Thank you! Thank you!! This is one of my favorite hymns and today's DL couldn't be more appropriate. It has been a difficult few days since Friday. I knew that I needed to gain clarity so that I could pray effectively for others. Today's DL hit home. I am very grateful for these daily lifts and for Christian Science. May God's loving thoughts (his angels) bless all in need of comforting today and every day.

Thank you John for this much needed Lift in response to the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn. I know that much purposeful and prayerful work is being done in helping to clarify and lift thought above mortal sense. These precious children of God are right now being tenderly cared for and nurtured as they are forever held in the arms of Divine Love. I look to Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health page 519, (found in last weeks Bible Lesson): "Thus the ideas of God in universal being are complete and forever expressed, for Science reveals infinity and the fatherhood and motherhood of Love." Thank you again for your good work.

Hug, love, and comfort one another; no one is left out, not from doing this or experiencing this...
Jesus was talking a series of parables in Matt 25 and in verse 34 he speaks of a King who speaks to those gathered on his right hand and says, "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: in prison, and ye came unto me: "
And questioning the King as to when they did these things unto him:
"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily, I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
Mrs Eddy says, “Love giveth to the least spiritual idea might, immortality, and goodness, which shine through all as the blossom shines through the bud.”
So we are all, as God's individualized expressions, worthy, valuable, contributing, important, loved, loving, and lovely, and we are "brethren."
It is our duty to demonstrate these things before, during, and after a tragedy; it is God's love for us made practical in our daily lives, no one left out, ignored, passed over, left alone, left behind..
Only love to the DL community..

Thank you John Adams. Every comforting thought counts. I can feel the sincerity in your message. No thinking person can remain unmoved in the face of this senseless violence. We all need the comfort and new outlook that the Christ can bring to our hearts. Jesus was a human whose love of the Christ was so profound that their identities became inseparable. The Christ, God's man, is an eternal glorifying presence. We can all identify ourselves with the deathless, healing Christ, as was proven by the prophets, by the disciples of Jesus, as testified by the discoverer of this Christ Science, Mary Baker Eddy and her followers. Let's pour more of this leaven of the Christ into our own hearts, and into the atmosphere of mortal thinking until the plague of mental illness is destroyed.

When a crime is committed against children, it touch us all. Fear, doubt of our neighbors, uncertainty, takes over our thinking and we feel vulnerable.
But we find strength in Christ, Truth itself, He embeds us in the rock that is “Christ, My refuge” (MBE’s Poem.)
The heart of Christ, who loves, strengthens and supports us eternally, will not break under the weight of human sorrow and will lift all above the darkness of this moment.

Dear John,
I am looking out of my office window at a group of wood pigeons roosting in the top of two barren trees, peacefully awaiting the activity of the new day, but for the moment simply resting in the now. The dark clouds, which have brought us nothing but snow, rain, fog and darkness these last few days are breaking apart, letting through the first glimpses of blue sky, silver lined with the light of the morning sun. It fits your Lift perfectly - although all seems still, with nothing happening, the promise of day and productive activity is there, not as something far of in the future, but imminent, due to happen today! For the moment, however, there is time for stillness, even sorrow; that time is now. But see there, geese are flying overhead towards the rising sun, already moving. So let us move forward also, toward a new day, a good day!

Love from the Father and Mother of us all is the only real peace which redeems and heals all human woes. We may not understand the "why" but those children are all right now being embraced and soothed, "Fed by thy love divine we live for love alone is life;"- and their parents, families and friends are all included in this promise- "And life most sweet, as heart to heart speaks kindly, when we meet and part."
Muchas gracias John.

Christ is our refuge - everyone's - and this is such a comforting thought. As someone was lamenting on the news all that these children would be missing - proms, marriage, etc. - I thought these children aren't missing anything as their lives are continuing in love, peace, harmony, joy - where there is no evil. Life is eternal and all existence is spiritual untouched by material events. And in thinking about the parents Hymn 412 came to mind:
The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking,
Unloosing bonds of all captivity.
He comes to bless thee on his wings of healing,
To banish pain, and wipe all tears away;
He comes anew, to humble hearts revealing
The mounting footsteps of the upward way.
He comes to give the joy for desolation,
Beauty for ashes of the vanished years;
For every tear to bring full compensation,
To give the confidence for all thy fears.

Thank you John, for your heartfelt compassion and strength. Prayer will bring the needed changes. Today with our second son and his children we enjoyed a wonderful lunch together. God had certainly gone ahead and prepared the way. This lunch would have been impossible three years ago, but love was present with each one. On the way home we played "I spy. . . " the letter was f, and it was inside the car. Almost all of inside the car. We came to this Village and were ready to "Give up. . . " but as we arrived and got out to say Goodbye, Darcii said it was "family"! God speaks to our children, and our children hear. Our beloved Father-Mother brings broken families and broken hearts together, reunites and reawakens them with love and lovingkindness, and we can pray for others that they too, will be healed and tenderly shown a better way forward.
Thank you Nathan and the production team; the Board of Lectureship;and the lecturers; and the almost Christmas Daily Lifters!

Thank you, John, for “Christ my refuge … ‘And o'er earth's troubled, angry sea I see Christ walk, And come to me, and tenderly, Divinely talk.’ … even now … ‘Thus Truth engrounds me on the rock, Upon Life's shore, 'Gainst which the winds and waves can shock, Oh, nevermore!’ …” For the first time, I understand in these verses, the spirit of the First and Second Commandments as “the rock” upon which healing can happen. “I see Christ walk” calls my attention to “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” To keep focused on God/Good even (and especially!) when it seems humanly impossible in the wake of terribly tragic events. And “shock, Oh, nevermore!” calls my attention to “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” We have seen and heard, in news coverage about this terribly tragic event, images that would be engravened on our hearts and minds that might keep us “frozen in our tracks” towards progress in honoring and protecting innocence and purity, courage and care giving, every day. I will not let these children and adults, have died in vain. I will prayerfully and actively promote in our society, qualities of character that can prevent such terribly tragic events. “My prayer, some daily good to do To Thine, for Thee; An offering pure of Love, whereto God leadeth me.” (Thank you, Mrs. Eddy, for reminding us that, indeed, Christ is our refuge – no matter what!)

How quickly we must move from appearances to reality!
Human experience may not be the best teacher, but God certainly is. Christ as the manifestation of divine Love comes to us always to guide, comfort, and lift us higher than we were aware we needed to go.

Thank you, John, for that clear reminder of the Christ presence that brings a sense of love, comfort, mercy, and direction.
Now that we have received this clear spiritual view, I trust that our prayers for the community of Sandy Hook will make available in that community and the surrounding areas the spiritual resources to support the families, the school, the government, and the first responders.
If prayer leads our church members in Connecticut to volunteer in the community, to bring food to a family, to hug them, to share a message of compassion and hope via pulling together an appropriate or newly written lecture in direct support of the community, then those steps should be taken with courage and care.
Our hearts, and the world, have been wonderfully touched and lifted by this Daily Lift, and we must also pay the love forward in actions and words the community can feel and understand.

No ill..." Mother's Evening Prayer, by Mary Baker Eddy.

I love the comments of Beatrix #15. Thank you.
M.B.Eddy often puts together REASON and REVELATION. I always loved this combination. And I now feel that I have to pray deeper about the necessity of Reason in our daily life; and that it should gain some place and space in our decisions, and that we should know that divine revelation still wants us to follow human laws (like following the street laws) and the discipline of wearing only the divine arms of love. None else.

Thank you so much, John, and all who have commented today.
On Friday's list of comments, Gary (see #9 today, and I believe it was #37 on Friday) wrote that he was understanding his 5-month old grandson's individuality as already at the standpoint of complete development (taking the spiritual view of God's creation). One of the fathers who spoke on national television seemed to have a similar view of his daughter: He spoke of his parenthood in the present tense (a permanent gift that he cannot be deprived of) and of her qualities as quite mature, i.e., very Christly.
This is true also of all children, whatever our age: No one's development or parenting can be cut off or subverted...because development is already complete. God's ideas are whole and permanent. We are gifts forever. And nothing can thwart the giving of our gifts. May your gifts go out with power and grace today...with healing.

I, too, will share this beautiful "Daily Lift" with family and friends who are not active participants in the Christian Science church. My favorite hymn has always been #139, "I walk with Love along the way, And O, it is a holy day; No more I suffer cruel fear, I feel God's presence with me here; The joy that none can take away Is mine; I walk with Love today." In the Christmas Card I created to send family and friends this year I have featured a local California light house with this quote from Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven."

Thank you Peter #59, for bringing out the necessity of expressing our love and help in ways that are simple and can be understood. Instead of focusing on my problems I need to extend love and comfort, and support to those dear ones suffering because of this incident. Thank you John for your comforing thoughts and love. I will stay with this wonderful lift today.

Beautiful, John. So gentle. So caring. So strong.
What is compassion? It's in John's message. Tender mercy AND healing words.
Unable to attend my local Church services yesterday, I tuned in to the Mother Church service online. I was touched with the readers' focus on comfort and healing in not only the announcements from the desk but in the Scriptural selections and the hymns.
What a blessing the gift of Christian Science is!

Thank you for this loving response to such a horrifying tragedy. Each day it seems as though new waves of sorrow assault human thought as shock turns into feelings that span the spectrum of human emotions. I found this Daily Lift a great comfort and strengthening standpoint to lift my prayers to the reach the tones of Mind that sends healing thoughts to all.

I cannot let this day go by without expressing my gratitude for this comforting lift and to all who comment. I am tenderly holding all of God's dear children (which includes adults) in my prayers and seeing each one as forever complete. No one can be outside of Divine Love's embrace. The hymns are such a wonderful source of comfort and inspiration for me, too. I get so much out of these Daily Lifts and refer back to them often as I don't want to miss any comments. Many, many thanks and much love to all.

'Spot on,' John. Your message could not have been more compassionate, yet it is spoken with spiritually scientific certainty - straight from its source of divine Life and Truth and Love, thus bringing a healing message to all listening - and beyond - encompassing and blessing all. Thank you, dear John, for your clear, spiritual vision, and for sharing it with us and all mankind.
Love it!

What strikes me about today's comments is their worldwide nature: Lifters from Germany, UK, Pakistan, Mexico, Canada and many more, as well as so many different states in America. We are all "family" with those living in the community of Newtown: their children are our children. As we unite in prayer, we feel the confidence of knowing that our prayers are answered, and that all may feel the comfort of God's presence, here and now. Dear residents of Newtown, Conn.: You are not alone! You are loved and cherished!

Thank you to everyone for the wonderful thoughts and ideas for praying about this tragedy.
These are the thoughts I would like to share. As we are all created by God, we are all His creatures, and Mrs. Eddy says on page 514 line 28:- "All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible". I find this also helpful in thinking not only about the victims and their families, but in praying to understand that the poor misguided culprit is also created by God in His image, and I would like to understand more clearly that God knows nothing of this picture which the mortal thought is portraying, and that He has never been absent. Everyone, including the culprit, needs to feel the wonderful all-encompassing Love of our true Father-Mother God so that we can find the spiritual reality which wipes out the whole thing from our consciousness. We are all the beloved children of God and He is always with us protecting and guiding and blessing us all.
I am sure all our prayers are going out to help and heal.

Robert Krueger Florida I know what it's like to be touched by the Christ. I retired from my business in 1980 about 2 months after I retired I went to bed one night & when I tried to lay down I felt sharp pains in my chest by my heart & could not take a deep breath without pain & my left side was very numb . I was a student of Christian Science & always turned to God for healing as this appeared to be all the symptoms of a heart attack. I called C. S. Practitioner to pray for me while she was praying for me I felt a strong warm feeling in the area of my heart & I could take a deep breath without pain & my left side was no longer numb. There was no doubt in my mind that I had been touched by Christ;s Healing Love I pray to know that , that same Love that healed me Heals the hearts & minds of all parents , children, loved ons neighbors &friends & all the little children that seemed to have died , because they remain alive in God's Great Love that He has for all His children P S thank you John Adams for your healing lift

Many thanks for this. Not sure the berieved will want to sing the jolly carol 'God Rest you Merry Gentlemen' when they've just lost their six year old, but I understand the sentiment expressed. We must be very careful with people berieved, many of whom are Christians but not Christian Scientists as some of us may be. We need to put ourselves in some of those people's shoes and be human as well.

Thank you John and all. I also wish to add that there is NO mental illness to drive any to the insanity we see in this act. Mental illness is the belief that there is more than one Mind, God, and that we are not driven by this devil, evil, falsity. We need to overcome this dis-ease and free those loved ones of God.

With a heart filled with gratitude for your precious and powerful message, I offer a simple but sincere, thank you, John, for sharing these truths with us all today. Healing is going on right now, right where tragedy seemed to strike. God's Love comforts all.

Mrs. Eddy is specific. She writes, "There was never a moment in which evil was real. This great fact concerning all error brings with it another and more glorious truth, that good is supreme. As there is none beside Him, and He is all good, there can be no evil. Simply uttering this great thought is not enough! We must live it, until God becomes the All and Only of our being. Having won through great tribulation this cardinal point of divine Science, St. Paul said, 'But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.' " ( "Is There A Personal Devil?" in No and Yes pages 22-25. By our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.)

Thank you all. Every one of your right and true thoughts is healing and comforting.
Here's what I was thinking: Father-Mother God is loving all. I am knowing that the moment the children in the Newtown tragedy were seemed to be shot, they were instantly caught up to God, and embraced in a love that surpasses anything we know - that washed away every vestige of fear and pain. They are cared for with unimaginable tenderness. For them, all is well - very well. The heartbreak is those still here who can no longer see and hold their children in the traditional sense. God, may they feel your loving comfort, for you are holding us all. I am comforted by this poem by Eddy that I have recited and sang for myself and my children all our lives:
O gentle presence, peace and joy and power;
O Life divine, that owns each waiting hour,
Thou Love that guards the nestling's faltering flight!
Keep Thou my child on upward wing tonight.
Love is our refuge; only with mine eye
Can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall:
His habitation high is here, and nigh,
His arm encircles me, and mine, and all.
O make me glad for every scalding tear,
For hope deferred, ingratitude, disdain!
Wait, and love more for every hate, and fear
No ill, — since God is good, and loss is gain.
Beneath the shadow of His mighty wing;
In that sweet secret of the narrow way,
Seeking and finding, with the angels sing:
"Lo, I am with you alway," — watch and pray.
No snare, no fowler, pestilence or pain...etc.

All of these tradgedies that are happening now symblize the destruction of material thinking that's seemingly going on. It behooves us to not let these tragedies tear us down, as if our prayers are not working. That's what error wants, and when we are able to not let it bother us by knowing; "Thank God, it never happened." This is not being cold, it enables us and man to overcome these horrors.

- 12/17/2012Thank you John for this much needed Lift in response to the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn.
Steve Hopewell, NJ
- 12/17/2012Hug, love, and comfort one another; no one is left out, not from doing this or experiencing this...

- 12/17/2012Thank you John Adams.
Elena Shideler, California (San Diego)
- 12/17/2012When a crime is committed against children, it touch us all.

- 12/17/2012Dear John,
I am looking out of my office window at a group of wood pigeons roosting in the top of two barren trees, peacefully awaiting the activity of the new day, but for the moment simply resting in the now.

Muchas gracias John.

- 12/17/2012Christ is our refuge - everyone's - and this is such a comforting thought.
He comes to bless thee on his wings of healing,
To banish pain, and wipe all tears away;
He comes anew, to humble hearts revealing
The mounting footsteps of the upward way.
He comes to give the joy for desolation,
Beauty for ashes of the vanished years;
For every tear to bring full compensation,

- 12/17/2012Thank you John, for your heartfelt compassion and strength.

- 12/17/2012Thank you, John, for “Christ my refuge … ‘And o'er earth's troubled, angry sea I see Christ walk, And come to me, and tenderly, Divinely talk.’ … even now … ‘Thus Truth engrounds me on the rock, Upon Life's shore, 'Gainst which the winds and waves can shock, Oh, nevermore!’ …” For the first time, I understand in these verses, the spirit of the First and Second Commandments as “the rock” upon which healing can happen.

- 12/17/2012How quickly we must move from appearances to reality!
Human experience may not be the best teacher, but God certainly is. Christ as the manifestation of divine Love comes to us always to guide, comfort, and lift us higher than we were aware we needed to go.
Thanks #33 for reminding us of Hymn 174. Mother's comfort is right there, not to be missed by anyone.

- 12/17/2012Thank you, John, for that clear reminder of the Christ presence that brings a sense of love, comfort, mercy, and direction.

None else.

- 12/17/2012Thank you so much, John, and all who have commented today.

- 12/17/2012I, too, will share this beautiful "Daily Lift" with family and friends who are not active participants in the Christian Science church.

- 12/17/2012What strikes me about today's comments is their worldwide nature: Lifters from Germany, UK, Pakistan, Mexico, Canada and many more, as well as so many different states in America.

- 12/17/2012Thank you to everyone for the wonderful thoughts and ideas for praying about this tragedy.

- 12/17/2012Robert Krueger Florida I know what it's like to be touched by the Christ.

- 12/17/2012Many thanks for this. Not sure the berieved will want to sing the jolly carol 'God Rest you Merry Gentlemen' when they've just lost their six year old, but I understand the sentiment expressed. We must be very careful with people berieved, many of whom are Christians but not Christian Scientists as some of us may be. - 12/17/2012Thank you John and all. I also wish to add that there is NO mental illness to drive any to the insanity we see in this act. With a heart filled with gratitude for your precious and powerful message, I offer a simple but sincere, thank you, John, for sharing these truths with us all today. Healing is going on right now, right where tragedy seemed to strike. God's Love comforts all.

- 12/17/2012Mrs.

- 12/18/2012Thank you all.
O gentle presence, peace and joy and power;
Beneath the shadow of His mighty wing;
In that sweet secret of the narrow way,
Seeking and finding, with the angels sing:
"Lo, I am with you alway," — watch and pray.
No snare, no fowler, pestilence or pain...etc.

- 12/18/2012All of these tradgedies that are happening now symblize the destruction of material thinking that's seemingly going on. It behooves us to not let these tragedies tear us down, as if our prayers are not working. That's what error wants, and when we are able to not let it bother us by knowing; "Thank God, it never happened." This is not being cold, it enables us and man to overcome these horrors.

- 12/29/2012Somehow I missed this DL and found it today, thank you so much for those uplifting ideas. All our prayers must continue to go forth to support those who face tragedy at all times of the year. But we need to hold those in New Town especially in our hearts and prayers this holiday season. Thank you for these inspiring words.
