I am rather puzzled that anyone could think those two passages could contradict each other! I guess people could go on arguing forever about words – after all they do it with the Bible! As you know, students of Christian Science are free to make their own decisions.

Sorry, in my attempt to present this question objectively it appears I went too far. Linking to the actual context of the question would probably not be considered appropriate. Thank you for providing the citations for context.
The person who presented the argument for Christian Scientists using "alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium" emphasized, "The depraved appetite" and commented, "What part of that is hard to understand.... MBE is not identifying the use of these, she's is attacking 'the depraved appetite' for them...".
Yes, I know that students of Christian Science are free to make their own decisions. This particular student of Christian Science, however, seems to suggest that Mrs. Eddy did not stand against all "alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium", only a "depraved appetite" for them.
In all my years in Christian Science, I never heard anyone try to make a case that Mrs. Eddy taught there was any level of appropriate use for these substances.
