Bemis Akelo Ambugo

Suna Migori, Kenya — When I was little, my mother described God’s care for all His children this way: Like a mother hen brooding over her chicks, she told me, God loves and watches out for each one of us. No one is ever left out. No matter how many chicks there are, the mother hen makes sure they all fit safely under her wings. God cares for each of us in the same way.

These lessons, and others I’ve learned about God from attending a Christian Science Sunday School, have been especially helpful because I’ve spent most of my life at boarding schools. These schools have provided me with better opportunities for learning than I could have gotten at home—though it hasn’t always been easy to be away from my family. And my country.

Because of Christian Science, though, I’ve been able to get through the hard times—and to flourish. This hymn from the Christian Science Hymnal reminds me that wherever I go, I’m always included in God’s care:

Pilgrim on earth, home and heaven are within thee,

Heir of the ages and child of the day.

Cared for, watched over, beloved and protected,

Walk thou with courage each step of the way.”
