Dear Editor:
It is unjust and inaccurate to say that the teachings of Christian Science condemn Aids as God's revenge on the gay community (“Men who made Doris’s life hell”, 27 June, 2008). Christian Science teaches no such thing and never has done. Its system of prayer-based healing, explained in Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (www.christianscience.com) teaches a God of boundless, impartial love for all, with no exceptions. Being healed by coming into an awareness of that love through prayer nurtures the recognition that God does not cause AIDS or any sickness, but can free humanity from suffering when we see Him in His true light and understand better what it means that each one is His spiritual child. Rather than misrepresenting God as vengeful, we can lovingly support each other in our need to grow into the spiritual understanding which honours God as a Parent of infinite compassion, as Jesus showed by his healing words and works.
