Ciência e Saúde—Revised Portuguese translation of Science and Health

- Church News

The revised Portuguese translation of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy is now available!

Major Revision

A major revision of a translation of Science and Health does not occur often and is always a cause for celebration. Originally translated in 1963, this Portuguese translation has brought healing and spiritual understanding to the Portuguese language field for 50 years. Now roughly 40 percent revised, this new edition of Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras continues to build upon earlier efforts to accurately represent the original English text in Portuguese.

Revisions are spurred by the solid spiritual growth and healing in a particular language field. This collective growth eventually enables translators to bring the translated text even closer to Mary Baker Eddy’s original meaning. Mary Baker Eddy refers to Science and Health as “...the complete statement of Christian Science …” (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 37), and each revised translation aims to bring the meaning, clarity, and tone into closer alignment with “...this final revelation…” (Science and Health,p. 107).

This revised translation was joyfully announced on April 18, 2014 at the Church Alive summit in São Paulo, Brazil. Lyle Young, Clerk of The Mother Church and member of the Christian Science Board of Directors, and Magda Völker, Communications Coordinator for Angola, Brazil, and Portugal, were the presenters. They shared information about the new translation, including the thought behind important revisions to the translation of “the scientific statement of being,” the spiritual interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer, and more. A huge thank you is due to the many, many people involved in bringing this translation forward!

New Covers

Many members of the Portuguese-speaking field offered invaluable input on the look and feel of the cover design. Our goal was to create a cover that would look pleasing on a shelf to both members and nonmembers alike, and be a welcoming, inclusive book in every way—a beautiful book to ably represent the beautiful content inside. The pattern design featured along the spine is inspired by a stenciled wall decoration in the Original Edifice of The Mother Church. We hope you’ll pick up a copy soon and take a look!
