Divine law: uniquely potent
Geoffrey Barratt | from The Christian Science Journal
Law! The very word implies the power of divine Science. Christian Science is spiritual law made practical. It embodies the concept of divine strength, the irresistible. Endless authority backs up spiritual law. It is uniquely potent. As Mrs. Eddy affirmed, “God’s law is in three words, ‘I am All;’ and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law” (No and Yes, p. 30). That is an extremely substantial and succinct statement about law—about its capabilities, what it is, and what it does.
Eternal law transcends any opposition from matter.
Eternal law transcends any opposition from matter, whether that opposition claims to come from physical law, ecclesiastical law, medical law, mortal law, economic law, or any other kind of law. And we can always carry that conviction of the omnipotent law of good—all good—with us.
As a long-time Christian Science practitioner, I know well the many kinds of troubles that confront people. Inflexible budgets, poor health, business challenges, group discords—even upsets at church. However, we can always ask ourselves, Is such a thing permitted under spiritual law—under the law of Love? If the answer is No then we’ve taken a long step toward healing and adjustment.
No matter what the challenge, no matter what shape it takes, the scientific Truth that we know with all our heart is the only law about the condition—the law of cancellation to whatever is not right. We’re not just dabbling with human belief or religious theory, with fingers crossed, hoping for the best. Rather, we’re applying immutable law. Science and Health states, “Sickness, sin, and death are not concomitants of Life or Truth. No law supports them” (p. 196).
Law and love are inseparable.
Law and love are inseparable. Love and Principle—both synonyms for God—are one. Actually, there’s never been any callous or unjust or partial law. Nor temporal or loveless or uncaring law. In order for all law to be true, law must be eternal and self-defending—it must be benevolent. What blesses one, blesses everyone universally. That’s not merely a sentimental point of view. It’s backed up by divine and impersonal authority—by God. It’s an aspect of omnipresence.
What about our periodic resistance to divine law? Our reluctance to obey?
That’s our self-will. It’s mortal arrogance and mortal consciousness in action! But authentic spiritual law is irresistible, forever. In absolute reality, it has never been doubted or rejected, never could be. Because in truth, there is no mortal mind to question God’s law or to dismiss it or to doubt it, because the divine consciousness is All!
Put yourself under the law of unchanging Love.
What about our daily prayer? Isn’t it a case of consciously putting ourselves under divine law and keeping ourselves there as consistently as we can? No safer place to be, no more prospering place to be. Put yourself under the law of infinite abundance, the law of unchanging Love. Stay as conscious as you can of what is governing you and everyone moment to moment. And keep in thought the other side of the coin—we are not controlled by matter or limitation, restriction or injustice or partiality. Because, in reality, we are each under the laws of Principle—the governance of Love.
That’s an important investment of time. Because as we start to get on with our day, we seem to be surrounded by negatives and illusions—by physicality, by shortage, and conflict—in fact, by all the arguments that oppose the truth of divine Science. What to do? Be clear as consistently as you can through the day that the law of Love is ever in operation everywhere. It’s the substance of our God-bestowed experience!

I love this article. It’s so beautifully simple and inspiring. It is such a blessing to have Christian Science, even if I don’t get it all right now. Thank you.
