Healing Stories

Healed of tonsillitis symptoms

It was Christmas Eve morning. I was staying with relatives in England, having moved from Australia a few months earlier. And here I was with the symptoms of a bad case of tonsillitis. It had been a frequent complaint during my childhood and teen years, before I began to study Christian Science.

Knowing how ill I used to become during these bouts, I was concerned that I was going to spoil Christmas for everyone. Although I was new to Christian Science, I wanted to rely on prayer for healing. So when one of my relatives, who was training to be a medical nurse, offered a remedy, I politely refused.

We were so busy with various holiday activities, though, that I didn’t take time to really pray about the situation for the rest of the day, almost hoping that if I ignored it, it would go away. Instead it got progressively worse—and by the time I went to bed that evening, I was feeling very sorry for myself. To add to my discomfort, there was a loud party going on next door, which, combined with the illness, made sleeping impossible.

Finally, I did turn to prayer. The first thing that came to mind was something I’d been praying about for some time—how to better understand my spiritual completeness, particularly as it related to finding my right place and purpose in life. I thought of what I’d been learning—that God and His creation are spiritual and perfect, and that the material world, including sin, pain, disaster, and disease, was a false mental concept, a mistaken view of reality.

I don’t recall any specific passages from the Bible or Science and Health that might have come to me at the time, but I do remember that I became completely absorbed by a sense of God’s allness, and the purely spiritual nature of all that He had created, including me. I glimpsed that nothing really existed outside of Spirit. I was so engrossed in this line of thought that I no longer heard the noise coming from the party next door, nor was I aware of the illness. My thoughts were filled with the certain sense of the ever-presence and all power of God.

Suddenly, I noticed all of the symptoms just disappearing. My nose and throat cleared up, and I was completely well. I was awed by this, but while I pondered what had just happened, I fell asleep—despite the party, which was still in full swing next door.

When I awoke early in the morning, I bounced out of bed, feeling as fresh as if I’d had a full night’s sleep, and I went on to have a wonderful day. I always say that this healing was the best Christmas present I’ve ever had. It was a landmark experience in my budding understanding of the purely mental nature of matter. That was over 35 years ago, and I’ve never had any symptoms of tonsillitis since that day.
