Life is not easy, we have to jump many obstacles and many times we are not even clear of our goal, just as if we were climbing a mountain and couldn't see the top because of the clouds. Every step we give -if safely done- gets us closer to the top. Every step is vital to who we are.
Sometimes prayer feels like we are climbing up in a fog, achievements are nowhere to be found, but if we pray knowing that we are God's own children and that our Father never abandon us, then every step we give gets us closer to our goal, God.

Thank you, Mark, for the reminder to not only look for progress one step at a time, but to value each step, and acknowledge how far we have come. Sometimes prayer does seem like climbing a mountain shrouded in fog, where we must focus on, and trust, that each step, each realization, takes us higher. Lately I've been thinking that prayer is a response to Love's invitation to see more of reality through communing with God. Mortal sense inverts that invitation and calls it a problem or concern, -- which might be likened to the fog encasing the mountaintop. If we go along with this, we think we must pray in order to solve the problem or allay the concern. But if we keep the perspective of prayer as accepting Love's invitation to see and experience more of His goodness, we'll pray with more joy and expectation, and we'll pay less attention to the inverted picture.
Further to yesterday's lift about the cup not being half full, but always running over -- anyone working to enlarge their concept of supply may find it helpful to listen to a metaphysical talk entitled "Grace - the Key to Prosperity" given at High Ridge House, a Christian Science care facility in Riverdale, NY. Great Lift Mark. Thank you. Mary Baker Eddy says,"..the spiritual facts of existence are gained step by step, .." Each step we take (in thought) takes us further away from error and closer to Gods goodness. On page 296 of S&H Mrs Eddy says, "An improved belief is one step our of error, and aids in taking the next step and in understanding the situation in Christian Science." When our thoughts become fully aligned with God time and space will no longer play a part in reaching our spiritual destination.

Thank you, Mark! Your lift ist most inspiring and very thought provoking. Yes, step by step belongs to the progress we are making. I did a lot of hiking in the Alps earlier and I loved it when I reached the top, and never wanted to go down again because of the wonderful view and the very special atmosphere. Until my husband would almost take me by the hand and say: come on now.
Your words have been very helpful. Thank you!

In God we trust for each upward step. We shall give thanks for each step taken and for those yet to come. "Watch!" for where we place our feet. It's not the number of steps, but the altitude reached with each step that brings us closer to the summit of divine thought. Thank you Mark for the "lift".

Your comments are practical and inspiring! Living in California when just out of college, I accepted a job on the East Coast, but had to drive by myself to get there (in my VW Beetle -- oh yeah!). First stop: St George, Utah, where I looked at my map and saw how far I still had to travel. That evening, in tears on the phone to my mother, she wisely advised me not to focus on the length of the journey still to come, but instead, to focus on one day at a time and to express gratitude to God for being with me every step of the way. She was so right. The drive gave me a precious opportunity to get to know myself -- and God -- much better, and that lesson has stayed with me all these years later. Thank you, Mark, for reminding me of it today. God bless you!

Thank you Mark for one more lift. Thank God for each upward step taken and for those yet needed. It is not the number of steps, but the altitude gained which brings us closer to the summit of infinite good. Watching, working, and praying before placing the foot dispenses the (seeming) fog of materiality. Each of these steps then brings a grandeur view of reality, spiritually.

Not so long ago I got tired of singing la-la-la-la when I only knew some key phrases to a favorite hymn. It just happens that one I am singing in my car lately is useful here. Hymn 136, last verse. If we are climbing mountains, step by step, our climbing partner is always with us. I hope He likes my singing.
I climb, with joy, the heights of Mind,
To soar o'er time and space;
I yet shall know as I am known
And see Thee face to face.
Till time and space and fear are naught
My quest shall never cease,
Thy presence ever goes with me
And Thou dost give me peace.

Thank you, Mark. You remind me of the Jacob story in which he had to be secure in what he had gained from his struggle before letting go and going forward to meet his brother and the 400 men who came with him, consolidate his progress, so to speak.
I find I need to do that almost daily in order to internalize those lovely ideas before they move on-- to be sure they are a part of me, rather than just passing through. Do I really know and live what I know each step of the way?

What a touching and poignant message for this day, as we enter the reflective Holy Days. As the year ends we naturally evaluate the past year to glean the lessons and see where that might lead us in the New Year ahead. As I hear you quote from MBE, I am touched by her carefully chosen words and know that this comes from a spiritual master. Why? Because it is obvious the depth of her reflections on Truth and her receptivity to words that hold true for humanity. I so appreciate the depth of your words Mark Swinney that lift us all to higher ground today. I hope that I can take the time to reflect on the ground gained this year in a way that helps the lessons to go deeper in me. I am learning and have so much to learn as well. I feel God's purpose in me developing and want to continue to move forward with God's guidance and my careful listening and following. Some people think that to listen is to obey and use the words as though they meant the same thing. Isn't listening, listening, and then we choose how to act according to our own conscience or inner guide? Have a great day. The daily lifts are the best way to start my day on the daily climb to the mountain top.

I loved your Lift today. I lived in Utah for 17 years and learned many lessons from hiking the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. When I moved there from Mass. I had never hiked. So my early hiking lessons were patience and perseverance. Hiking to 10,000 feet was a challange to the belief of life in matter and its restrictions. I hiked in summer heat and winter snows. The first time I hiked any mountain, I never knew where the top was until I got there. I found that praising God for his/her glory made each hike glorious, and unique. My thought was always filled with inspiration as I hiked away from the base of the mountain. The reward of the view from the top of any mountain is always awesome. It seems to put things in perspective. What had troubled or annoyed me during the week melted away when the mountain reminded me of how great and glorious our God is. Thanks again for the Lift and the memories it brought me of my many hikes in Park City.

Thank you for this message, Mark. While thinking about it, I wondered if perhaps there is not really an arduous climb to attempt, but rather a scenic hike, with beautiful vistas all around. If we can but pause to consider each lesson learned, the grandeur of the scenery becomes apparent. Then, we can continue the journey in peace, still learning, still progressing.

Unlike Missy #20, I drove from Long Island, NY to California in 1962 with my 11 year old daughter to start a new life. Fortunately I had no time deadline as friends in California had invited me to stay with them until I got settled. So each day was a new adventure as well as a step towards a new life and we saw many sights I had only heard of or read about and never thought I'd actually see in person. Not knowing what would unfold at my destination, I relied on prayer knowing that leaning on the sustaining infinite each day would be big with blessings as well as the destination. And so it has proved to be. Step by step God directs our path and we have only to listen for his direction to receive his bountiful blessings.

I woke up this morning with "Trust the Eternal when the shadows gather" (hymn 359) running through my mind. The second verse reads "Trust the Eternal, for the clouds that vanish no more can move the mountains from their base than sin's illusive wreaths of mist can banish Light from His throne or loving from His face". I read this so differently this morning - NOTHING can hide Love from us. NOTHING can move our foundation or keep us from seeing Love. Then I listened to this Daily Lift which so fits in with this and what I've been praying about this morning. God certainly does lead us step by step with His comforting ideas. Thank you everyone!

Thank you, Mark, for “Value each step … you’ve never seen the top of the mountain … you don’t know how far you have to go … it really doesn’t matter how far you have to go, what really matters is what you’ve learned so far … each step along the way … is vital to who we are in the long run.” As I was praying recently, asking what my next steps were. My answer came in recognizing that I needed to just take the next step and then ask again. The value in each step is that it’s a “now” moment filled with opportunity for the human to yield to the divine and to be blessed in that yielding. In fact, the journey, itself, is the destination. Each step moves me from one destination point in the journey on to the next destination point and then on to the next. I'm on course when my mountaintop is the one that Jesus knew and recommended. And what a climb! Sometimes so steep and other times just as an easy flatland walk or run! :-) And has anyone else had the feeling of sliding down into a valley, every once in awhile? Even if the physical landscape seems “same-old-same-old,” everything’s always new. Our journey is about the “now.” I might have been in “this place” before or still; but, never “now,” in this consciousness. And so there’s always something new to discover as I grow spiritually and “the scenery,” my understanding, everything! - changes! Only God never changes. With God as my destination, I discover God as my journey, all along the way – at and in every valuable step.

But there are other things going on too, aren't there, Mark? Someone calls out, "Wait for me!" And another whimpers, "It's too hard!" And while you're gaining height, and feeling really at peace, there is that voice suggesting perhaps it's all a bit much. So we do have to not only set our feet, and hands, but our thoughts have to be forward looking. Not allowing what's going on down on the ground to distract us from our purpose. Those are the steps that are toughest. But it certainly makes the achievement all the sweeter - the desire to do it all again more appealing.

Dear Mark,
Thank you for your inspring lifts. It seemed challenging just to get up today and face another day of climbing the mountain after most of it came crashing through our lives several years ago. Everything changed, and it took us some time to realize that God had not changed, and would give us the strength to keep climbing.
Where we live, clouds sometimes come by and say "hello" to us. When we first moved here, and as I stood doing dishes one day, the day was coming to a close, but suddenly it was quite dark. I thought that an early fog had set in. When I looked up again, just moments later,I realized it was a cloud that had passed by, and there was the day, brighter again. God is giving us the courage to realize that the clouds always do move on, and in spite of them, we rely on God's seeing for our direction. Most sincerely, Kalani

Mrs Eddy says, “Step by step will those who trust Him find that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.""
And
" The God-inspired walk calmly on though it be with bleeding footprints.."
Mrs Eddy also says,
For Jesus, his step by step mission
“was both individual and collective. He did life’s work aright not only in justice to himself, but in mercy to mortals, — to show them how to do theirs, but not to do it for them nor to relieve them of a single responsibility.”
With every valuable step we take, Mrs Eddy reminds us “Every pang of repentance and suffering, every effort for reform, every good thought and deed, will help us to understand Jesus’ atonement for sin and aid its efficacy;"
If we are to follow the Golden Rule, and the Sixth Tenet, then in humility, humanity, and obedience, we are to turn to our brothers and sisters, walking up the same fog-peaked mountain, and help them, even as Simon the Cyrene, helped Jesus carry his cross to Golgotha, for we are not alone. God's love for us is direct, and is manifested collectively through each of to each of us.
Thank you Mark, DL Team, and DL Community!

Every prayer that involves the betterment of self or mankind is always answered, never unanswered. I speak from experience. It might show up in teensy weensy happenings where one doesn't relize it, since the human being is prone to think the answer to prayer must be loud and clear to be known as successful. But it comes in ratio of growth in spiritual understanding. Value each step that is made, but it must be toward better understanding of God. Prayer for material things is not prayer, but prayer to receive the wisdom of God, the love towards God's creation, including man, those are the prayers, if sincere, will definitely be answered.

This metaphor of climbing a mountain is such a good illustration of what it takes to climb from a material sense to a spiritual sense as revealed in Christian Science. Thank you Mark!
As a young man I worked as a surveyor for logging companies on the west coast, and had to climb up and down mountains on an almost daily basis. At first on some of the steeper mountains it was hard to get started. I would get winded after a short time, and have to pause. After "catching my breath", I could continue all day. After a few months of this daily activity, it became easier, I no longer became winded, the pause less necessary, and the climbs more enjoyable.
My surveyor's vest had a back pocket for carrying a thermos and a lunch, so I had no heavy baggage. Which reminds me of the heavy political and other baggage we see others carrying today. Mrs. Eddy refers to it in Miscellaneous Writings pg. 327:
"Many there were who had entered the valley to specu‐
late in worldly policy, religion, politics, finance, and to
search for wealth and fame. These had heavy baggage
of their own, and insisted upon taking all of it with them,
which must greatly hinder their ascent."

What really grabbed my attention in this valuable lift was the word, diligent. I had just read the lesson and the word diligent stood out to me earlier this morning, "the substance of a diligent man is precious." (Prov 12:27) I looked up the word diligent in the Bible, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy (diligence) including the dictionary. I found that to be diligent and value each step is to prosper along the way. We may not see our complete reward until the goal is reached, but what a confidence builder! Thanks Mark

This reminds me of when I've climbed mountains in the past. At first, the mountain would appear daunting, at times even impossible. I loved today's DL. It reminded me of an experience a few years ago, when our church was having a lecture. I had offered to drive the lecturer up to the top of Mt. Haleakala on Maui, the day before the lecture. I had to pick her up a little after 4 a.m. to get to the mountain in time for sunrise, a time for a beautiful view. That morning it poured cats and dogs, and when I called to ask if she still wanted to go, she said "yes". We took each curve up the mountain slowly, anticipating the final goal of reaching the top. When we arrived, it was not only cold, raining and windy, but there was nothing exceptional to view because of the weather conditions. Although I felt badly for her sake, we both agreed that the trip up was an adventure anyway. We headed down as daylight was upon us and all of a sudden she asked me to pull to the side of the road. There on the hillside was a beautiful flower blooming amidst volcanic rock and dirt. She was thrilled. Why? Because she was wanting to add a point to her lecture and this lovely bloom provided the answer, the point being, that when it appears nothing is going on of much value or importance, the seeds of Truth are unfolding in amazing ways. By valuing each step of this journey up the mountain and down, we rejoiced in the revelations along the way.

Thank you so much for this precious lift! Thank you to Marilyn #2 -- I love the idea of prayer being an invitation to see more of Love's abundant good & not a response to a problem. This so helps to see the good, every step of the way, unfolding as our receptivity widens and gratitude is expressed.....adding even more value to those precious moments.... so grateful to this lifter community & all who contribute to it....

Thank you so much for this lift. I was feeling a bit discouraged as I have been studying this Science for nearly 30 years and recently again found myself in a situation I hoped I had outgrown and wondered about what progress I had made. So your lift encouraged me to keep going to see what there is on the mountain top one little step at the time.

Thanks Mark. As I listened to this wonderful Lift I thought of how your illustration describes the upward journey accomplishing the directive I have often pondered on page 22 of Mrs. Eddy's bio Retrospective and Introspective included in her Prose Works ... "The human history needs to be revised, and the materail record expunged." That directive has at times felt rather stern or some times burdensome, But I have begun to view it as a natural result of our desire to grow in grace and learn more of our spiritual relationship with our Father Mother, now I too look back to see where I once was and how far I have come in my own individual spiritaul journey and see how letting Christ lead the way, that history we want to revise and that record we want expunged is simply dissolved by God's universal solvent of divine Love. Now I don't look back or down as often as I look up and forward to what good will unfold that continues to revise and expunge with blessing untold.

- 11/14/2012Life is not easy, we have to jump many obstacles and many times we are not even clear of our goal, just as if we were climbing a mountain and couldn't see the top because of the clouds.

- 11/14/2012Thank you, Mark, for the reminder to not only look for progress one step at a time, but to value each step, and acknowledge how far we have come.
- 11/14/2012Great Lift Mark.

- 11/14/2012Your comments are practical and inspiring!

- 11/14/2012Thank you Mark for one more lift.

Hymn 136, last verse. If we are climbing mountains, step by step, our climbing partner is always with us. I hope He likes my singing.
I climb, with joy, the heights of Mind,
To soar o'er time and space;
I yet shall know as I am known
And see Thee face to face.
Till time and space and fear are naught
My quest shall never cease,
Thy presence ever goes with me
And Thou dost give me peace.

- 11/14/2012What a touching and poignant message for this day, as we enter the reflective Holy Days.

- 11/14/2012I loved your Lift today.

- 11/14/2012Thank you for this message, Mark. While thinking about it, I wondered if perhaps there is not really an arduous climb to attempt, but rather a scenic hike, with beautiful vistas all around. - 11/14/2012Unlike Missy #20, I drove from Long Island, NY to California in 1962 with my 11 year old daughter to start a new life.

- 11/14/2012I woke up this morning with "Trust the Eternal when the shadows gather" (hymn 359) running through my mind.

- 11/14/2012Thank you, Mark, for “Value each step … you’ve never seen the top of the mountain … you don’t know how far you have to go … it really doesn’t matter how far you have to go, what really matters is what you’ve learned so far … each step along the way … is vital to who we are in the long run.” As I was praying recently, asking what my next steps were.

- 11/14/2012But there are other things going on too, aren't there, Mark? Someone calls out, "Wait for me!" And another whimpers, "It's too hard!" And while you're gaining height, and feeling really at peace, there is that voice suggesting perhaps it's all a bit much. So we do have to not only set our feet, and hands, but our thoughts have to be forward looking. Not allowing what's going on down on the ground to distract us from our purpose. Those are the steps that are toughest. But it certainly makes the achievement all the sweeter - the desire to do it all again more appealing.

- 11/14/2012Dear Mark,
Thank you for your inspring lifts.

- 11/14/2012Mrs Eddy says, “Step by step will those who trust Him find that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.""
And
" The God-inspired walk calmly on though it be with bleeding footprints.."

- 11/14/2012DEAR Mark Swinney, thank you for this elevating :-) lift! I love that you point out that although of course the mountain peak is what we are aiming for, it is the steps along the way that really matter. How important in our life journey that we see this! Love to you and yours,

- 11/14/2012Every prayer that involves the betterment of self or mankind is always answered, never unanswered.

- 11/14/2012This metaphor of climbing a mountain is such a good illustration of what it takes to climb from a material sense to a spiritual sense as revealed in Christian Science.

- 11/14/2012What really grabbed my attention in this valuable lift was the word, diligent. Thanks Mark

- 11/14/2012Thank you for the great lift.
This reminds me of when I've climbed mountains in the past. At first, the mountain would appear daunting, at times even impossible. But then at I took one step after another, a path would open up and before I knew it, I was at the top. Value each step, enjoy the journey, live in the now. Thanks again for the reminder!

- 11/14/2012Each inspired thought we embrace in prayer is a new and wonderful handhold in our climb!
"Mind's infinite ideas run and disport themselves. In humility they climb the heights of holiness," says Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health (p. 514).

- 11/14/2012Thanks Mark, that is right on! That mountain top is up there someplace, and we must keep in tune with the daily steps to get there, rejocing all the way! But not always easy for sure.

- 11/14/2012Hymn #218 from the Christian Science Hymnal comes to mind;
The freer step, the fuller breath,
The wide horizon's grander view;
The sense of Life that knows no death, —
The Life that maketh all things new.
My 2nd. visit today to the comments, my 4th to hear Mark's message. Thank you to all the lifters for their "grander views".

- 11/14/2012I loved today's DL.

- 11/14/2012Thank you so much for this needed reminder and valuable view. I am still pondering and came back here to read the comments that were so inspired. YAY. We are so fortunate to have great hymns to help us pray aright and an understanding community. Thanks to all.

- 11/14/2012I've just started a business of offering my services to home sit for anyone anywhere. I have this (silly?) urge to call out "Hhheellllooooo?! Is anyone out there?!" ;-) With your UP lifting message today I sync now with my God-given trust that steps taken in Love, Truth and Mind-motivated are not in vain. MANY thanks, Mark!

- 11/14/2012Hi, Mark! Thank you. This is a big help on a current issue.
Still climbing...
- 11/14/2012Thank you so much for this precious lift!

- 11/14/2012I went to secondary school for a period in the Swiss Alps, and I returned later for a while so I appreciate what you recommend. At the end of the day I count my final moments as the twelve baskets full after the feast each day. Thank you.

- 11/16/2012Thank you so much for this lift. I was feeling a bit discouraged as I have been studying this Science for nearly 30 years and recently again found myself in a situation I hoped I had outgrown and wondered about what progress I had made. So your lift encouraged me to keep going to see what there is on the mountain top one little step at the time.

- 11/17/2012Thanks Mark.
