1. julius grigore, jr. says:

Ms Rose, thank you for coupling the material sense with spiritual sense through surfing. you did it meaningfully and beautifully.

2. Elena Shideler, California (San Diego) says:

Thank you, Mary Alice. The analogy of letting yourself be carried by the wave on a surfboard, effortlessly, reminds me of another one, a soft baby eagle being carried on mother’s wings to practice flying. How safe might the little one feel! How safe makes me feel a thought like this one!
SPANISH
Gracias, Mary Alice.

3. Annette from Berlin says:

Thank you very much for this message: I’ll ride the wave today.

4. Danny Walker San Angelo Texas says:

Thank you, Mary Alice. It is a restful thought to know that the Christ wave (Surf) is always carrying us safely and joyously.

5. Renate Lohl says:

Happy surfing, everyone!

6. Katherine Dickson says:

Thank you for a wonderful Daily Lift. It was so much needed. It is amazing of what we always have at hand through our tools of Christian Science – the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and even in the Hymnals. There is always an answer to every problem that we face or experience and we can always use our mental surf board to help us over these waves of problems to calmer and peaceful times through Christian Science.

7. david says:

Beautiful imagery. So much help in feeling the relationship with the Christ.Thank you so much for your selfless contribution.

8. Anne Daly says:

This is a beautiful and practical metaphor showing how, using our spiritual sense, the Christ lifts and carries each one to a healing solution – there is no struggle involved, just a listening to the true idea voicing good, and going with that flow of goodness. Thank you so much, Mary Alice!

9. Malcolm Drummond, Henrietta NY says:

Many thanks Mary Alice for your inspiring ’spiritually surfing’ lift.. And ’spiritual sense’ means to me the spiritual vision of pure perfection, engulfed in the radiance of divine Love which (for me) appears when least expected. “Only by the illumination of the spiritual sense, can the light of understanding be thrown upon this Science…” (S&H 461;11)

10. Susan says:

I just bought a CD of the Beach Boy’s favorite hits! So I was in tune with your message before it came. Thank you, Father. The idea that came from your good sharing was that when we surf with the Christ, we are expressing dominion over the sea — “elementary, latent error” as Mrs. Eddy describes it. Your clear focus on the right state of thought is very powerful and clear, and I’m grateful for it. Thank you, Mary Alice.

11. Jodi says:

Thank you for this inspiring Daily Lift. Like the idea of riding the wave..great thought.

12. Lorraine from Dayton, Ohio says:

Love this lift! Like Anne #8 says: “There is no struggle involved.” There is no struggle in real being. Just let divine Love carry you forward. Let, the biggest word in the English dictionary, God defined for me as “Love Everlastingly Triumphant!” “Let that mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” All the love of Love. Lorrie

13. Douglas, USA says:

I taught myself to stand up-right and Godlike when I started to learn how to walk. This brought new opportunities to do all kinds of things like smile and talk to other people. This also brought brand new ideas to mind just like each wave in the ocean brings something new to the shore. It is said in the Bible that God is the light of the world. I thought of this as saying: 1) that I am the Christ idea and good that gives to humanity all that is wisdom and up-right and Godlike; 2) that I am like a light wave that continuously brings to everyone that light of life in thought and action. Is this thought a reflection of a smile? Is thought giving? Is this the very expression of love? :)

14. Z. Scotland says:

I was struggling with a problem today Thank you Mary Alice Rose and AD 8 and MD9 I am surfing thank you.

15. Mary H. AL says:

Thank you, what a wonderful way to feel uplifted.

16. Maria Elvira – Brasil says:

Great analogy!
It´s comforting to hear that after two weeks long trip oversea.
Thank you Mary Alice, for your inspiration!

17. Martin, Charleston, SC says:

Thanks Mary Alice for the lift. I enjoy riding waves with a body board so the lift was easy to be inspired by!

18. Pat from McCaysville GA says:

Thanks!! That was so good… and shows that we don’t always have to PADDLE and work hard, if we let the “wave” carry us.

19. Christine says:

Literally a wonderful lift! I can feel myself being carried by this wave and I especially like the idea that one can’t help but be carried by the flow of all good, and being carried safely and triumphantly all the way to the shore. A beautiful and exciting metaphor and spiritual experience. Thank you Mary Alice!

20. Mimi from Dayton says:

Thank you so much for that wonderful “picture” of staying “on top” with the Christ – and with the power that propels us forward – will keep that with me today.

21. BLUE GOLD says:

Thank you Mary Alice. Your metaphor is perfect. As one who has lived and surfed on the beach at Malibu, California, your mental picture is beautiful. For surfers, or for those who have watched surfers, it is interesting to note that the surfers will hold their position sittiing on their boards facing the incoming waves. They pass most of them – just not big enough. Because they want a good ride, they wait for the big one, and they all seem to sense it at the same time. The entire fleet of boards are up and racing to catch the crest of that big wave – - for the big ride. In some surfing circles, this is known as “Ninth Wave.” On average, the ninth wave is the big one. Here is where I bridge to your metaphor. How Christ operates in thought is the Ninth Wave – - “The true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to man, speaking to the human consciosness.” It is ever present – the perpetual wave of goodness When we listen with our spiritual sense, we hear this voice. It is our capacity to understand God. Each moment, each day, we can catch this perfect wave of Christ – the wave of divine direction as God, divine Love, governs every moment of our experience. This “Daily LIft” reminds us of our “Mental Surf Board” and we catch the perfect wave of Christ all the way to a complete and satisfying solution to our dally challenges. Surf’s UP ! Thank you. Thank you.

22. Jackson from Porto Alegre-RS – Brazil says:

Thank you so much Mary Alice for this divine insight!

23. JVS From Missouri says:

Surf’s up!!!!!

Wow, I love that.

Thank you so much, Mary Alice. : )

24. Grateful listener says:

Thanks so much, Mary Alice, for this enlightening sense of the Christ carring us over the cares of the day. After a very challening day yesterday, I’m ready to be carried by the Christ today.
Lori (formerly from Rochester, NY now Crescent City, CA)

25. Solange from Brasil says:

Loved this message !
Before listening to it I thought I was the only Christian Science student that felt like surfing on the waves when guided by God.
When we let go our human wills and thoughts and decide to listen and follow God´s plan, something magic starts take place.
Suddenly new doors open up and a new enlighted path can be seen.
God loves us very much and His plan for us is magnificient.
So, just trust Him and surf your life with joy !

26. Jane B. says:

Thank you, Mary Alice!

27. Anni B. Wash.. says:

I awoke today with the alert and immediate thought of blessings in my life for the current year; I felt touched and moved, impelled by the Christ. Lovely way to begin witnessing another fresh day!

And then your inspired message popped up.

Mary Alice, oh my! thank you so. I want to ride on the thought expressed by #8. It’s tht ripple effect of sheer goodness pouring into consciousness.

28. Bob in Florida says:

Thanks for getting us up on the wave.

29. Bev Newsham – Sandpoint, ID says:

Yes, “Let Go and Let God” is like riding the waves of God’s constant Goodness. “Keep it Simple” and “It’s All Good” are other good surfboards to ride today! Thanks, Mary Alice, makes me want to get out there and “Catch a Wave, so I can be sittin’ on top of the world” – as the Beach Boys used to sing!

Happy Surfin’ to All!

30. Trudi Atlanta Ga says:

Thank you, Mary Alice. I loved being reminded that I ride the wave, and it takes me where I am to go. Such a great metaphor to yielding to God’s direction.

31. Jan J – Grass Valley, CA says:

Thank you so much, Mary Alice.
Loved your example … will never look at surfers the same again.
And how wonderful to know that the Christ is speaking to everyone!

32. Joy from Alberta, Canada says:

I have never been surfing, but Mary Alice, your description of it, and how it relates to “riding” with God really works!
Thank you for this LIFT for today.

33. Cynthia says:

What a perfect illustration, I love this idea so much! Thank you.

34. Joy says:

What a good analogy Mary Alice! Staying on top of the wave we cannot be touched by the turbulence below and as we come closer to shore there we are upright whole and free! No need to dive under to see what is going on. Just stay on top and ride the wave! Many thanks Mary Alice.

35. Evelyn says:

Thank you everyone……..we’re all riding the waves of divine direction, carried by the Christ into a perfect day.

36. Sarah says:

I like the thought that the surf is always there. We don’t have “to do” something ourselves. However, we must trust, hold on to the surfboard and keep our balance. Thanks very much, Mary Alice.

37. Anonymous says:

Mary Alice, thank you, I am grateful for this lift today. I am trying to learn how to pray from acknowleging God’s allness , oneness, only Divine power that knows and created only good as oppose to asking that I be granted favor to resolve what I preceive to be an overwhelming problem a method learned in other religions, which I am still associated with. Also I struggle with letting God plan unfold and not doing anything of myself in terms of not putting my own plans to work. I don’t quite know what that means. If I am looking for a job does that mean don’t send out a resume, is that not the right thing to do? If I am in overwhelming debt, don’t do the necessary things to try to get out? Or do what is pratical, is that trusting God? These are the thoughts that I am faced with today. The lift today suggest to let our mental spiritual sense be the surf that lead us triumphantly through whatever it is we are facing. When I completed my meditation this morning I resigned myself to think about nothing but God’s goodness, allness, and my oneness with him today, not the problems…I will surf on those mental thoughts today.

38. Susan says:

Thanks, Mary Alice. So often I think of spiritual life as a series of disciplines and work-outs. It’s refreshing to switch gears and imagine just riding the Christ wave. For those of us baking in the hot and dry American midwest today, a mental picture of beautiful surf is a joy.

39. Michael says:

Thanks Mary Alice,
What a great concept [to paraphrase], How Christ (Divine Message speaking to man) operates in thought as a Wave of Divine Direction. It sounds so friendly and inviting. A continuation of this week’s theme on fun.

Next time I perceive God waving to me, I’m going to smile and wave right back.

;-)

40. Don from Decatur, GA says:

Surfing is an experience like none other. From the time I was a little kid, I played in the ocean and loved it on days the surf was up and I could get into the water and be lifted up and carried to shore by the incoming waves–even without a surfboard. Each experience was exhilarating, new, freeing. I found the same wonderful freedom and excitement in Christian Science. God does lift us up (regardless of the circumstances) and carry us safely to shore when we let Him.

Thank you, Mary Alice.

41. Gaby, Sebago Lake- ME says:

I like the idea of the mental surfboard – standing at the shore – keeping in view these constant divine waves surrounding and supporting us.

42. Michael says:

I just noticed the addition of the Email box next to the commentor’s name. Can you tell us how that is to be used?

43. Karen says:

Thank you so much Mary Alice… this was just the lift I needed to hear this morning! I love that thought of catching the wave of divine direction letting the Christ move us triumphantly forward, knowing that this Christlike spiritual wave can’t reverse itself… it can only carry us safely to shore… that spiritual understanding that heals. Thank you!

44. Vicki in Broken Arrow OK says:

Thank you, thank you Mary Alice for this wonderful lift. And #2’s mention of the baby eagle riding on its mother’s wings. i will be riding the waves and skies today with the confidence that the Christ, Truth is carrying me safely to higher ground. Thank you everyone for these inspiring and helpful lifts and comments. And Nathan, thanks for the ever changing and uplifting introductions and closing. I am most grateful.

45. ANTOINE HANNIE CREROEA ORPHELINAT BOMA BAS CONGO RDCONGO LES ENFANTS says:

Je suis et nous sommes les bebes de Dieu notre pere -mére.
Merci pour votre pensees magique.

46. Barbara Ohannes Carol Stream, IL says:

Thank you for that inspiritng lift. I love the idea of the voice of Truth communicating to everyone. This voice can’t be drownded nor silenced. It speaks to us in the language of Love. The thought of exhilaration on a surf board reminds me of the exhilation that comes with downhill skiing and in Truth it is the analogous to the freedom to be what we are : unencumbered by material thoughts and sailing on the wings of Spirit.

47. Jan Marie Sturtz says:

Wonderful! Great food for thought and reflection.

48. John in Chico says:

Thank you! That was needed.

49. G from California says:

Thank you, Mary Alice! Your Lift reminds me of when I was a child and we lived a short drive away from Southern California’s beaches. My brother and his friends were avid surfers, and I wanted to emulate them. So I would “surf” in a friend’s swimming pool, using an inflatable canvas raft. Of course, I didn’t get very far, and I had no idea of the power and swiftness of the waves until the day I was able to take that raft to the beach. What a difference!

In thinking about those waves, I realize that, unlike the water in the pool, they always carry us forward. That’s what the Christ does – it doesn’t leave us sitting still. If, in our fear, we hang back, we will miss that triumphant and exhilarating ride, but we always have another opportunity to meet the next wave. Then, when we “let go [of fear, uncertainty, or the belief that we have to be in control] and let God.” we are carried triumphantly to shore, where we can stand secure on the new understanding that we have found in the Christ. Sometimes it may feel like we have to paddle furiously to catch the wave – the Christ idea. But there are also times when we just seem to be in the right place in our thinking, and catching the wave happens without effort. And the more we practice, through prayer and study and application, the more often that happens.

So today I’m off to the “beach” – happy surfing, everyone!

50. Margaret from So Cal says:

Thank you Mary Alice for your inspiring and invigorating lift! Thank you also to all the commenters. Trusting in the Christ to carry me swiftly and effortlessly to a solution is very helpful for work concerns and is much better than worrying about how an assignment will be completed on time. To No. 17 – One way to think about trusting God is that this will also inspire you to take the human footsteps needed, for example, which company or person to contact concerning a job or ways to reduce expenses or increase income that you may not have thought of before. An idea I like to work with from Science in Health (454: 18-19) is “Love inspires, illumines, desginates, and leads the way..” Have a fun weekend everyone!

51. Bev Newsham – Sandpoint, ID says:

Just some words for #37 Anon. – Christian Science or C.S. also can stand for Common Sense. This is not a religion about naively doing nothing and waiting for God to do everything. We are spiritual beings having a very real Human Experience. A large part of our Journey here is about learning how to use spiritual principles to solve human problems. Else why would Mrs. Eddy have said: “Divine Love Always Has Met and Always Will Meet Every HUMAN Need”?
We definitely have our part to play by taking the Human footsteps towards what we want. But we do try and let God guide us with His/Her Guidance. Cultivating a relationship with the God of our Understanding is key to hearing what God wants us to do and to knowing what God’s wonderful and fun plan is for us!

Hope this helps!

52. Carol from Yucaipa says:

To #37 When Jesus did his healing work, he asked the people to “Go and do.” What does that imply? Is he asking the person to “Go and do nothing? Go and sit? Go and stay in the same place? As a Christian Scientist I am required to go and respond with activity. Many years ago, I was looking for a job. I could NOT do nothing. I asked God for wisdom and to be a blessing wherever He would send me. I sent resumes, made phone calls, did interviews and everything that is called ‘Christly activity.’ I was finally offered a wonderful job that lasted for 19 years. This came about with prayer, trust and doing.

53. Sallee says:

Great analogy Mary Alice! I am not a surfer but think maybe I need to become a spiritual surfer now! I have had a challenge with a family member recently that has kept me riding the material wave of mortal opinion, worry and fear and at times hopelessness. I am ready to stop struggling and let the wave of the Christ carry me effortlessly. Thanks for the inspiration.

54. Sally from San Diego says:

When my husband and I were looking for a place to retire, we stopped in No. County SD. Do you know that here surfers can surf at night where restaurants keep strong lights on out over the ocean?
I began teaching SS in my new branch church and was given the high school class. There were three guys in class who would surf before SS! What dedication! They would come with wet hair and great smiles. I would listen in on talk of their activities before class. I heard the words, “Wait for the wave, man”. We talked in class about the concept of God’s sending uplifts and these waves of inspiration came often when we least expected them. But they did come! Waiting for that inspiration became the watchword for our class. Then one of them said, “That’s Tubeular”. Do you know, i found out the feeling when you are within the green water tube of a wave! I felt so liberated to know the experience of the wave is possible all of us.

55. darlene, los angeles says:

dear mary alice: great metaphor/analogy of the surfboard and “riding with christ….atop the perpetual wave of goodness.” i will be on pacific coast hwy enroute to santa monica today. looking forward to seeing the surfers and will envision the christ love surrounding and protecting them.

happy waves to everyone!

sincerely yours.

56. J.S. in Ky says:

Thank you Mary Alice, for the thoughts in this Lift. I’ll take the metaphysical surf, which is adventuresome enough for me, and it will take my full attention to master. I liked that you said once you caught a wave properly, you couldn’t keep from being carried swiftly, effortlessly to the shore destination. Catching a true wave of the Christ carries this promise so I’ll be practicing “surfing”
more after this. Catching a Christ wave properly seems to need all my concentration & many trials. I think whenever I reach the point where I always get it just right, I won’t need a physical or metaphysical body board to surf back to shore, I’ll be able to walk on the water. That goal is worth practicing surfing!

# 37 Anonymous, There is no one answer fits all, except that the Christ will guide you. If it seems wise to hold back a resume just now, do so with prayer, if you get no “direction”, follow your highest sense of right, whether before you found CS or after, and trust God will bless your sincere efforts to do right. Know the solution is already in place and that you’ll be led too it and blessed. This opens the door of your thought to know what/when/how to do what is best. Thanks # 49 G.

57. Missy in Morro Bay says:

Can totally relate to this Daily Lift — thank you so much, Mary Alice. Cowabunga!

58. Ruthilary says:

Lovely….know the feeling of getting the right idea [Christ essence] of something, perhaps while relating a testimony of healing; you just get a new perspective, and wow it carries you forward, [no wobbles...you feel the force of the wave] a new insight that means growth & its consequent healing!
Thanks for the analogy even in the heart of London I can surf!

59. Nancy in AZ says:

Thank you sooo much Mary Alice for this wonderful lift. Thanks also to #51 for her response to #37. I would like to add to #37…I love the article”God’s Law of Adjustment by Adam H. Dickey” and have found it immensely helpful when challenged and not sure of how to proceed. Thank you to all of those involved with bringing us the lift…I feel as tho I’m sitting around my kitchen table with loved friends who share their insight so unselfishly. Have a weekend of love and joy…

60. kalani from Eugene says:

I was raised in Hawaii, where it is said that because of the warm ocean, babies can often swim before they can walk. To have the experience of being one with something as large as the ocean was wonderful preparation for life. Free of fear, feeling connected and “in the flow” with this mighty force was amazing. To know God in the same way is so comforting and sustaining.

One day when I was about four years old, I was caught between an unusually large incoming wave and one that was retreating. I was literally tossed into the air by the two converging waves, and all I recall was laughing as I flew upward. As I came back down and splashed into the water, I could see my Mom running toward me, and as she picked me up, I was still laughing. When she heard me squealing in delight, she just hugged me and sent me flying upward again.

Tourists visiting the beach were so afraid for me that when I came out of the water, they crowded around me and my Mom, and she was able to assure them that I had always been alright. How wonderful that she was in the flow, watchful and trusting at the same time. She ran into the waves, but didn’t take my joy from me.

How lovely to hear the lift, read and ponder the comments, and feel all the love that is shared. Aloha, Kalani Honua

61. Carol T. St. Louis says:

Thanks for you comments in French, #45.
I will translate for those who don’t read French.
“I am and we are the babies of our Father-Mother God.
Thanks for your magical thoughts.”

62. Priscilla in Portland says:

So glad to have an explanation of why there is a box asking for our email address. I have often wondered if the person who posts a comment which really is a question, sees the answer among the additional comments. I hope that the ones who need a careful answer do give you an email address.
These Lifts are very inspiring as are the comments from around the world.
I am so grateful that the CS movement is opening communication links using much of the Internet. Thanks.

63. Kristen says:

When I surfed in So. CA many years ago, it was necessary to practice, practice, practice until it became second nature. But, the lessons you remind me of are these: 1) you must stroke hard and strong (prayer) against the oncoming waves, as you go out to the calm swells 2) you must wait patiently (trust) on your board for that perfect wave which you will see and feel supporting you 3) you must then stroke quick and fast (obedience) to catch that strong wave (the Christ) which will carry you effortlessly into shore (healing).
As Mary Baker Eddy says in Prose Works, Message for 1900: “The song of Christian Science is, ‘Work – work – work – watch and pray.”p.2:7-8

64. LittleChild says:

I love how the Daily Lifts are presenting the world with a raft of new parables applicable to present-day deeds and needs. Jesus’ parables resonated with his listeners 2,000 years ago, so it only makes sense that we develop our own easy-to-grasp-and-identify-with metaphors in order to impart the Christ message today.

Listening to “Surf’s up,” I can feel the salt spray and hear the lapping waves, images that make riding my mental surfboard, which you call spiritual sense, sound downright inviting, refreshing, clarifying, purifying, healing.

Bless you all (above) for your inspiring comments on Mary Rose’s invigorating Lift, and special thanks to #13 (each wave brings something new to shore), to #21 (“the Ninth Wave” is the one to wait for) and to those who responded so helpfully to #37, who must be having THE best, most “tubular” day of surfing (thanks #54 for that cool idea)! :-)

65. CW of Dana Point says:

Great analogy and we live near the beach! Easy to visualize! :)

66. Sandy B from FL says:

This is truly an angel thought, Mary Alice, and so easy to relate to, even for us non-surfers – thank you!

67. Kaspara says:

Mary Alice,

Thank you very much for this beautiful metaphor about spiritual life and listening for God’s messages and direction which help us meet any challenges we come upon and help us hear and understand the divine thoughts which lead us to wonderful healings.

68. Jennifer says:

Thanks for the lift.
It is so much fun to be carried to shore on a wave(I have used a boogie board.)
#52’s comment reminded me of a Bible verse from Isaiah 6:8. “…Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.”
God, use me for Your purpose.
I am in the middle of watering our yard. I just went outside to change the hose. Two ideas came to me as I was going. One was to sweep the front porch. I swept in front of the door. But, the idea persisted to sweep the whole porch. I really didn’t want to, but did it anyway and it looks better.
Another idea that came to me is the Bible story of Martha and Mary(from Luke 10:40-42). Perhaps that is the challenge regarding prayer–when to act.
The founder of Christian Science refers to the “human footsteps” as “indispensable.” (S&H, p. 254:1) This lift helped me to understand that true prayer brings action. Thank you. Have a good weekend everyone.

69. Mary Alice says:

Thank you all for your great comments. And thanks to everyone who responded to #37 Anonymous. Practical human footsteps are definitely in keeping with the practice of Christian Science. The key is letting the Christ wave carry your thoughts and actions. I love working with these verses from Proverbs: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Prov 3:5-6) A wonderful thing about how God communicates with us is that answers come in a way that we can understand, right now, this moment. And God’s ideas always bless the human experience, in tangible, practical ways.

70. Anne says:

Nice analogy, Mary Ann! Nice imagery. Thanks for the inspiration.

71. Anne says:

Oops– I mean Mary Alice! Mary Ann is a dear relative’s name.

72. Margaret, Sunshine Coast, Australia says:

This is a great Lift, Mary Alice, and thank you. How effortlessly the Precious Christ carries us over every claim of turbulence. As a youngster before the evolution of surf boards and boogie boards on our beaches, we learned to body surf with some skill. It meant we had to stay out there waiting for the big one to come and carry us right up onto the dry sand. If we got caught by a dumper we came up with our swim suit full of sand. They were woollen suits back then. Enough said. . . What joy to find a dolphin or porpoise – God’s messenger – swimming in the breakers beside us – keeping us safe from sharks. Practising Christ healing demands patience and skill too, but thehealing is always joyful, victorious and triumphant!

73. Leah says:

Great anology! Thank you for this wonderful lift!

74. Tracy C-K says:

Am away from home and heard this Lift early, early Friday morning, but absolutely loved checking in today (Sat) and reading all these amazing comments. Wow – it lifted me way up and calmed me regarding the travels ahead, as well as life desisions coming up. Gosh, thanks Mary Alice for this inspiring metaphor and everyone for sharing their insights and stories. Really loved 60. kalani’s story, but also many, many others. Just terrific. Yes, 64. LittleChild, these Lifts are often modern parables to help us truly understand spiritual things right where we are, whether a seeker new to Christian Science or totally refreshing those of us who have been studying Science all our lives. Many thanks to all.

75. Deanna says:

MaryAlice,

Thank you! What wonderful visual reminder — Surf’s Up has a new sweet meaning for me.

76. Charli says:

Delightful! Thanks!

77. Jim from So Cal says:

Thank you Mary Alice. Every need met- listening for the solution not getting caught in the whirlpool of the problem.

78. Mary from Frederick says:

Thanks for the inspiration, Mary Alice.
