Two quick healings

In the winter of 2008, I noticed that a mole on my shoulder had begun to enlarge. I’d heard over the years from both friends and various media sources that such a change could be potentially dangerous, and, if not attended to by a physician, could develop into some kind of disease.

This concerned me at first, but I quickly put into practice what I call my “one-two punch.” In my practice of Christian Science, I specifically deny whatever discord—or error—is confronting me on the basis that only good can come from God. Then I affirm the specific spiritual ideas that establish what is real and true about me. Science and Health clearly sets out this method of healing: “To heal by argument, find the type of the ailment, get its name, and array your mental plea against the physical. Argue at first mentally, not audibly, that the patient [me, in this case] has no disease, and conform the argument so as to destroy the evidence of disease. Mentally insist that harmony is the fact, and that sickness is a temporal dream. Realize the presence of health and the fact of harmonious being, until the body corresponds with the normal conditions of health and harmony” (Science and Health, p. 412).

Sometimes, I’ve found that denial of the error in itself scores a knockout of the problem. It really wakes one up to seeing past what appears to be such solid evidence of inharmony.

In this particular case, I began by denying that I could entertain any false knowledge of myself. I refused to accept the image of a body capable of displaying anything other than what I know God created. This brought such a clear assurance of my spiritual purity as God’s image that I felt I could basically conclude my prayer and leave the situation with Him. After about a week, I was taking a shower, and the mole simply disintegrated without leaving a trace.

On another occasion, I was having some chronic lower back problems. Since I wasn’t making much progress healing the situation on my own, I called a friend who is a Christian Science practitioner. We talked for about 30 minutes, and he agreed to pray with me. After our conversation, I thought of a conflict that had arisen with a family member and realized that I needed to pray for harmony in all areas of my life.

The next morning I got up and sat on the edge of the bed. I felt something in my lower back move, as if a bone had shifted. That was the end of the back pain. I was also able to resolve the issue with my relative. The friction evaporated, and we quickly resumed our normal loving relationship.

What I’ve learned in relying on Christian Science to provide for my healthcare is that nothing is impossible to God. And not only are we healed, but there’s also an uplifting of thought, or awakening, that accompanies each healing experience. I’m so grateful for Christian Science and all of the practitioners who are ready to help with any challenge.
