An end to migraines

For many years I suffered from intense migraine headaches, until, through Christian Science prayer, I was permanently healed.

This condition, which began in my early teens, often sent me to bed. I would hardly be able to keep my head up or hold any food down. Any kind of stress or anxiety—such as taking an exam or giving a report, and later, work issues or making difficult decisions—would trigger an attack. Even though as an adult I was studying Christian Science, and knew that a healing could take place, I guess I just accepted migraines as something I had to live with.

I’d experienced many wonderful healings through Christian Science prayer alone, including the harmonious natural birth of my daughter. The doctor’s prognosis had been that it would be impossible for me to conceive, and that even if I did, a natural birth would be out of the question.

One day while having lunch with a friend who is also a Christian Science practitioner, I was showing distress with a headache. She said, “Because God is Love, you were not made to suffer.”

Later that day I thought of this sentence from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health, p. 391). I could see that I had not been rising “in rebellion against” these undeserved attacks. I’d been submitting to them. With renewed hope, I was ready to challenge them in prayer. I now suddenly knew without the slightest hesitation, that no matter how severe, this difficulty could be mastered with prayer.

With the help of a practitioner—and much dedicated prayer on my part—healing came in about two weeks. I remember that as I became more and more aware that in truth I was spiritual, the reflection and expression of God, my fear began to lessen. As I leaned on God’s love, a new strength of conviction welled up within me. I knew that despite the many demands made upon me, they couldn’t result in a painful reaction.

Theses verses from the book of Psalms were illuminated for me: “There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” (Ps. 91:10, 11). I listened more for the angel messages (thoughts from God) than to all the fears about how I was going to handle one problem or another. And the more I felt God’s presence, the more the weight of the burdens lifted. Despite my full freedom from migraines, the greatest lesson I learned was that it is never too late to wake up and stop submitting to whatever isn’t good.

This healing took place in the 1970s, and I haven’t had a headache of any kind since.

These words from Science and Health fill me with delight: “Citizens of the world, accept the ‘glorious liberty of the children of God,’ and be free! This is your divine right,” for I have proved them to be true (Science and Health, p. 227).

Thanks Dorothy. One thought always comforts me when faced with a problem - that we can never fall out of Love’s care because God, Love, is infinite.
