Sheila Mary Cook—England

Member of The Mother Church

I was first introduced to Christian Science 40 years ago when I married my husband, a Christian Scientist. I’d been raised in another faith, and was a medical nurse until I retired six years ago.

Christian Science hadn’t interested me much until my husband passed away suddenly about a year and a half ago. I felt lonely, full of fear and grief. In an effort to try some new things on my own, I joined several community organizations, but wasn’t feeling a deep level of connection. Then I thought about how much Christian Science had meant to my husband over the years. It came to me to find a local Church of Christ, Scientist, and learn how to pray. I began to attend Wednesday testimony meetings, and was made very welcome by the members. I felt completely surrounded by love. Soon I began to regularly attend both Wednesday and Sunday services.

As my interest in Christian Science grew, I decided to apply for Primary class instruction, and went through this 12-day course last October. I felt that this was just what I’d been looking for. Studying Christian Science was helping me handle fear and was bringing joy back to my life. When the teacher suggested to our class that we take the next step and apply for membership in The Mother Church, it felt right for me to fill out an application. I’d visited Boston and attended The Mother Church years before, and had been really moved by the church service.

Today, I’m a member of The Mother Church. And I love to talk to family and friends about Christian Science when they call me for help. I’ve had lots of proofs of God’s care for me and my family, and don’t feel afraid anymore. I’ve learned to listen for God’s thoughts in my consciousness whenever I’m challenged by negativity, fear, or worry. Now, I deal with any problem that arises through prayer. Taking a more active role in my local branch church, working in the Reading Room, and ushering, have also helped me strengthen my relationship to God.
