

  50. Thank you Kevin! Just wonderful and what an inspiration! To Darlyne #6, Malcolm # 7, jbs #35 and all others, another thank you for your messages of love. We share in your blessing of joy BH-NH, #26!

  51. Our bread is the Truth... our wine is divine Love --- our "comfort food" -- the COMFORTER.

(Paraphrased from words in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy.)

  52. Thank you Kevin. Many times friends have discussed comfort food, each having a different dish that pleases them. God's spiritual comfort is so much better and can be had without sitting down to a table. Many times I've turned to the Psalms, a favorite hymn, or passages from S&H right when I need comforting. Love is right there and no cooking is required.
Thanks to all who provide this nourishment each day, Nate & team, lecturers, and commentors. You truly are the Bread of Life.

  53. Thanks Kevin, I love thinking of that last super as well as that breakfast on the Galilean sea, with this insightful twist on comfort food. Not to mention those meals which fed thousands. The Christ meeting every need, divine Love feeding the famished affections. What a wonderful light you've shined on the subject of true nourishment and satisfaction.

  54. Thank you, Kevin!

  55. Thank you again for the inspired thoughts to begin each day.

  56. Thank you.

  57. “Spiritual satisfaction from feeling God's love.” Truly, a nourishing thought. Thank you.

  58. Kevin, thanks for aliening the phrase "comfort food" with the ever present spiritual nourishment God provides 24/7...and beyond...and to think it's calorie free to boot!

  59. Thank you! We very often here phrases like "He's got a lot on his plate" "He's bitten off more than he can chew" etc The original meaning of the word 'diet' was 'mode of living' from the Greek 'diaita', so let's watch what we are 'taking in' (or being taken in by) and accept only what our loving Parent has prepared for us, the 'wholefoods' of spiritual ideas. I love Ruth's (#52) comment that we don't have to cook it up ourselves!

  60. Lots-of-food-for-thought re my/our true spiritual nourishment, very helpful --- thank-you, Kevin! Great 'eats'/comments today. DL Team, thanks for your spiritually nourishing work. Love/love to everyone.

  61. MERCI Kevin ! !!! Et vous ? ....

  62. Dear Keven, another wonderful thing this comfort food causes, is for us to bear good fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self- control. I do appreciate all the comments!

  63. Lovely! Better than Weight Watchers.

  64. Thank you Kevin for this new slant on comfort food. It reminds me of the letters I used to get from my grandmother when I was a child living in an isolated logging camp on Vancouver Island. My grandmother lived in Vancouver and was a faithful student of Christian Science who always showered me with care and kindness. I always loved getting her hand written letters, and realize now they were the kind of "comfort food" described in this Daily Lift. This might be a good place and to express my gratitude
to my grandmother, Beatrice Franks (Smith), for her steadfast supply of comfort food.

  65. Bon appetit, indeed! Thanks, Kevin

  66. Good lift. I've been starving for a taste of Grace Material world is too daunting, dissolute, unloving. I have to match the hunger with a supplication & a prayer for dominion. A taste of Grace is worth hecatombs of gushing theories. The lift's thought registers very clearly. Thank you again.

  67. What spiritual nourishment. Thank you Kevin.

  68. Thank you Kevin, for the spiritual enrichment. We need to watch and pray each day to keep our thoughts elevated. Mike

  69. Thank you.

  70. Thank you, Kevin! How interesting that the Bible has comfort food.

  71. Thank you so much for relating comfort food to the Comforter we have come to know as Christian Science. Every day we have a feast of the Bible Lesson, the periodicals, and some nice desserts, like the Daily Lift.

  72. I listened to this around 7:30 a.m. today and I thought, what a truthful and insightful lift. Now, at 11:33 p.m., I can say I had three opportunities today to find comfort in food, and each time this good lift came back to my thought. I found comfort in God. Thanks!

  73. Thanks, Kevin and I appreciate all of the comments.

  74. Great lift! This sense of being fully nourished and comforted, by God and his angels, is so important in our daily work for ourselves and our world. Thank you Kevin.

  75. I love this! Thank you, Kevin, for this beautiful thought, and all the Lifters for your wonderful contributions.

  76. Kevin, thanks for your lovely message about true comfort food. Your Daily Lifts are always appreciated.

  77. Fantastic Daily Lift. Thank you ever so much, Kevin.

  78. The Truth is "our bread 'which cometh down from heaven."(S&H) The embodiment of this Truth is Christ Jesus, and as long as we walk in his footsteps, and seek his Truth, even "with bleeding footsteps,"(S&H) he promises us, "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."(John)

    Thank you Kevin
    Thank you DL community

  79. Perfect, free and satisfied! Thanks Kevin!

  80. Thanks so much--something to remember each day!

  81. Thank you Kevin,
