11/8: We are always able

11/8: We are always able

  1. Thank you John for this great Lift. God not only gives us the strength to overcome error and its many false beliefs, but also the confidence to face and defeat these claims. In the words of Mary Baker Eddy, "we have strength in proportion to our apprehension of the truth.." Mrs. Eddy gave a good illustration, in S&H page 378. of what happens when we look these false claims square in the face when she said."A man's gaze, fastened fearlessly on a ferocious beast, often causes the beast to retreat in terror. This latter occurrence represents the power of Truth over error,-the might of intelligence exercised over mortal beliefs to destroy them;"

  2. "God is faithful; He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond that which ye are able to bear" I Corinthians 10:13

When we trust the Lord -and relax the tension knowing we dwell in the secret place of the most High- Psalm 91:1, we’ll find that no matter how big the wave that threaten us… God is right there to lift us up to a safe place.

  3. Thank you so much for this uplifting thought, I will go through the day on the 'crest of a wave'.

  4. Thank you!

  5. I love this lift. When we approach a challenge with the knowledge that God has give us dominion over all the earth and that He is with us at all times, we can feel very safe and enjoy overcoming the challenge.
However, we don't set ourselves up for such a big challenge until we have tackled the smaller ones, and gained the confidence and skill of utilising that dominion - feeling the ever presence of God with us guiding us and supplying us with whatever we need to be triumphant. If a big challenge presents itself to us in a different form unexpectantly, we have the confidence that whatever the challenge, the same Principle is at work for us, giving us all the courage and ability to succeed. What a freeing thought - Immanuel - God with us to enable us at all times and in all ways.

I look forward to hearing all the other comments - I find such inspiration in all of them.

  6. Many thanks John for this inspiring lift for moments of challenge. Yes. "We can feel the presence of God's love lifting us imperceptibly just as high as we need to be able to meet the challenge." "Though storm or discord cross my path/ Thy power is still my stay,...Thy angels bring release,/ For still Thy presence is with me,/ And Thou dost give me peace." (Christian Science Hymnal #136).

  7. A such a good example for us to face the "foe" and see that the "foe" has disappeared right before our eyes. Thank you, John.

  8. I was suffering from a belief of a cold after a long airplane fight from israel. I am facing this error knowing that I can rise above discomfort by remaining.calm in face of this wave of error. Thank you for your help.

  9. Dear John,
Thankyou so much for this. Just before listening to the Lift, I was contemplating how one can learn to maintain God, harmony, in consciousness at all times, and pay no heed to mortal mind speak. How good to know that God lifts me into that consciousness of Her love whenever I have a challenge to meet.
    Bless you!

  10. Thank you. How true the message from the Bible [Deuteronomy 33:25], that God gives us strength according to our day.

  11. Thank you, John, for “We are always able … we can never meet a problem too big for us … ‘ye can never be tempted above what ye are able’ …” Accepting these statements as representing the Truth of being, the Truth of MY being, I can go forward, as Christian Science teaches, experience by experience, prayerfully considering HOW I am able. Not IF I am able. HOW I am able, and in my ability, following through. It’s not only comforting, but also empowering to live in the HOW. I love your fearless approach to canoeing safely, intelligently, and joyfully with that triumphant spirit of “HOW!” As even the big “waves” come towards my own little "canoe," I am, thanks to your Lift, more inspired than ever to stay in the HOW of prayers like, “What will you have me to do?” and “What is the most love thing I can do?” I, too, can prove every wave as just another opportunity to overcome. No IF’s about it! It's a courageous approach; but, not cavalier. It’s actually living, as God’s children are called to live - trusting the guidance and protection of God’s laws of Divine Love as our only authority. The ONLY “powers that be.” That’s all the power I/we ever need or really have! Unceasing prayer. Unwavering obedience. Healing happens. So, life as a Christian Scientist is like canoeing fearlessly, even into and safely through the huge waves, proving that “God is bigger than huge.” What an adventure!

  12. Thank you for this great Lift knowing that Our Father is always there to lift us up and over all obstacles and we are then safe in His hands.

  13. John you have precisely described body surfing! We were such snobs when we were young, we wouldn't go into water that didn't have rolling breakers. And if there aren't offshore islands the breakers can be awesome, even a bit daunting. At Christmas when the King tides are rolling in, and they soon will be - facing the first wave tends to keep us on the beach for a little while. But once we dive into the first oncoming breaker, the rest is easy. I love the watery Lifts! We learned so many lessons from the ocean. Such as quietly turning to God when someone is making very loud and aggressive demands. Best to face it head on, and just let love lift both of you to a better - calmer - place and let the anger pass harmlessly by.
Thank you Nate and the production team; the Board of Lectureship and the lecturers; and the Daily Lift family.

  14. Beautiful, just beautiful. I too feel encouraged to think about the HOWs. Feeling sure that God will never put me in a situation above what I am able to bear. No more : Why Dear God? Instead, I will wait for Him to show me How will I go through the huge waves that arise sometimes before me. Thank you John and thanks to all the commentators.

  15. What an encouraging lift, thank you so much. It reminds me of what Mrs Eddy says about launching our bark on page 254 of Science and Health.

  16. Dear John: this reminds me of a similar adventure on a tempestous summer night. But above all it is everyday's adventure, when we face what sometimes appears to us to be challenges that are just too much for us. Thank you for this wonderful quote from Paul that there is not a single temptation that cannot be met by our knolwedge and certitude that we are able because "He/She" is able. But for this, as your canoe experience exemplifies, we need to "point right onto the wave" for it to smoothly break on either side ot the canoe. We need to be spiritually ready to just as smoothly face apparent challenges, and see that not only we can meet them safely and comfortably but that they also "lift us up", like the high wave. Thank you for this reminder, which I really needed today.

    Muchas gracias John

  18. I love this reminder. Thank you so much.

  19. Thank you so much a gorgeous message very true and inspiring.Healing is always available and present

  20. Thank you.

  21. This has always been a favourite promise...Thank you John for adding another dimension to it. The Father does raise us up, metaphorically scooping us up in His embrace. Love pervades this and every Daily Lift --- what a gift to all :-). Best wishes from Bedford, UK.

  22. Love it. Made me think of Mrs Eddy's "Satisfied"... Hymn 160... "God able is to raise up seed - in thought and deed - to faithful His" . Works for canoes too!!! Thanks!!!

  23. thank you John, for a great lift. helps me to face a challenge head on.

  24. Thank you for this lovely Lift and for all the additional comments. Facing an 'overlong' car journey of some thousands of kilometres at the 'wrong' time of year (a big wave!) I am very grateful for your encouragement to face directly into it and let God's ability carry me up and over it. God is All in all and over all, and error is dust, nothingness, so even as it calls itself our fearful thought, it is incapable of getting off the ground or living up to itself, and must fall harmlessly and painlessly away from our experience. Thank you.

  25. Great reminder that we have dominion

  26. Thanks, John, for just the thought needed for today - and always. I have this short little quote from an article in the Journal of August 2012 that was called "Jesus' wilderness experience" which I have found very helpful, "I am fully equipped to meet each of life's challenges. Right now!"

Another quote I have is from a Daily Thought Journal Article "Am I receptive to healing?" of October 10, 2012: "Putting material self out of thought, and silently and consistenly declaring the spiritual nature of all creation, prepares us for the inspiration that heals. As Jesus put it: "Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things up when the times comes." (Matthew 6:34, Eugene Peterson, The Message.)"

How comforting it is to know that we are always able and fully equipped to face all of life's challenges through our trust in and total reliance on God.

  27. John,
Thanks for the great lift...what a beatuiful idea...lifted up to meet the challange...lifted by Gid. As His children, he loves and care for us ALL.!
    Thanks for the reminder, John!

  28. Thank you.

  29. Isn't it wonderful that Divine Love is meeting our every need, and that all mankind can know it. This lift has "lifted" me up. Thank you so much! As I look out my window there is a glorious sunrise, what a gift.... a glorious day is dawning. Thank you John and all who have shared.

  30. What truly wonderful lessons you illustrated in your canoe. We too can face up to and then face down seeming insurmountable problems as they arise before us. How important it is to spiritualize our thought as Mrs. Eddy knew and shared with us. Thank you so much for this clear reminder.

  31. John, Great lift and so needed! I love the idea of facing "the wave' directly, whatever it may be, instead of turning aside to it and posssibly getting swamped by it. Like in your canoe--if we face a problem directly--and overcome the temptation to believe that it must drown out our God-given ability to "command the wave,"*we can rise above the problem instead of letting our boat 'get swamped'. Thanks!

    {see Science and Health, pg#570:24-25}

  32. I hear this quote from First Corinthians pretty often from friends who are from other Christian denominations. I know they find it comforting to think of it as meaning God walks with them through whatever trouble they're in. But, how wonderful to be able to prove, as so many of us have, that we can replace the word "bear" with the word "overcome" and experience healing. That is the highest sense of Divine comfort!

  33. Great lift! One benefit of understanding one's ability is supported by divine Love is the resulting willingness to "face the wave." Knowing Principle supports our actions gives us the willingness to do as Moses did and handle the serpent, allowing us to see erroneous suggestions as a staff upon which we can build strong and healthy conditions. Ask yourself, "Am I willing to face the challenge looming in front of me today with confidence and assurance that comes from understanding my oneness with God?" If so, those waves will turn into uplifting support as one journey's across the waters. With Odysseus, that Greek hero, I say, "Bring the trial on!"

  34. This is a lovely lift. My grandma loved her canoe and loved to go into the San Francisco bay in it. She taught me this lesson that you have shared and I love how you have applied it to a spiritual lesson. When I am distraught, certainly there is something to be learned. Yet, distraught, I am not open to what God has in store for me. Get material self, personality, out of the way, turn to God. I like the way this is expressed, Lori, give silent and consistent thought to the spiritual nature of all creation....give my entire attention to what God is doing right now...do not get worked up @ what may or may not happen tomorrow. Hmmm....that is very helpful. Thank you dear spiritual lift community from near and far...I love what you have to offer and find this venue so helpful to lifting my thoughts to a better place. May we all find the freedom of joy in this day. God wants this for us all.

  35. Thank U, John,

I'm always knowing I am ready for the next step with God

  36. thank you john

  37. Thank you. I needed focus and to not feel overwhelmed this morning and this Lift got me on track and the comments, too, inspired me to stop and pray specifically about that swell of anxiety. Special thanks to #26 Lori in CA.

  38. Thank you, John, for the image of canoeing through breakers!

Holding my canoe perpendicular to the oncoming line of mortal beliefs means I'm less exposed. They have to slide alongside, while I go forward. I think that unceasing prayer--the real prayer that silences personal will, rivalry, and fear--is the way for me to take that position today. Straight ahead, with thoughts tuned to God. It takes a bit of attention, right? But what a thrill to stream down the smooth back of the wave. A Hallelujah moment.

  39. Thank you for this Daily Lift which lifted my thought just as the waves lifted your canoe, John.

  40. Thank you, John...couldn't help but think of Mrs Eddy's words in S&H 254:27 which begin: If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms..."

We can say to the "proud wave" of mortal mind suggestion, "Thus far and no farther" (see S&H 124:20).

  41. Thank you John. So timely and comforting and powerful. Thanks everyone for sharing and thanks to the Lift team.

  42. So grateful fo this Lift today. Thank you.
    Tom from Mi.

  43. Thank you.I think I will always remember your canoe..and this encouraging lift.

  44. This is a cool lift! The cut-right-through-the-wave-be-uplifted allegory I have just jotted down in my notebook as a reminder for rough sea ahead. Thanks so much!

  45. Each year the winter/snow seems harder to deal with. Now I know that no matter what the condition God will meet my needs as He always has. I can enjoy the beauty of the season knowing I can meet any challenge it might bring. Thank you John for this wonderful insight and encouragement. Thanks also to the Lifter team, both on production side and comment side. You are all loved and needed.

  46. Thank you.I am going to remember your canoe when faced with a challenge...a most comforting and encouraging lift.

  47. Thanks John,
what a great way to face right into the problem -- knowing God is right here
and we won't get swamped with the "wave" whatever the challenge is called --
God is giving what we need right there!
Then we can paddle down the back side of it!
Thanks to the whole Lift family for your thoughts too!

  48. thank you for reminding us of this truth fact - these daily lifts are such a wonderful expansion of our daily communion with our Father Mother God, and help us to be better citizens, friends, family members, neighbours, workers. I am truly grateful for all the good we are blessed with day by day.
    sincerely,

  49. So grateful fo this Lift today. Thank you.
    Tom from Mi.

  50. Thank you, John. This evening I will be facing a challenge and the thoughts you spoke were exactly what I needed to hear.

  51. ...and as Joy (#47) and #48 reminded me: thanks to the "whole lift family."

  52. Thank you, When you listen for Her voice, she will direct you, nothing is to difficult for God.

  53. Many years ago our family did a sailing trip that started with a large sea on our bow. The effect was quiet alarming as the boat hit the water and shuddered just after cresting the wave. It was our first sail of more than twenty four hours and as night fell and the pounding continued my husband remarked that this was not good for the rigging and he was going to change our destination and alter course. The effect was dramatically more pleasant. We seemed to be slightly angled to the wave and the boat glided over like a knife through butter. We still to this day call that perfect angle to the wind and the waves " the grove". It is a place of comfort not taking your destination into account. Placing yourself in Gods destination has the same effect.

  54. Wonderful Wonderful !!!! Thank you! :-)

  55. This reminded me of the eagle and the way it uses the storm. The eagle goes headfirst into the windy blasts and is lifted up above the turbulence and glides on the updrafts. It takes courage for us to do this, but our example is before us. The stories in the Bible show this and especially the life of Christ Jesus. Thanks for this wonderful lift and encouragement John.

  56. Love it! The message I'm taking away is: Face every wave directly with confidence -- don't turn sideways to deflect it as that merely invites defeat. Let the wave/challenge lift and propel you, instead of upending you. What great lessons. Thanks.

  57. THANKS JON & all the great SUPER LIFTS!

  58. Thanks John, I so needed this.

  59. It's the Principal of Love that lifts us up. Button up this Survival Suit, hang on to your Life Preserver!

  60. Thank you John! I love that statement from our dear Bible! We are never tempted above that of which we are able! We also have the following declaration that if we seem to be tempted, God give us a " way of escape" so we can continue! St. Paul also affirms that there is really no temptation going to come upon us except those "common to man". I love to remember these statements during a "sea of turmoil" in my life! I've had time when error's false claim of fear, defeat or pending disaster seemed to overwhelm me. Often those false fears appeared to me as some new thing, some new symptom of something harmful. Like your wonderful apology of a large "wave" that threatened to swamp ,e and pull me under, just as gently I've felt the helping presence of God's love nd care for his beloved child" lift me above the tumult. To my joy and sometimes amazement, trusting God and not over reacting, I've just been lifted above the whole thing, and there I am on calm seas again! It reminds me of Mary Baker Eddy's beautiful poem "Christ My Refuge" (Hymn 253 C.S. Hymnal) " And ore earths troubled, angry sea, I see Christ walk, And come to me and tenderly, divinely talk.". I've always loved that Mrs. Eddy goes on in the next stanza to explain that the real blessing in the experience is to "enground"us "on the rock upon life's shore, 'ganist which the winds and waves can shock, Oh, never more!". Thank you for sharing this today

  61. Yes! Ask your Higher Power to Walk You Through It! Problems are Stepping Stones from God - meant to lift us Higher. Or as Mrs. Eddy once so wisely said, "Trials Are Proofs of God's Care". Yes, even tho' we may see them as impossible Trials, God sees them as Helpers in our Journey Spiritward. How would we grow if we didn't have problems......????

  62. Thank you so much for this daily lift - I heard it twice, so comforting! I will share it with others!!

  63. Thank you so much for this wonderful lift, John. What a comfort it is to know that God is always with us and provides whatever we need. We are so blessed!

  64. THANKS JOHN,
I HAVE BEEN KAYAKING IN PACIFIC OCEAN FACING THE MANY BIG WAVES. IT WORKS! NOW I CAN DO THE SAME BY FACING HEAD ON WITH MORTAL MIND SUGGESTIONS OF TODAY. THANKS.

  65. This is such a wonderful reminder when we are facing something that does seem about to overwhelm us. Amazing how just two little minutes can pack such a comforting and powerful lesson!

  66. I'm so humbly touched by this message and all the awesome comments. Thank you, John and to all my dear " lifters". I'm learning so much and I so appreciate the references mentioned. Thank you so much!!!!
    Love to all

  67. Thank you, John.

This is a wonderful reminder to face the foe, to take up our cross daily and so defeat every morph of error. Mrs. Eddy has over 90 statements in her writings urging each one to radically rely on Truth, Life and Love, our triple-ply salvation. Nothing else works.

  68. Thank You John, How great it is to have Real Strenght wit us at All times, By just changing our thought from unreal to Real-God.

  69. Thanks you, John...for this most inspiring lift.

  70. I love seeing comments come in from all over the world: Uruguay, Buenos Aires, Australia, England, Germany, Moscow, and Canada. We're all in the same boat, aren't we? We all face challenges that threaten to overwhelm us, no matter where we live. We also all support one another with our responses of inspiration that cut through the waves of doubt and fear. These are valuable additions to the wonderful messages in the Daily Lifts.

  71. Thank you! So reassuring!

  72. I have never heard this explained any better. This Lift is a powerful insight into a verse that seems old hat sometimes and often not given the deep thought it deserves. Thank you for the refreshing and in-depth view of this important Bible promise.

  73. Very nice. Thank you.

  74. Very insightful... awesome! Thank you for this wonderful analogy! Such a great lift!

  75. Right on John also thx Bev well put..great comments all a round...

  76. Thank you

  77. Thank you very much John for this very helpful lift! It is I am sure helping so many people just as it helped me!

  78. Thank you John for this Lift, and awesome illustration of Paul's declaration!!

  79. ..a canoe versus a larger wave is like using a sling against a spear and a sword, or Elisha and his servant versus the Syrian army, Elijah versus the prophets of Baal, or Jesus versus the Legion, or Jesus versus the dead and 4-days buried Lazarus; the Bible is filled (and Mrs Eddy's writings) with the manifestations of the kingdom of heaven come on earth, and how it's individualized through everyone of us..

  80. Thank you,John. I was surprised to be loved all day long by your spiritual message.

Gracias, John. Yo muy sorprendido de ser amado todo este dia por tu espiritual mensaje.

    Steve

  81. In her class-book, Mrs. Eddy writes, "Christian marvels,( and marvel is the simple meaning of the Greek word rendered miracle in the New Testament) will be misunderstood and misused by many, until the glorious Principle of these marvels is gained." Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, page 474.)
Today on my seven-mile walk downstream on the footpath, I had to turn around because the footbridge was down for repairs. I met two people, one town utility worker, and one hiker like myself, and we all had to turn around and go back. But by the end of next week, the bridge will be hanging back where it has been since 1998, with new wooden planks for hikers or pedal bikers to go across.
Thanks for Apostle Paul and thanks for the music

  82. Thank you, This is very much needed for our trip this weekend.

  83. Magnificent...

    Thanks.....

  84. Thank you, it has been helpful in meeting mortal mind's murmurings & once again being reminded it is not something we have to do: "...but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make an escape, that ye may be able to bear it."

This was an unfamiliar verse to me, so I'm even more grateful for it being brought out in the Daily Lift which help so many of us get new inspiration for our journey onward & upward.

  85. Thank you for this memorable lift - so helpful!

  86. SO true - and humanity has proven again and again the wisdom, resilient, love, patience to show how wonderfully we are made - Thank you John for your metaphor and metaphysical ideas!! This one and also the previous one. Deeply grateful!!

  87. Thank you for this wonderful picture of meeting huge waves straight on. An equally strong picture came to my mind of you in your canoe, having passed the crest, are paddling down the other sided. Not drifting but keeping your craft straight and not broadsided by the waves. It made me think of the times I have had a healing and just thanked God and the practitioner who helped me and went on with my life. Sometimes the same problem presented itself at a later date and had to be dealt with again. I can see now that I had not kept thought on 'the enduring the good and the true' and had not understood fully that it was 'the Spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and the Christ' which had been demonstrated.
Much gratitude for your healing message, for our Daily Lifts and the responses from our family of Lifters.

  88. Powerfully good! Thanks so much, John!

  89. Thank you, John -- I appreciate the image of being tossed into the wave and meeting it head- on!

  90. Thanks for the canoe-wave image!

  91. 1 Corinthians 10: 13 shows that we can accomplish an important endeavor even in dire circumstances such as the terrible north easter right after Hurricane Sandy. I had to keep an important appointment and in my physical condition, had to use a private Ambulence, which the hospital contacted for me. The Ambulence informed us that they didn't have any gas. I prayed to know that nothing could stand in the way of an honest need and that "Divine has met and will always meet every human need." The need was met, and just in time. I thank God for leading me into C/S and teaching me that no matter what the situation, our litgiterment needs are met.

  92. it is wonderful to tune in to what the oceans can teach us. Thanks

  93. thank you - truly, we are always able...
