Quick healing after a fall
I’m grateful for many healings through my life as a result of prayer. Several occurred after I received help from a Christian Science practitioner. For example, once I had a rash on my arm that became quite serious, spreading and causing my hand to swell. I called the practitioner on a Friday. I recall her reminding me that the rash didn’t represent my true, God-given state of health or being. I think her work exemplified this sentence from Science and Health: “Tell the sick that they can meet disease fearlessly, if they only realize that divine Love gives them all power over every physical action or condition” (Science and Health, p. 420). By Sunday the rash was completely gone. That was 20 years ago, and it never returned.
The following experience was particularly special to me because it was one of the healings I was able to accomplish by praying on my own. Seeing that my prayers were effective showed me that each of us can rely on divine Love for healing.
One day several years ago, I came out of a store and, not realizing the step was diagonal, fell full-length on the sidewalk. I was able to get myself up, although I’d twisted my foot. Because I’d grown up with Christian Science and was used to turning to God for healing, I never even thought of going to a doctor to have my foot examined. Although my foot was painful, I began praying right away, remembering something I’d learned from Science and Health: “Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God’s unerring direction and thus bring out harmony” (Science and Health, p. 424).
However, by the time I got home, I could hardly walk on the injured foot. I decided to rest on the bed while I continued praying. Then I remembered a healing that I’d heard at a Christian Science lecture, involving a man who’d had a ski accident. He thought he might have torn the ligaments in his leg—the pain was so severe—but right there on the slopes he prayed with the idea that he could not be separated from God. He was immediately healed and continued skiing without any pain.
I thought that same truth would apply to me. I wasn’t wrenched away from God—I couldn’t be, because I was His spiritual expression, untouched by accident. I continued to reason along that line. The important point to me was realizing that because we are spiritual, no one can ever be separated from God or His harmony and goodness. It was comforting to know we can always depend on God’s constant care.
Then it was time to get dinner. I didn’t know how I was going to do this on one foot, but I felt I should try. And when I stood up, there was simply no pain, no swelling, no injury at all. I could walk freely. The immediacy of this freedom actually surprised me at first, but I delighted in experiencing such a lovely, clear-cut Christian Science healing. The healing was complete and remained so.
I am so grateful that through understanding Christian Science we can confidently turn to God to meet our different needs.

Do you have to stop/avoid other kinds of treatments for Christian Science to work?

Lyn—
As I understand it, a Christian Scientist generally won’t provide specific Christian Science treatment for someone under medical care. The reason is simple: while healing is the expected result from either method, the methods start from completely different premises, and one would work against the effectiveness of the other. Medical treatment relies on the power of matter, while Christian Science treatment is based on Spirit, God, being the only power, leaving no power to matter.
But this doesn’t mean a Christian Scientist or anyone else can’t pray for someone under medical care. Far from it! And this prayer can have very definite effects. For more on this, you might want to look at the Prayer for dear ones who aren’t CS thread in the discussion forums on this site.
